Indy car has not been the same since the Unsers, Foyts, Snevas, Rutherfords and Mears of the world left the track. Love how candid of a story teller Al jr. is … an Unser tradition for sure. The flip off that never was is also a testament to his dads parenting. I consider that race to be the second most exciting finish next to Mears and Johncocks 1982 finish. More importantly, great to hear Little Al is on a positive path with Christ guiding his life after all the struggles. God bless.

Watching live on TV, felt like I was there with Little Al, gonna flip Emmo off, then the realization that this guy just gritted his teeth and applauded and thumbs-up ed him ,even if sarcastic was mind-blowing. A better decision. Love the Unsers, and not at the expense of any other racing family. Big Al, the Screaming Eagle uncle Bobby...... (and right now I'm going to look up your uncle Jerry, I remember young Little Al talking about him.) The victory in the 'Galmer' ("we just figured we'd get best in class") my favorite moment in American motorsports. And a press conference when Al Jr said We're hoping for an all-Marlboro front row. Moment of Clarity, I get it Al, you might have been known as the double bird guy!!

Little Al was and still is one of my favorite Indy Car drivers even given his indiscretions. His record shows that he is one of the best that ever raced the series!

He was super nice and giving with his time every time I have met him. We all have some skeletons for sure. Must be harder when you are under the public eye all the time though!

I always thought the thumbs up was a bit of a sarcasm. And maybe a little bit of how great they were racing and for the show for fans. Never thought he would congratulate Emmo.

that is what I felt from him as well. He made a good choice when he hit the fork in the road and chose the thumb for sure. I mean heck, we are still talking about it all these years later!!!

I am happy JR. won twice at Indy. He made a huge mistake on the back stretch coming up on a slower car. He slightly lifts allowing Emmo to pull side by side. JR. actually darts down to get side by side causing a small accoding effect as Emmo's line is interrupted. A risky move but Emmo is a pro. At this point we clearly see Jr's car is better as they stay side by side even after the lift. What Jr should have done is let Emmo go- remember they're coming to the white lap. If he stays within a few car lengths he gets him on turn 1. However, they go side by side into 3 and the inside man can lean on 4 extra wheels and a prayer that was answered. Awesome finish all around. Champions all.

@@DannWilliamsCoach let Mario talk about how in 87 he didn't waste the Chevy engine. He was wasn't pushing his equipment as many to this day wrongfully believe. Love Mario. Simply one of the greatest racers ever.
