I think that the biggest introduction of the NGSW program is the XM157 Optic. Having an integrated ballistics computer that adjusts the reticle is incredible. And it can have the IR Designator within, which combined with the new night vision, means that you don't even really need an IR designator.

The optic is really the only thing I’m interested in about this weapon system. I’ve got $5k saved for when it hits the civilian market. This rifle hasn’t done anything that a 143gr AP .308 bullet out of a POF Rouge couldn’t do for less money

I would have liked to see the RM277, but that's just the bullpup fan in me, and I liked the idea of polymer ammo (especially in MG's).

@@wipplewopple1876 I’m not interested in re-inventing old technology. Caseless ammo is the future. Rather spend money on revisiting vehicle mounted electromagnetic rail weapon concept. With the leaps we’ve had in battery technology, I think we could get a handheld model by 2040. If soldiers could just melt metals down into bullets and then fire them out of rifles, then there will be no need to spend so much money sourcing ammunition and shipping it to FOBs. We’ll just ship bud light overseas. Drink the beer, melt the cans down and you’re good to go.

6.8SPC , 6mm ARC and 6.5 Grendel all have enough performance advantages over 5.56, plus they come in an AR15 size platform that would save weight over the AR10 and the SIG Spear size rifles. SIG MCX Spear LT would be a great platform in either 3 of these calibers and would be an excellent choice for the military, and a 13" inch barrel would still give you excellent performance out of those cartridges.

I’ve been saying this all along! Slap a 6.5G, 6.8SPC or the new favor dejour 6 ARC and you get an AR-15 on steroids, V’s AR-10 size and weight. Heck, I’m cutting my 6.5G down to 13.9 and looking for a 6 ARC in 13.9, so as if 5.56 fades away I’ll have a heavier hitter and still be able to hunt with any of them. I already prefer to hunt with my Grendel over my .308 as it is!

Yeah, im guessing since the start of the heroic ukrainian defense, the army is second guessing the armor defeating capabilities of 6.8. maybe they will ask or side contract for lighter barrels in 6.5? I mean no other country has widespread regulated standard issue body armor, so maybe magpul and a bunch of other companies can fill in the gap?

Exactly. I’d say the 6.8 SPC is the best out of the bunch. Put it in the LWRCI (also fully ambi) which is ready made for it and has a bigger magazine well to fit the larger magazine engineered for the cartridge. The government just loves to waste our money. They spent a billion dollars making a high pressure short barreled AR10. Woooo, amazing. Short framed 16" AR10's already weigh less than 8 pounds. This NGSW won't replace the M4, it's just an expensive, albeit a good, designated marksman rifle. Polymer cases would have more benefits than the high-pressure steel cases, even if it requires more barrel length. They're just too greedy on the unobtanium requirements. The 6mm SPC, 6.5mm Grendel, .300 Blackout, .224 Valkyrie, and 6mm ARC are just too greedy trying to give the AR15 some sort of hunting or varmint or self-defense application when you can have a 6mm Creedmoor or a 6.5mm Creedmoor AR10 that weighs 7 pounds. 5.56 only needs to be updated with 90 grain slimmer higher BC pills, something like 5.7mm from the 5.56 parent case, and juice the pressure, but keep the M4. Less tungsten is needed per armor piercing round. Direct Impingement carbines cost less to produce, are lighter in weight, potentially more accurate, and are more reliable than either short stroke or long stroke gas operation. Why would civilians want a 6mm ARC when 6.5 Grendel is cheaper? Why would civilians want 6mm ARC when they can have a 6mm Creedmoor for the same size and weight? The 5.56 just needs a few more grains and the ability to have a higher ballistic coefficient shape for the bullet, and there's no reason they couldn't milk another 10,000 PSI out of it. The 5.56 needs to essentially stay the same, but become the best version of itself, all changes have been way overboard. Anything belt fed needs to be using polymer cased ammunition. The Army wants a sniper rifle the size of an MP5 and they're dumb.

