Aladdin Oil Lamp : How to change your wick

Aladdin Oil Lamp :
Learn how to properly assemble and use your Aladdin oil lamp in these helpful videos.
In this video I show you how to change the wick in your Aladdin oil lamp. Should not require any tools just a , stick , pen, or small pair of scissors to assist you with sliding the wick down through the burner assembly. Be sure not to touch the top of your wick if you can help it and try not to deform it very much.

Excellent video! I only use my lamps for emergencies so they've gotten a little corroded over the years.. I will try to clean them good before I reassemble. When I did the first one I realized I was being a little too delicate getting the wick holder down into the feeder. It actually took a little shoving to get it to engage but once I figured it out it was great. Also the newer wicks have a paper feeder attached to the ends so it was very easy to get it through the assembly. Thank you!!!

Success! I got one of the burners all cleaned and a new wick installed. Getting that riser to catch and work is a trick, there is a feel to it when it works right. I also charred the wick and now it's soaking in new fuel. Thanks for your videos! They really help.

Thank you for the demo. I watched it first before tearing into my project. I have the New B model and found that the procedure is different. The wick raiser goes in from the top and you have to thread the wick legs down through the burner and snap in the rivet lugs. Its not as bad as I thought it might be. The next problem was that the flame was spiking yellow on one side and blackened the mantle. It wasn't the new wick's fault. You would never believe it but a spider web was covering the inside of the air holes under the burner. Gumout carb cleaner and an air blast fixed the problem. I lit the lamp tonight on the roof deck for 2 hours. This lamp hasn't been used since WWII so everything had been frozen up with varnish. Carb cleaner and a heat gun helped free it all up. It was well worth the time to get it functional again. Apparently Aladdin was the peak of oil lamp technology. The light was nice and bright white. It was brighter than 8 of my Dietz lanterns burning tonight. I think Gramma would have appreciated Cree LED's back in the day. No fire hazard!

I also have a model B and now I understand your comment better. The wick has to go in from the top, and then the riser from the bottom. That seems to be an improvement over the design in the video because there's a lot less fiddling involved.

I have 2 Aladdin model 23's that sat for a long time without being used. The kerosene evaporated out of them and now the wick turner won't move the wick up and down. 😕 I can't get the flame spreader or the piece under it (I can't remember the name of that piece) off, neither will move. I'm thinking I might need a solvent to dissolve the residue this keeping these pieces glued together- what should I use?

Keep in mind that the #6 up flow has the tube up above base = equal to the height of it setting to work,,ok?

What about a barely used lamp with a stuck (from dried varnish?) That won't go up or down. The wick looks new from the bottom, but the lamps been sitting long enough for it to get stuck.

+61loneviking Rust is probably to blame. I would take it apart and soak the whole stuck part in kerosene. Then replace the wick! :)

But it's the wick thats stuck. The bowl has kerosene so the wick can't be dry. The burner looks new, so does the wick that I can see. And yet, it isn't moving.

+61loneviking Take it apart! Maybe you just have it jammed. Use a pair of needle nose pliers to pull down on the wick from the bottom while turning the knob. Might help loosen it.

I have 3 #23 Aladdins and they're so temperamental I bought three #3 Queen Anne burners to replace the horrible Aladdin burners. Just bought a new wick for one Aladdin burner and the wick raiser won't catch the metal clips. it raises up and down but the pops right off the wick. USELESS. Also, one would think Aladdin (or SOMEONE) would develop a wick that isn't so high maintenance. (I have a 1900s center draught lamp that works perfectly so it's not that I'm completely clueless.) And another thing... I'm burning paint thinner/low odor mineral spirits at $13/gallon and it works fine in a center draught lamp.

are you kidding me?? how did these old fashioned lamps become so complicated to use? jeese. At least you informed us not to buy an Aladdin lamp, thanks for that.
