Alabama Shakes just speaks to me so much because of the huge crossover to the blues within the song. Most modern (for lack of a better word) hipster music/indie/alternate rock or whatever sounds very heavy on the strings part, but this is definitely more focused on rhythmic percussion/keyboard sounds in the beautiful mesh of foreground/background.

I found this song at a children's dance competition. I was passing by one of the stages when this song started playing. It immediately stopped me in my tracks and I looked over to the stage. A little girl began dancing to it and the whole scene mesmerized me. I was frozen in the music until I remembered I was actually working the event outside and needed to get back to my post. The sound faded as I walked away but this song grabbed my ❤️ and will be with me forever.

When I first listened to this, I felt so excited that I had found such an uplifting and soulful piece of music, but after about the 6th listen, it only fills me with dread and melancholy, the loneliness in this song is subtle, but overwhelmingly potent. Few songs have made me feel this corrosive brew of both despair and joy. That unlikely and almost contradictory feeling is something I've searched for a word that accurately describes the feeling, and the best I could come up with is the Portuguese word "Saudade", which is similar to "nostalgia", the joy of a memory, combined with the sadness of loss. It doesn't quite fit what I'm looking for though, what I'm talking about is a feeling, a raw emotion, we have these for feelings such as happiness, and sadness, but as far as I'm aware, not one for both.

The sounds towards the end always get to me. When the astronaut is slowly realizing that everything he knows and loves is gone- it has a certain sound, with the string instruments, very dissonant and eerie and then turns harmonious, consonant and hopeful when the astronaut looks up and sees the light. Could it be that he isn't willing to give up and may try to find life on the planet he's approaching or do others see this "light at the end of the tunnel" as acceptance and is allowing himself to see the beauty in this tragedy? I'd love to read everyone's response to this. I'm curious of how everyone perceives the ending. Also, this video is WAY too short and needs to become a short movie. :3
@liamdallimore8076 жыл бұрын
I'd go with the second one.
@jeremiahtayler78685 жыл бұрын
I always thought it seemed more tragic to me, but I totally agree with you - the dissonant chords at the end, the way the refrain is built up, peppering all those thoughts, love, touch, sight, memories and everything, against the bleak and clinical backdrop of space and his ship; the two work so well together (just like sound and colour!), but today, I came back and watched the video again, and I saw that final eclipse as a chance for him to try again at life and love and everything, which usually, I saw as just a premonition of his total state of isolation. Interesting.
@Ackelope5 жыл бұрын
I also love the bit around about 1:56; after he's woken up and had some "food" and been reminded of his memories, he feels a sort of uncertainty about where exactly he is, what's happened to wake him up, and what he can do to escape this situation to return to those memories, or if he can at all. I think there's also a bit of questioning relating to why exactly he is there, and there's some level of self-reassuring going on and a bit of resolution to continue/complete the mission or "job" that he's partaking in (though that resolution melts away quite quickly once he realizes what's happened), and the chord change at that point reflects that uncertainty and inner conflict perfectly.
@joshchapman47534 жыл бұрын
His food supply has eroded. He’s just found out his loved ones are LONG gone, in the distant past. He glimpses the beauty of what he spent all these years searching for, what he sacrificed his entire life for, and is in a moment of beautiful revelation, and suddenly he realises that he will soon die and be with the ones he left behind and has come to a moment of ecstatic transcendence and surrender.
@bruno.dominguez13034 жыл бұрын
This video reminds me of life: someday you wake up and don't know what is going on, how u got to that place. Searching things that should explain what happened, you discover that everything you know was destroyed, and from now on you will have to deal with it, being (or not) your fault. Sometimes I wake up just like the guy. What I did to get here? I don't know, life passes so fast, and it doesn't matter anymore cause there is no time machine in this world. We all have to keep going forward to the light, there is no other option.