if you can done accurate and effective shot on enemy, you don't need using more round for suppresing fire, with the xm157 sight, everyone was marksman or sniper, i think the most important thing in the whole ngsw program is that scope, a gun with and without a scope will make a lot of difference, especially xm157 is literally a lightweight personal fire control system

Quality content and a well balanced perspective from that Marine. However, when it comes to the XM7 and it's implementation by the Army, we are missing crucial bits of context that don't get brought up: the 1:1 comparison between the M4/M27 and the XM7 is moot. Its completely understandable that this happens, as the infantryman's rifle is a very intimate thing, however, the next big war will not be infantry-centric like it has been for the past 20+ years. Infantry, and the Infantryman's rifle is but one system in a system of systems. Another problem being glossed over is people don't understand that the fundamentals of fire and maneuver and general infantry combat are predicated on ideas established during the mid-Cold War era, mainly the 60s and Vietnam. Technology has exponentially progressed since then. This also plays into my frustration over veterans stating their opinions as Law. We are in the same scenario that Cavalrymen were during the interwar period in the 1920s and 30s: great technological advancements are driving change in ways that may seem counterintuitive to the established order. Iraq and Afghanistan are irrelevant. Its not Fallujah or Korengal Valley anymore. To that end, battle rifles, while seeming outdated, will become the norm due to the proliferation of drone technology, thermals, and other systems NATO used to have a monopoly on. As we see in Armenia, the Ukrainian Civil War, and the Russian invasion, traditional armored assaults are getting annihilated by live ISR provided by cheap drones. Air defense is also a real factor now unlike GWOT. China is investing heavily in drone technology. Infantry can no longer rely on traditional fire support platforms to deal with enemies at range and DMRs aren't going to cut it. As a branch of ground forces, they need the stand-off capabilities at the inidvidual level, and thats why the Battle Rifle is making a comeback and thats why we need the XM7, so they can engage the threats keeping the larger elements at bay.

I have to agree with several comments that the 6.5 Grendel is where it’s at! The range, lethality, versatility, control ability, and weight make it the most cost effective way to increase infantry performance! I’ve been shooting this round since 2012 and while it’s not my everyday go to war rifle, it is in my arsenal and if ammo were as ubiquitous as 5.56, I’m there!

I agree 6.5 Grendal is amazing. But they've found out it tends to jam on full Auto with M4/AR-15 platforms. If anything, if they weren't more expensive, I'd say that 6mm ARC, or 6mm MAX would be great choices as well!

First off. Very great series! I just finished with this one. By far the best, most in depth review and informative Ive seen. Props for actually used the Ammo that is being adopted with the Rifle. While I never carried an M27 in my time, or even the M4. I will agree with the Marine in your video that the 16.5 inch barrel with suppressor is ridiculous on the M27. I did some CQB/CQC (whatever the kids call it now days) with a 20" M16A2 and it is not ideal. The M27 takes us right back to that problem. And while the longer barrel gives more FPS it is still just 5.56 and I dont believe the weight and length of the M27 is a good trade for the ballistics. I do like the Gas Piston over the direct Impingement for cooler, cleaner running, and reliability. Plus the entire reason for going with the M27 was to get rid of the M249SAW. The new SIG light machine gun fixes that problem. So maybe a Marine Rifle Squad can go to a 14.5" version the M27 and adopt the SIG machine Gun ( With a DMR or 2 thrown in possibly with the NGSW) . Now we get into different ammo for the machine gunner and the rest of the squad. So maybe the NGSW is right for the Marine Corps too??? As for the NGSW XM7...I was concerned about the weight of the gun but not as much anymore. I do know that with the suppressor and the new Optic it will add significant weight to the rifle. Which will most likely put it well over the M27. Then start adding IR Lasers and lights and it might get pretty heavy.. The weight of the ammo is, like the Marine in the video said, another issue. Not sure what can be done about that. But I know they did test some polymer cased ammo but decided not to go that route. I heard its great in bolt action guns but gets stuck on Semi Auto guns quite a bit. Maybe in a few more years? All that said back in WW1 and WWII guys much smaller and not as well fed or supplied carried the M1903 Springfield, and the M1 Garand and did just fine with the weight, ammo, and the recoil of the 30-06. Overall I think its great but still think there is a place for the M4. or a shorter barrel M27. I also think it would be an amazing rifle in a DMR role. Especially with the new optic. Great video! Apparently the M157 optic has both IR and visible laser integrated into the unit, so theoretically the only additional weight over the basic setup would be a white light. That said, the figures I've seen for the suppressor are just under 1.5 pounds, and a loaded twenty round magazine at about 1.4 pounds, so the loaded rifle with suppressor comes in at just about eleven and a quarter pounds (11.24). Not sure what the optic unit weighs, but if that adds near a couple pounds, we're looking at a net weight of well over thirteen pounds. So it would definitely be heavier than a "slick" M27, but when suppressor and everything is taken into account, weight difference would only be a couple extra pounds for the XM7.

