Thank you so much for the information Aladi. Has been really helpful. I have been given a TA scholarship as well for this coming fall and I really want to know these: *Were you taken through any training prior the job? *How were you able to schedule your normal student hours with TA working hours without clash? *Was your normal school days and TAship take place simultaneously or were done on separate days? *Did working as a TA affect your normal school grades, like negatively? *Was the pay enough for you to fend for your self or you had to take on another job?
@AladiAkoh2 жыл бұрын
Congratulations on your TA award! Interesting questions. 1. Not exactly, but we had weekly meetings with the professors to discuss the weekly labs and programming assignments. ( I might make a video about this in the future). 2. No. Because I was working in the same department I was studying. Labs were only held on Tuesdays and Thursdays while most of my graduate classes were held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. 3. Number 2 answers this too. 4. No, it did not. I made sure I planned ahead for everyday. This way I was able to allocate specific time for grading, studying, doing my assignments, and preparing for labs, etc. 5. Pay was definitely not enough to cover all my expenses. I was in debt 💸 too 🥲. I recommend that you watch the following videos for more clarification. I'll just add to Aladi's response based on my experience. I'm currently a TA as a first year student. 1. I agree with Aladi, just weekly meetings. P.S: ASK QUESTIONS!!! 2. I'm also teaching within my department, so there's no clashing situation. The schedule is usually fixed from the beginning of the semester based on when you'll be available. 3. In my case, I teach and take classes on the same days. I have at least one class everyday. 4. To be honest, the teaching assignment is time consuming and somewhat stressful. I won't say it directly affects my grades, because my grades depend on a mix of more factors, but it surely plays a role. You don't have all the time in the world, so you have to be a pro at managing your time well. I really don't want this response to sound discouraging. But I'll say, Grad school is hard but doable. 5. The pay is okay😄. For me, full tuition is covered and I receive biweekly paychecks which are sufficient to meet my basic needs and some savings.

My husband has been a professor in the US for 13 years. He's originally from the Middle East but because he's been in the US for so long (Masters, PhD, and teaching), he has little to no accent. However, his students often cite his accent as a reason they did poorly in his courses. I feel that often when we see or perceive someone to be from overseas, we imagine their accent to be much stronger than it is in reality. I've seen this too since I converted to Islam and wear hijab, I've had people who tell me that I barely have an accent even though I have no accent. I'm just a white girl in hijab but because they imagine I must be "foreign", they hear an accent. I just thought this was an interesting context to add to your student's comments.

TA I can relate, you have to be confident and know you are smart.Also don't be too hard on yourself when you get some bad reviews. A student came to me at a time, they heard some of their classmates saying they'd give me poor reviews and they wondered why they'd do that. I was like I am not ice cream, everybody cannot like me. So best believe some people will be ridiculous with those reviews
