Tony doesn’t live far from me in Maine . He is a personal trainer at a gym we both go to . We’ve spoken on several occasions about wrestling and other subjects . The guy is still huge, even in his 60’s he warms up with more than what people do during a normal workout. Tony lives a very humble life he lives in a small apartment with his wife and drives a very old car he also works with handicapped kids . He is a very nice guy and is extremely funny he truly is.,when I first met him I was in awe of his size.

Facts. I totally understand. Funny because that's exactly what Chris Jericho wanted to do with Bill Goldberg. Build the feud up then at the paperview have a squash match where Goldberg destroys him in less than a minute or so. He knew it would've worked but Goldberg was way too caught up in his feelings taking Jericho's promos too seriously even after the fact that he explained to him that he was just staying in character.

It's probably the best lesson that new wrestlers MUST understand. They want to be "famous".... they want to be "recognized".... they want to "succeed." Which is all well and good. But success in wrestling is LONG-TERM goal..... and the success only lasts as long as the WRESTLING BUSINESS is successful.

Reminds me of a Bruce Lee story. A director on one of his films complained that Lee didn't know what he was doing. Every fight with the bad guys henchmen, Lee would take them out with one kick each and the fight would be over in a few moments. So much so that they started calling him 'One Kick Lee'. Bruce called the same people to complain about the director. 'This guy doesn't know what he's doing', Lee said. 'If it takes me 10 minutes to take out some petty goon, what am I going to do when I get to the big bad guy battle where it's actually suppose to be hard?' The producers agreed with Lee and the director was fired. Paraphrasing here of course but the idea is the same.

It was Ole's fault. There's two things will happen in wrestling matches. #1. Either the promoter tells thier wrestlers exactly what they want out of them, or #2. Don't tell your wrestlers the way you want the match to run and accept whatever the wrestlers do as a result of not telling your wrestlers exactly what you want.

I love everything Al Snow said here. Also, say what you want about Ole being a prick outside the ring (from the shoot interview clips on KZbin I can believe it) but as far as the actual business he was a smart man. Psychology is something that's sorely lacking in the business. I'm all for evolution when it comes to the actual moves in the ring but it shouldn't be at the expense of ring psychology. It's possible to evolve but still keep the old school fundamentals and I wish a lot of guys in the business would remember this regardless of what company they work for. Yeah we all know it's a work but I still want to suspend my disbelief and get emotionally invested in matches and angles.

Last I heard he was starting a fully accredited wrestling academy in Kentucky and had been approved. Not sure if it's up and running as of spring 2019, but this could be the most legitimate school for wrestling in existence. Basically you major in fitness through pro wrestling, while you also study regular classes like math, English, business, marketing, etc. and walk away with a diploma. I think an AA degree. He also owns Ohio Valley Wrestling, and has run an academy in the UK as well.

From the 8:00 mark is exactly Why Goldberg got over the way he did. He looked like a Demi-God. Sure he couldn't put on a technical masterpiece but why did he need to? Someone like him who comes surrounded by guards and walks through pyro and blows out smoke should not be having a 15 minute showcase of his moveset. It would have made no sense at all. Which is why i feel what Regal did to him was bad for the business. People see a 20 minute match of spot after spot after spot and chant "This is wrestling!" No dummies. You dont even know the story thats been told in the ring neither do you care. You're being mildly entertained for the moment by seeing an acrobatic spot-fest. You watch that same kind of match with different competitors every week and i guarentee after 2 months nobody's going to give a shit. The point of pro-wrestling is to tell a story between two characters using moves. It is NOT to tell a story of the moves between two characters. This is something that has been lost in todays product

So you’re telling people what they do or don’t enjoy? Sounds like they like what they like and it isn’t ring psychology. Just b/c you don’t enjoy it or agree w/ it doesn’t mean other people are “dummies” for liking what they like. Shit changes. It’s not the 70s anymore.

Regal did nothing to him but try to have a match. The decision to make the match longer than 2 minutes wasn’t his decision. Also for the record I don’t think the Goldberg security entrance and pyro breathing was a thing yet. Could be wrong on that, he was definitely over, but moves be damned, if you’re that over you eventually got to have a main event match that isn’t 30 seconds.