I was using the G3 (7.62X51) when I served in the Greek Army as a reserve officer in the mid 80s and I never had a problem with the recoil. At the time, we had four 20 round mags in two pouches plus one on the gun and additional mags in bandoliers. I have also fired the M1 and the BAR while in BT and these were OK if the rifle was held firmly. I don't buy the more ammo carried argument for the 5.56, because with the heavier and more stable SS109 NATO round, it has much reduced stopping power, so if one needs 2 or 3 rounds to do the job of a single heavier round, then the 20 round magazines go further than the 30 round ones. One issue that seems to become important is the noise of an 80 000 psi 6.8 round fired from a 13" barrel, should the gun is fired without the suppressor. Comparing the noise of the old M1 with a 24" barrel against the G3 with an 18" barrel, the G3 was much louder, although the 7.62 NATO ammo was smaller than the WW2 0.308 ammo. My impression is that firing an 80 000 psi 6.8 round without a suppressor from a 13" barrel, the noise will deafen everybody near the gun, if the do not have ear protection.

I believe the difference comes in the combat philosophy, in US we like fire superiority where even if we're not landing direct hits we just want them to be permanently suppressed so the other squad can flank (battle drill 1a). Of course, the ideology may change with this rifle being adopted? But I've been with a lot of guys that struggled to qualify so makes me wonder how they're going to get people nailing shots even with that fancy xm157 optic

@@nathankim9587 Partially correct. The philosophy in the Greek Army is to put aimed shots on the target in order to conserve ammunition. However each infantry squad has two SAWs, HK11s or FN MINIMIs (from which the M249 was developed) and one 40mm GL for enemy suppression. There are also two MG3s at platoon level, firing 1100 rounds per minute each. These weapons are augmented by the company's 81mm mortars and possibly by light Hirtenberger M6C-210 60mm Commando mortars that are mainly used by the SOFs. IMAO, the 6.8X51 is an overkill round, relative to the 7.62X51. For me a SIG hybrid 6.5 CREEDMOOR round was going to be a selection with lower recoil and sufficient stopping power. An other difference in philosophy in the Greek army is the training with iron sights, with targets set at 300 meters. The idea is that gadgets are nice, but if they fail, soldiers should still be able to fight effectively without them.

@@nathankim9587 Yes, the Greek Army follows closely the US, with some differences going back to the British training the reconstructed Greek Army had in the Middle East during WW2 when Greece was occupied by the Germans, Italians and Bulgarians. Also we have mandatory military service for all fit males and voluntary military service for women. As a student in the US I completed the Army ROTC program and it was identical to the Greek reserve officers school. In the US,I was trained on the M16A1, the M60, the Claymore mine and the LAW. The main difference between the two programs was that in the US I was in a university as a student, while in Greece I was 24/7 in a military camp as a soldier.

