He even got a nomination for Dick Tracy, while I thought that his performance (and the film) weren't very good at all. But glad that he finally won an Oscar. After this, he also should've been nominated for Carlito's Way, Heat, Donnie Brasco, The Insider... Damn, he should have about 15 nominations by now.

To be fair, he was up against stellar competition. Having seen 4 of the 5 acting nominees for both 1973 (SERPICO year) and 1974 (GODFATHER 2 year) as well as both Pacino's and Nicholson's 1975 performances (which Nicholson won), it was tough. I actually think Pacino deserved to win only for SERPICO, while Nicholson should have won 2 years in a row in 1974 and 1975 among the nominees (the not-nominated Gene Hackman would've been my pick for 1974 for THE CONVERSATION).
