The saddest thing is, this movie cleaves a lot closer to the original story. There was a LOT of nonsense in the original tale, which makes sense since Scheherazade was making it up on the spot (at least, according to legend).

What's bad is this cheap thing is closer to the actual story. The Ring Genie was in the tale, but Aladdin (and the villain) still needed the lamp because the Ring Genie could only really protect and teleport. The Genie of the lamp was far more powerful, and capable of greater feats, while the genie of the ring was weaker, and could do far less. However, in the original tale, the villain spent longer convincing them that he was a relative. Also, there was no wish limit...ever. Also, genies were dangerous bringers of chaos in middle-eastern tales, so it's actually a good thing he didn't release it. All the crappy cheap versions of Aladdin are somehow closer to the original story. How does that even work?
@Thane39998 жыл бұрын
Actually, lamp genie had a limit on wishes. It was the ring genie that did not.
@herschalshep8 жыл бұрын
Neither of them had a limit, actually. The original fable had the ring genie be weaker and basically used for protection and teleporting while in the booby-trapped cave. Y'know, there's actually a Good Times entertainment version of Aladdin too. It follows the original tale closely as well. Even surprisingly had the guts to have Jafar (I don't remember his name in the GT version) die by falling on his own sword. They clearly show it pointing up through his back under his robe.
@Thane39998 жыл бұрын
Herschal Shep Well, the ring genie was replaced with carpet in Disney version, so I don't complain. But I have to be honest, even if Disney skewed up arabian/chinese mythology a bit, I still liked their Alladin more. Can't same the same for Jungle Book, Little Mermaid and Frozen though, where I liked original tales better.
@frauleinfunf8 жыл бұрын
It's because they just transpose plot points straight from the story, and don't take the time to consider what would work and what wouldn't in a standard three act movie structure, as that takes time and skill no one working on it has. They also don't take time to consider any contradictory elements since addressing what the source material didn't takes too much creativity. The same can be said for fairy tale knock offs that end following the story closer than the more popular Disney movies.

The reason why not-Jafar wanted the lamp because it housed a much more powerful genie. In the original tale, There were two genies: the ring genie, and the lamp genie. The ring genie was weaker, only being able to do stuff that require physical strength, whereas the lamp genie was stronger in that he was able to bend reality to grant wishes. This movie is actually more accurate to the tale than the Disney version. And yeah, as much as people dislike Disney for messing with the source material, at least you can see why they did so.

+Nuggetlover96 yes, but the public consciousness is the Disney version, so even if he does know the original story (not saying he doesn't), he might be talking about how confusing it is to the average movie-watching audience. Though it made a bit more sense in the original story as the Ring (Shara, let's call her) was weaker (but I THINK she could grant infinite wishes, whereas the Lamp could only grant a certain number) than the Lamp (who never got a name, as far as I know, besides Genie in the Disney version. And Erazor in Sonic and the Secret Rings.) Here...they're both kinda equal in terms of power.

The original tale being made up on the spot, (according to the legends of Scheherazade telling the story), definitely explains some of the odd elements to this version. Also, interesting to see the original tale taking place in China; it makes a lot more sense for Aladdin to call Jafart Uncle as an honorific. This film is still janky as heck. "Ive already started my call to the master of the underworld, if he finds out I could have just asked my owl I'll look like a fucking idiot", lol Phelous.