What the Marine didn't take into account is that the M157 VORTEX sight SYSTEM with its laser rangefinder and several other onboard sensors and ballistic "engine" (computer) will give him is an 80% hit percentage to 700 meters.That means fewer rounds needed unless you need a LOT for suppressive fire. And suppression is what the new M250, 6.8 x 51 machine gun is for.

You need 3000+ FPS to beat armor with some consistency. IIRC this new round is NOT doing that and it is running at HIGH PRESSURES.

@@AKlover the military load is over 3000fps. Civilians only have, surprise, the civilian load. Not like you can go to your local gun store and buy M855A1 either. The penetrator is also important, and we haven't seen that yet. I assume our military is keeping it a secret for as long as possible, because it's probably nasty.

the problem is 5.56 simply does not perform adequately out of short barrels. It was designed for a 20 inch barrel. Military barrels are basically half that length these days. 5.56 is amazing out of a 20 inch barrel. But 12 inches? no. Make no mistake, the 5.56 will stick around with the M4, but only in the role it was intended for, rear echelon troops, tankers, etc. The M4 was never intended to be a front line weapon because of its reduced firepower, but its short length made it worth it. The XM7 gives you the short length with actual firepower, which is great for our front line troops.

Anyone who tells you otherwise is feeding you marketing BS. "Resistance to Deformation" is NOT A hard concept to grasp or implement. A copper projectile will give better penetration, A bonded copper projectile (usually Molybdenum) will do even better than that. Hardened tool steel is likely used because it is far cheaper than copper at it's current price. A little constructive criticism if you are capable of taking it. You come off as A condescending wannabe know it all who plays too many video games....... Work on that. You can buy IV Chinese plates from multiple vendors it is not hard or expensive to test on them.

There isn't a weight advantage. Mags and ammo are heavier. XM7 isn't meant to replace the M27 either, but the M4A1, which is lighter than the M27. This weapon doesn't make sense for 95% of the duty positions in an Infantry Platoon or any of the sections in a Rifle Company.

I have the Sig MCX Spear in 7.62x51. I dont have any idea of how it shoots in 277 Fury. But the recoil is okay. Its not bad at all. I really dig the rifle. I paid a lot of money for it. I also have the Scar 17. The recoil impulse and muzzle rise is better from the Scar 17 despite being lighter. I let one of the RSO's at the range shoot both. He preferred the Scar because of the weight. He is a very big guy and I'm a regular in the weight room. I dont know what he thought about the recoil or muzzle rise. I forgot to ask. To be fair, the setup on my Sig Spear is quite heavy; Elcan 1.5-6X, Cloud Defensive Rein 3.0 light, Strike Industries angled grip and an airsoft laser. It is heavy for most people, especially if I add the Surefire Training Suppressor. The Scar has an Elcan 1-4X, Surefire M600 Light and a Daniel Defense vert grip. The Scar feels like a toy in comparison. Sooo light. I have an MR556 upper on a milspec AR15 lower as well. Its nowherw near as heavy as the Spear. Plus the weight of the magazines are way different. I love my Sig Spear but it is heavy as Lizzo's lunch trey.

You have to, round by round, unload and reload either into mags or belts from mags or belts to use either in the other. At least M249, theoretically, takes mags. Belt fed individual weapons are dumb, and the crossloading virtually doesn't exist.

I believe the 6,8 has its advantages in asymetical conflicts with open terrain to even outperform weapons like a pkm while still be able to clear building. However when it comes to scenarios like the ukraine war it might be not the best choice. Targets at distances over 300 yards are beeing pounded by artillery. The ability to have more rounds of 556 on you is crucial to gain fire superiority. Another factor i cant quite determine is how well it will handle dirt since artillery makes you fight in mud storms. In my oppinion the 6,8 should replace the 7,62 and not the 556 and should be more used in a role as a squad weapon.

