Al Roker Shares Update On His Prostate Cancer Surgery | TODAY

Last week Al Roker underwent surgery for prostate cancer. Now Al joins TODAY to update us on how he’s feeling and share some details of his procedure, joined by his doctor, Dr. Vincent Laudone of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. “It was this great relief” when he got the news there were no signs of the cancer afterward, Al says. Dr. Langone tells TODAY that Al has “an excellent prognosis.”

My dad had prostate cancer a couple years ago. He was able to treat it with radiation for a few months. It's gone now, and he's fine. It's a scary thing to go through, and triring depending on the treatment method, but there's a way out, and there's light on the other side. I'm glad Al is doing well.

I had robotic prostate surgery, 23 July this year, YES early detection is the key, get regular PSA tests, mine was 3.5 flatline for over 10 years, then took off last year. My recovery has been fantastic, back @ work within a week & haven’t looked back. Surgery was carried out here in Australia @ the Peter Mac Cancer Centre, this place is world class. My PSA is now undetectable.

Hi Edwardo, I should have added a bit more detail, my PSA was consistent @ 3.5 for about 10 years, then a blood test yielded a 11.8 PSA, my GP recommended seeing a Urologist, a MRI followed, then a biopsy, the biopsy presented 4 x 4mm cancers on my prostate...surgery followed. My PSA a week before surgery was 14. My 6 month check up a few weeks ago, PSA now 0.01, which has been described as undetectable.

Got same diagnosis 6 years ago, but being 75 years, and only a 4% of cancer, chose radiation. So far the PSA has dropped every year, now at .27. Glad to see your doing well.

Thank you for this video. I have a prostate biopsy on Wednesday. If mine turns out to be like Al's, I have already made up my mind to have the prostate removed, too. I am 63 yo. I have a heavy cancer history in my family. I had a PSA test, and I scored a 5.1 with a rise from 3.0 to 5.1 in just 2 years. Thank you.

The loma linda medical center in california are in my opinion the specialists with their lazer treatment for prostate cancer treatment.. the equipment is pointed at the problem and it eliminates the tradicional radiation treatment.

My brother in law has prostate cancer and he’s 57 plus on top Of that he also has Parkinson’s disease he decided to not have his prostate removed because he decided to do chemotherapy instead and apparently it has worked so far his numbers are very low thank god and I definitely recommend that all Men have there prostate checked because you never know until you do

I don't understand why Al has to be monitored for prostate cancer if his prostate has been removed.

The cancer may have already spread to other parts of the body prior to removal. Those cancer cells will continue to make psa therefore continuing to test the level of psa will be a telltale of cancer. This would likely trigger radiation therapy and/or hormone treatment. Negligble levels of psa suggest the cancer is gone.