I would much rather listen to Al Snow talk about the business than Dave Meltzer. If sucks now because everyone worships Meltzer and wants a 5 star match. I have stopped watching ROH as much as a used to because none of the matches are telling a story that I care about. It's just guys taking turns doing moves and high spots. I don't know why they even have tag teams, none if there teams work a tag match. It's just 4 guys in the ring taking turns doing moves and high spots that you need more than 1 person to do.

Just an observation: In this story, wouldn't Ole, or the agent, be responsible for telling Tony and his opponent what HE wanted out of them?
@MatsThyWit

Not in the 1970s. The prevailing mentality of Booker's at that time was "it's not my job to tell you how to get over, I'm giving you the opportunity and it's up to you to figure it out. "

A lost art these days.... Al snow trying to explain wrestling Psychology to the new generation. These days wrestlers just jump around and tumble without telling a story and building something up. If you have Psychology in your matches you get a lot less injuries and draw more people. Also, your mic skills improve.

True but if you have psychology, but the rest of the matches on the card have poor or no psychology and stupid comedy spots your drawing power is limited by them other people.

@@SteelSunday If I ran a company like the one your refering to then simply put the real work on in the main event. That way thats what they remember most when they leave. Might remember a spot or two from earlier mostly a ridiculous corner flip, a moment of comedy might stand out but end with the psychology, the well worked story that invested the crowd and had them on there feet they remember the story, the bits that made you cheer or pissed off and most importantly the finish then they'll be walking out doing nothing but talking about it and excited to come next time........cos they got into it, believed even if only for the 30mins or so it was on and made them feel something, a real emotion. A flip can be explained in a second or two but everyone does flips these days, a bit cheap comedy a lil longer but really youd have to have been there. Something that took you thro a story and left an emotional impression you could take as long as the match itself to explain to someone and will stay with you because like a good film it had something that you could identify with, understand the logic of and be personally and emotionally invested in the outcome it built towards.

Different era though. Today Ole could have spun the little guy into an overnight underdog sensation and made bank.

Watching this again.. I wonder if Tony would have squashed his opponent real quick after the weight lifting event would have been the right move? Just a couple power slams then finish with a strong punch to the noggin? that one big power punch or close line or something to that effect. Instead of dragging it out for 12 mins, squash them in 2 - 3 minutes

It seems like that's more the booker's fault. If he didn't want him benching 500, then he shouldn't have told him to bench 500. Who's fucking show is it? He didn't know what was going to happen at his own show? Tony went out there and worked the crowd, got people sweating, and followed instructions. If anything, this is the perfect example of 'sometimes when you win, you still lose'.

Now I'm curious: Atlas's opponent-- did that promotion push him to the moon following that match? Because that's the only logical solution I could think of.

Sounds like he was talking about Mike Jackson. Mike Jackson got pinned on a weekly basis for years in GCW, not possible to make him a world beater in one day. If you saw the first guy Stroman squashed on RAW, that's the look Mike Jackson had. What Al describes is what it would be like if Stroman went 12 minutes with that guy, he'd be done.

its the carnival life you sell it . i learned this growing up around tony and heard this story along with him taking calls at the (flex)gym yelling at guys referring to this story telling them to get the lead out you won before you even got in the ring. want an example look at the warrior andrea giant match where warrior went in and beat the giant in nothing flat. thats what you do when you sell yourself as being superman.vince senior asked tony what he was going to do in a match against hulk hogan vince didnt let him say anything senior looked at hogan and said tony just pick the big dummy up slam him and go home tony said i know what you are saying boss the matches werent quite that quick but tony beat hulk hogan selling himself not his work up until hogan became the manipulative mastermind he is today.

Imo, this issue was something that could have totally been avoided, if management was more clear to Tony, no? Why wasn't he instructed to have a fast match to make him seem like the monster he was supposed to be against a smaller, supposedly weaker opponent? I dunno if Tony is actually the one you can blame for this, it's not HIS company or HIS decision to just go and do whatever he wants I hope - that's STUPID lol