Out of a 13” barrel a 110gr will do about 3200fps and penetrate lvl 3+ armor out to over 300yds. Watch tv show “forged in fire”. This penetrator is NOT mild steel. I heard some Rangers talking about it and they were not enthused. They said the weight was going to be an issue but the main thing was the reduced ammo load a Soldier would be able to carry, especially for the guy on the M-249 replacement. And I would have to agree with them. While I think the M7 makes for a great DMR or weapon to be put in the SOF tool kit, it's not really ideal for line units it large scale combat operations (which will involve very little room clearing). What Ukraine is showing is that volume of fire is CRITICAL, because more bullets going down range means your enemy is suppressed longer/more gooder. Can't do that with fewer bullets, no matter how awesomely fired those bullets are. This is obviously even more of an issue with the XM250, which is going to have a considerably smaller load out. However, it would be a great replacement for the M-240s. Frankly, I think they should build a machinegun and carbine that fires the 5.7mm round or something similarly small, simply because you could carry stupid amounts of ammo and use it to suppress just as effectively in a battle. And next to no recoil would make it a breeze to shoot. Not every target gets engaged at 500m and not every target has level 4 body armor. Pretty sure no one is wearing a level 4 plate over their face.

You are getting a lot of the wrong conclusions. *Yes* in the context of the Ukrainians, that holds true, but after losing a lot of their US trained officers and NCOs from prior to the invasion, they are also falling back on soviet era doctrines, and don't have all the equipment the US does. Their biggest concern is just having ammo at all not what kind, accuracy, or effective ranges. Additionally, the USMC, US Army, and British Army all came to the same conclusion after 20 years of fighting in Afghanistan when it came to suppression: accuracy trumps volume. It doesn't matter if you are putting out a lot of fire, if you aren't hitting or close enough to the target. You can even find footage from Ukraine of soldiers in trenches taking direct fire from BMPs and not really caring. Three of the most proficient and professional fighting forces in the world saying the same thing can't be wrong. Now, the big thing is how they went about addressing it. The UK took the economic approach and dropped one of their two SAWs in a rifle squad in favor of a DMR. The USMC did the same, but instead gave everyone M27s, turning everyone into an autorifleman in effect. The US Army took the most radical approach by going for Battle rifles and full power cartridges. Also your last statement is ridiculous. There is no 5.7mm rifle round unless you are referring to the pistol cartridge, which is makes your statement even worse. Yes, not every target gets engaged at 500m+ and yes, not everyone has level IV armor, but that ignores the benefits of penetration of hard cover surfaces that are better achieved than current issue 5.56. Moreover, even outside of MOUT, which can still see engagements of 300m+, the reason engagement distances are 400m or less boils down to the same traditional limitations of engagement distances by infantry, that being terrain, threat ranges, and again, lack of modern equipment. Can't effectively engage past 200-400 if you're still using iron sights and red dots. Ukrainian forces are entirely dependent on artillery for engaging targets further out, or sending in their special forces to do CQB. We've Already seen how drones are affecting engagement distances. By increasing situational awareness at the small unit level, you are able to increase the accuracy and effective range of small arms and infantry heavy weapons, as evidenced by not only drone footage of coordination with HMGs and GMGs, but by ISIS in Syria as well.

@Riorozen you can very much shoot back under suppression. There is footage of soldiers in Ukraine engaging enemies just fine under what would traditionally be considered overwhelming fire. Suppression via volume of fire was created out of an era where iron sights were the standard, and the most advanced piece of equipment was the platoon radio, and is supremely wasteful. Soldiers carry so much ammunition today because it is wasted on inaccurate fire shooting in the general direction when modern equipment has proven you can achieve the same effects or better with more precise fire as stated in my previous comment. Much like how Soldiers used to line up in rows to achieve maximum accuracy with their weapons evolving into small unit maneuvers, we are experiencing the same evolution of tactics and doctrines due to advancements in technology.

