The 15sm barely moves the bridge lower at all. Unlike other builders, Martin achieves the 12-fret configuration mainly by elongating the upper bout to encompass the 13th and 14th fret. If you set a 000-15m and a 000-15sm face to face you will see that bridge only differs by about 1/8". I have a 15sm and I will die with it. Great comparison and demo. Thank you.

I agree. I don’t see much of a difference at all, and many people talk about that being one. They’ll also bury me with mine 👍🏼

That is quite a statement in favor of the sm. Do you feel that the highs get outweighed slightly by the lower midrange? When I listen to the 000-15m, it sounds as thought the highs cut through a little better to me. I'm looking to purchase one of the 15 models soon and am torn between all three although I haven't played the 00 and only played an sm for a few minutes and liked it. I did play the 000-15m and liked it as well.
@Bradnick9302 ай бұрын
@@donaldpeters338 Play them side by side if you can. The tone is consistent between the 000 and the sm. The sm is louder overall and to my ears, the bass is slightly more pronounced. That being said, I would probably have bought the 000 if it had the 1.75" nut and the wider string spacing at the bridge. I don't do well with narrower nuts but that is more down to poor technique than anything else. After 50 years as a campfire guitar hack, I'm unlikely to get much better. You can't go wrong with 00, 000, or 000sm.

Each of these sounded great in your demo. I love my SM, she has a really gorgeous bass and it feels to me like I own a vintage 1930s Martin in A1 condition. The Streetmasters look cool, and each one has its own unique wear pattern. The tonewood caveat in the 15 series is something worth knowing. Martin lists these a made of “mahogany” as opposed to “genuine mahogany” which it uses on the 18 series. Martin is a bit cagey about what this means, but a letter from Martin posted on a blog suggested these 15 guitars may be made of either Sipo, Khaya, or Genuine, depending upon supply. Genuine refers specifically to Swietenia macrophylla (big leaf). I have no idea what my SM is made of, but it sounds, looks, and smells great (like hot buttered cinnamon toast).

@CameraLaw Жыл бұрын
This is something that confuses me, Chris. Here we are, guitar nerds, talking about tonewoods night and day. We make our purchasing decisions based on our preferences. And, curiously, when it comes to mahogany, the most important acoustic manufacturer in the world makes it difficult to know what we are buying (or have bought, in my case). I get that there needs to be flexibility due to wood availability, and all these woods make great sounding instruments, but as a prospective buyer, I’d like the same transparency for mahogany (‘cause I love it!) that Martin provides for the many types of rosewoods it uses. And, by the way, the same could be said of Taylor which says it uses “neo-tropical” mahogany which I think (via Google, who thinks for me) may be Honduran big leaf mahogany grown in Fiji (?). Bob Taylor is the most forthcoming speaker on woods and sustainability, including owning Ebony and Koa farms, yet … Taylor’s website is absolutely murky regarding its source of mahogany.

I picked up a D15m in January of this year. It has been my favorite acoustic guitar that I’ve owned. I’ve always been a Martin fan and hope to one day get into the standard series. That said….my girlfriend got me a Taylor GTe for my birthday and that has been giving the Martin a run for the money. Just the playability is really impressive. So I agree with Chris, these US made entry level guitars are 1000% an incredible value for the money. If anyone is interested in these guitars I recommend you get them now. My Martin already had a price hike when I got mine in January, I see it’s gone up again since….act fast.

Good to see you back Chris. I love the 15 series and I have 3 of them, 15SM, 00015M, and my latest D15M. The tone you get from them is just phenomenal and the craftsmanship is classic Martin. I agree with you about the nut width, should be 1 3/4 but I'm used to it but could've been better. I'm torn with having the current gig bag, all of them when I purchased had hardshell cases. I like the look of the Streetmasters, especially that Butterbean tuners and I've yet to see a 00-15 in our local and they are really hard to come by these days. The 15SM I think is the "Majestic" guitar in the line. Slotted headstock, 12 frets, Slope shouldered, simply amazing. It also has lots of history that makes it such a favorite and I tend to compare it to the D15M as for me (my ears at least) its also a strummer.

@@joebloggs8636 I feel that the SM is a lot louder than the 000 due to the bigger body size and that added break angle of the slotted headstock. The tone of the SM is sweeter and I'd say robust due to these features. The 000 tends to be more focused for single notes attack. The 000 is also an amazing and it really shines at fingerstyle and medium strumming. Both of them have advantages over the other, and its a plus to have both.

Great demo! I loved hearing you talk about the series. I don’t find much of a history lesson on these in other demos, so great job there 👍🏼 Black tuners are definitely not my jam. I bought an SM about 8 months ago. I’ll admit that I questioned the tone in the shop but the body shape drew me in. It sounded a little flat, but I got it anyway and in the time I’ve had it, it has bloomed so beautifully. I think the shop was just not a good place to demo it, unfortunately. Sounded better in my home. It sounds better everytime I play it. Completely different guitar from when I bought it. Is the most resonant guitar I’ve ever heard. My wife can’t come into the office to talk to me anymore because it matches the frequency in her voice and starts to ring. I’m much happier now. I also changed strings from D’addario phosphor bronze, to Martin Retro and it brought out the brilliance that the mahogany tends to hide. It took the guitar into dreadnought territory, although the volume didn’t change. But I love the more intimate playing this guitar requires. It changed the game for me. I love it so much. You can see and hear it in my videos as well. Thanks for taking the time!

I have the 000-15M Street master and the 000-15SM. I do prefer the 1 3/4”. I’ve experimented with strings, and put monels on both. In the same tuning, the monels sounded harmonically richer on the narrower nut. They sounded thin on the 1 3/4”. My observation would be, without the added depth in the bout like on the 000-15SM, the narrow nut provides more harmonic depth (overlap) when the strings are slightly closer on the narrower nut, particularly with the more fundamental sound that mahogany creates.
