I was fortunate enough to see Al Stewart live in London at the end of 1978. Was already a fan but didn’t realize what a spectacular guitarist he is. Saw him with Dave Matthew’sas warm up in Preston in mid eighties. Only about 50 in the audience, so he beckoned us round and played requests and answered questions in between. He had six Ovation guitars in a semicircle around him and boy did he work them hard. After Dave’s 3/4 hour, he came on for 1.5 hrs then Dave joined him for some folk classics. After a knowledgeable question about the songs gestation he even played some of Year of the Cat with alternative Tony Hancock lyrics. It was a once in a lifetime concert

Born in 1961. I had the best of most worlds. Brought up by my parents on Beatles, Kinks, Dionne Warwick, later beach boys and a load of other great 60's music. Then heavy metal in my early teens. And followed by punk at 16 then New wave and indie music by 20. Awesome stuff and hundreds of gigs watched. My music tastes are very broad as a result. Al Stewart was great. This performance video does not do that magnificent song any justice. It should have been done w/beautiful visuals of Spain, a wild seashore, a cobblestone street, and an ever present full moon ducking in and out of the clouds. Sure, it's great to see the band playing, but it's kind of a limp presentation. Al Stewart's masterpiece, and there are many of them, deserved better.

The fishing boats go out across the evening water Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border The wind whips up the waves so loud The ghost moon sails among the clouds Turns the rifles into silver on the border On my wall the colours of the maps are running From Africa the winds they talk of changes coming The torches flare up in the night The hand that sets the farms alight Has spread the word to those who're waiting on the border In the village where I grew up Nothing seems the same Still you never see the change from day to day And no-one notices the customs slip away Late last night the rain was knocking at my window I moved across the darkened room and in the lampglow I thought I saw down in the street The spirit of the century Telling us that we're all standing on the border In the islands where I grew up Nothing seems the same It's just the patterns that remain An empty shell But there's a strangeness in the air you feel too well The fishing boats go out across the evening water Smuggling guns and arms across the Spanish border The wind whips up the waves so loud The ghost moon sails among the clouds Turns the rifles into silver on the border On the border On the border On the border