I think most people think this is a bad replacement because they are thinking in the old way of doing things. This rifle integration is also going to come with new battle doctrine and tactics. You won't need as much ammo because you would be in theory further away and able to shoot more accurately. So you probably won't need to just dump 20 rounds right away because the enemy probably won't be able to accurately put rounds on your position, allowing for you to acquire a solid sight picture.

That's a lovely theory, but infantry contact ranges are dictated by ground, not equipment. Firefights in the green zone in Helmand, for example, were happening at double or even single figure ranges due to the close country. Most of the worlds population lives in or around an urban setting, meaning operations in built up areas are likely in future conflicts. This means typical outside contact ranges of 50-150m, moving over complex terrain (including subterranean settings) and through buildings. Just look at footage from Gaza.

I am an old retired guy now, but I was 12 years infantry and 22 years military. Three different combat zones. THANK YOU!! Nobody mentions terminal ballistics! More capability than a 308. More penetration than a 308. More range than a 308. The weight difference is tiny. It is lighter than the M-16A2 was and that was not a heavy rifle. The recoil difference is not a big deal either. We trained millions of soldiers to fire the 30-06 and they handled the recoil just fine. The entire M-16 family was based around a cartridge that was meant for varmits and small game. We made it work because that's what soldiers do. A cartridge meant to kill 250 lb animals wearing body armor is an absolutely huge step in the right direction.

I mean, 6.5 grendel is great, but 6mm ARC or 6mm Creedmoor would be better options ballistically. 6.5 Creedmoor would honestly still be better for the military if you go 6.5, given it allows several components to be reused that are still operating on the old .308 logistics chain. Plus it would have less barrel wear issues, I suppose. But for whatever reason the military has been set on 6.8mm calibers since the SPC, and I still have no idea why.

That's really good for the DM, but it's too big for your average grunt and too big for the SAW if you want to carry lots of ammo. THe ability to carry a lot of ammo is critical in modern warfare. The Grendel gives you long-range and higher energy without going to a bigger caliber, bigger weapon, or bigger magazine.

The way I see it, if they really intend to equip each soldier with the Spear, I'm really afraid that this platform will end up like the M14: a heavy, cumbersome weapon, with an overly powerful ammunition, uncontrollable in burst shooting, very expensive to produce and not very effective on the battlefield. Imagine having to clear a building with such a cannon in hand; just to turn around you have to be careful not to bump into walls, doors and teammates. Handling such a beast in a confined space is really difficult, especially with a full-power cartridge. In my opinion they would have been better off rechambering the M4s in 6.5 Grendel or 6.8 SPC, it would have saved billions of dollars in expense and a lot of time.

My son weighed his HK M27 for me and fully equipped with Trijicon 1-8 SCO, PEQ2 , and Knights Armament Suppressor but without magazine or ammo it was 13.8 pounds. He is currently serving in the USMC Infantry. My old M16a1 weighed around 7 pounds in 1978. We thought that we were cool when we duct taped two mags together.

The juice isn't worth the squeeze. The M27 with suppressor is just stupid to begin with. The M5/M7 is even worse and their is zero benefit compared to a 7.62x51 or a 5.56 M4. The actual "Cmobat" ammo with 80,000 to 100,000 PSi is a gun killer and has different ballistics compared to the lower pressure "practice" ammo the military plans on buying. Need AP capability against LVL armor, use M995 or 7.62 AP and save the taxpayer billions of dollars. The sooner this committee created disaster goes away, the better. Don't even get me started on the $15,000+ "Magic Optic they want to equip this rifle with. Also, other in the sack, 3" of barrel length does make a difference in CQB, but the suppressor lengh does

