Alam's Own House by Dibyendu Palit || Detailed summary in Bengali

► 'Alam's Own House' is a story of nostalgia, identity and partition. Alam, a Muslim who migrated to Dhaka after the partition of Bengal, returns to his ancestral house in Kolkata after three years. He hopes to meet his childhood friend and love interest Raka, a Hindu who lives in the same house with her family. However, he finds that the house has changed and Raka has left for Delhi without meeting him. He receives a letter from her explaining that she could not overcome the 'barriers' that separated them. Alam realizes that he has lost his connection with his home and his love, and that he belongs to neither place. He leaves Kolkata with a sense of emptiness and alienation.
► ABOUT AUTHOR :
Dibyendu Palit (1939-2019) was an Indian writer of Bengali poems, novels, and short stories. He was born in Bhagalpur, Bihar, and lost his father at a young age. He took responsibility of his family and completed his master's degree in comparative literature from Jadavpur University. His struggling days were a source of inspiration for most of his writing. He published several novels and short stories, some of which were adapted into films. He received many awards, such as Ananda Purashkar, Bankim Puraskar, and Sahitya Akademi Award. He lived in Kolkata and his son Amitendu Palit is an eminent economist.