“You never know true beauty until you see Earth from space, or true terror until you hear someone knocking on the space station door from outside. You look through the porthole and see an astronaut, but all your crew is inside and accounted for. You use the comm to ask who it is and he says he’s Ramirez returning from a repair mission, but Ramirez is sitting right next to you in the command module and he’s just as confused as you are. When you tell the guy this over the radio he starts banging on the door louder and harder, begging you to let him in, saying he’s the real Ramirez. Meanwhile, the Ramirez inside with you is pleading to keep the airlock shut. It really puts life on Earth into perspective.”

Then people kept saying how great it was, so I decided to stick with it till the finale... and... IT BLEW MY MIND! Season 2 was WAAAAYYY better than season 1, and it blew my mind with every episode. There are literally so many layers in this song its incredible. Im listening to it for a class assignment where we pick any song we like and dissect it but oh wow, get some good headphones and try to identify each instrument and see how the entire arrangement shifts half way through

I think this video simply symbolizes the power of time. You must enjoy the present moment as much as you can. He took time for granite and now everything is just a memory. Also symbolizing how unconnected we are as humans. All these distractions like social media, technology, etc. (notice the futuristic technology in the video) are making us surrender communication with each other and being one. These two symbols tying in with each other create this video.

I remember hearing this song on a commercial on TV back in my middle school- high school days, and years back, I would forget who written and SUNG this masterpiece, my sister had played this song, on a car ride last mid-September of last month and I seen the name, Alabama Shakes, then I forgot it, again. Earlier today, I walking around, and The instrumental was playing in my head over and over, and I told myself “I need to go listen to this song.” or even “I need to add this song to my playlist.” They don’t make songs like this, beautiful sound, mystique, truthful but leaves the listener to find the answer to the sound of art. The music video and the music speaks for itself! MASTERPIECE! 10/10

So no one’s gonna talk about the incredible progression and key change towards the ladder half of the song from 1:44 and onwards? The composition is so beautifully dark with undertones of uncertainty an despair - which eventually evolves into the relieving key of F# making the listener feel relief and hope.
@matthewgumabon74986 жыл бұрын
When I first heard this song and really focused on the lyrics and the mood it gives off, I did imagine it could tell the tale of an interstellar explorer, alone and adrift on a ship light years away from another human being on some grand mission. The song really does capture that feeling of being on the fringe of insanity and being desperate to not be lonely anymore, but instead the only stimuli around are the monotonous “sounds” of the computer equipment and the glaring “colors” of indicators and monitors. Then I saw that Alabama Shakes made this music video and it was pretty much exactly what I imagined! Beautiful song and beautiful imagery, I love these guys!

One day you wake up and things don't feel quite right. The world feels slow, things seem quieter, and some faces are now unrecognizable. You start questioning what changed? What happened? You look around see those crowds of people? They are smiling and talking about what you wonder, what makes you different than them? Why can't you be like them, why can't you be happy? No one can answer your questions so you look at yourself. You realise nothing ever changed, you just woke up and open your eyes. But now you realise you've been focusing so much on everyone else that you failed to notice that you were alone. And you always will be, but that's ok. Because i will be with you we can just be lonely together. After all that's what we always do right brother?

@@maxweir6785 in the weirdest twist of fate I can imagine, I ended up here again. On the cusp of a massive life change. My girlfriend and I of 6 years just broke up. It's been a gruelling year, and then we decided to part ways. Now, alone in Berlin but with many friends, a new chapter begins - as big of a chapter as the one that brought me here. And as I near the end of the chapter, this song comes to me -melancholy hopeful, sadness, happiness, blended in such a way that it soothes, encourages, but also reminds me of pain. I can't explain it, but maybe that's the whole point of music. I remember writing the initial comment, and now i'm here again. Life is just fucking crazy isn't it? In a weird way this video makes more sense to me now. I had an initial trajectory, but now after things ended I realize i'm far away from where I had planned to be. But strangely there is hope, and maybe this journey's trajectory brought me closer to where I wanted to be in the end. I'm not sure if the planet shown has an atmosphere, if it's an alien planet but i'd like to think so