Well this was a look at military rifles and the Spear will more than likely be one, the HK 416 is one, and the POF awhile a great rifle isn’t a contender. From what I understand these trials take a tremendous amount of money to participate in, they take many years to pay off if ever, ( HK is currently in financial trouble from similar military trials across the globe) and I imagine the POF just isn’t in the position to participate. Also, comparing these rifles doesn’t make a whole lotta sense to me in the first place; the m4 is the service rifle the m5 is replacing, not the m27. Yes, I get the USMC uses the m27, and it’s a Marine reviewing the m5…but, again…not the rifle the m5 is replacing. While I’m not personally familiar with the m27, every reference I’ve found shows it with a bird cage flash hider, which I am familiar with, and does a pretty decent job by itself.

They talked about it in one of their press demos. Saying without modifying the rifle, the case design can add at least 200fps I believe. This next part is all me speculating, but if 556 got this in a gun that was designed for it, I'm sure you could get 3600fps out of a 16" rifle and near 4000fps out of a 20" rifle.

Is it a good rifle? Yes. Is it a good cartridge? Also yes. Is it a good rifle for the infantry? That's a little harder to answer. A possible problem is the recoil. The reason 556 was adopted was simple... fast followup shots are king, and King Fast Followup Shot rules alone.

We know why the 5.56 M16 was adopted for the time period. Enemy nations did not hear level 4 body armor at the time and at the time, of vietnam, they did shoot the M16 full auto a lot in combat vs today where troops are generally trained to shoot semi auto in rapid fire. Now that the opposing side are starting to be near peer, we need to start thinking on what to shoot at them with.

I have a 14.5 pin/weld LMT/Hk416 hybrid (MARS-L ambi lower, 416 upper), with 416A5 furniture. I was expecting it to be an absolute heifer when completed, but was pleasantly surprised to find it lighter than my LVOA, my 14.5 p/w SOLGW/FCD LRF/URF build with DD MFR XL 15in forend, my SIG556, Arsenal SAM7SFK80-R, and lastly, my commission built retromod Hk93 clone (PCS33 from Parabellum Combat Systems.) Obviously the shorter 14.5 in barrel compared to the 16in on the M27 and MR556 dictates less weight, also the 416A5 furniture possibly makes a difference.

no its not, anything in 5.56 right now is dumb due to proliferation of body armor and magnified optics. Right now you need rifles with more range and more effect on target both categories 5.56 is notoriously bad at ... 5.56 was great in age where troops used iron sights and wore at best soft flackjackets not when everyone is running around in armor capable of stopping 5+ rounds of 5.56 and using 1-8x LPVOs. Going to full power round makes more sense than ever and frankly should have been done decade ago for Afghanistan

I might be wrong, however I believe a machine gun assigned to a squad is technically called a "Squad Weapon", thus a replacement machine gun would be classified as "Next Generation Squad Weapon." That leads me to believe a newer weapon system carried by each individual person would be classified as the Next Generation Weapon System.

not the but part of the program NGSW ie XM250 / M250 is replacement for squad machinegun, they just tacked on new primary rifle using the same cartridge which was the XM5 now M7 M250 will be replacing M249 AND M240 while M7 should replace infantry rifles unyfying infantry rifles, Designated marksman rifles, Squad Automatic Weapons and General purpose machineguns under one single cartridge

Any chance you guys would do a similar series on 6mm ARC? Apparently it started as a special project for JSOC but was ditched to free up funds for the 6.8 (allegedly). However FN just showed off a new rifle chambered in a 6mm cartridge, that looks very similar to what Hornady has in the 6ARC.

How is 277 fury that different from 6.5 Grendel? Other than the extreme pressure, if this was done to a Grendel round “ the steel reinforced case” I wonder how it would compare.

6.5 grendal is just an intermediate cartridge, but .277 fury or 6.8x51 is basically a full-power cartridge, it has almost same kinetic energy as 7.62x51 but better muzzle velocity and ballistic, which also mean better penetration (same energy but smaller size)
