when i moved to kingston (sth london) in the 70's the first thing i did was check out the music shop, i walked in and the guy was cleaning two guitars, a 66 J45 and a 66 texan - he asked me "what would you like" and of course i said "those" - he told me he'd sell me one, but not both and like a naive child i bought the J45. i didn't realise what i'd passed up for at least another 10-15 years, but when i did i was kicking myself. obviously the J45 is brilliant, i still have it, it's still amazing, but i also had the good fortune to pick up a 69 epi texan last year, (i have recordings of both on my own channel) and i have to say it is just a tad better in the bass. but really they are both mahogany / spruce, apart from scale length they have identical necks, both have been refretted withing a month of one another, both equal second (i have a plastic martin that's better than any acoustic, even it's twin, i have two of those too). the H45 and texan are great guitars, can't really go wrong.

People seem to forget the best music from some of our history was played on certain Epiphones like the Masterbuilt (pretty much same as this in a way) that Noel Gallagher played for years in their prime. I have not had any good interactions anytime I have played Epiphones yet but, you guys have the best reviews and demos plus both down to earth instead of seeming like 2 salesman trying not to be , well, salesmen. lol so hats off to you both and keep bringing us your great content thank you! I,have a couple of Epiphone guitars, one electric and one acoustic. The acoustic guitar is a Texan that was made by the Norllin company. Part of the guitar info tag inside the soundhole is torn off so I have no idea where it was made it's one of my favorite guitars that I own. My bought it in a consignment store back in 98 and gave it to me pretty shortly after he bought it. It's a little bear up, just enough to give it the appearance of having lived a little. It has a perfect action and I love it to death. My brother died about 5 years ago so the guitar has a very special meaning to me now and I would never part with it willingly and is one of my most cherished possessions. I have some really cool guitars and I love them all but the Epiphone acoustic is probably my favorite.

I own one of these from 2021, and i can say its a fantastic guitar. Were there a few quirks from the Montana factory? Yes the nut wasnt slotted perfectly but it's completely functional and intonated correctly. I did swap out the white buttons for a set of the 3 on a plate gold kluson tulips and thats it. Plays great, sounds better than many other guitars in that price range. Put some DR Sunbeams on it and go to town. I chose this because i wanted a standard length neck, not the short scale of the other Gibson acoustics. And inwanted something with a little more character than a D18. This fits the bill in spades. Also having played a number of vintage Gibson and epiphone acoustics from the 60s, i noticed the Epis sounded better every time. Coincidence? Maybe maybe not.

The Texan is a great guitar. I had one back around 1966 and in 1970 traded it in for a 1969 Martin D18. I wished I had kept the Texan. Tom Rush also played one. He lost his in a house fire way back when. I don't know if he ever found another one.

I was lucky enough to test the Texan USA, the J45 and Eastman E10ss against eachother in a guitarshop in Utrecht/Holland… I bought the Epiphone. It is the most resonant, loud and tight sounding slope shoulder I have ever played and with the long scale length I can tune down a half step without buzzing or having to change string gauge. The J45 felt like a toy with the shorter scale length en sounded muddy comparing it side by side. The Eastman sounded clean and crisp but was lacking bass/power.

Epiphone also made mini humbuckers fitted in Peter Green's Les Paul. They were also in a 335 style guitar with a Bigsby. GREAT pickups. BUT, I must say, it's the early Epiphones that were best, they are getting better as years go by, Gibson are taking building of Epiphones more seriously. The Elite Japanese series are excellent.

Wow. I love it. I don't mind having an epiphone. I have a 59 epiphone les Paul that sounds as good as a Gibson and I saved 2 grand. But this guitar has a beautiful tone and sound. I was expecting good but this far surpassed my expectations.

Would I feel the same way ab it if it was USA made and carried the USA price? I don’t know. Part of me would prob want that headstock to say Gibson if I’m spending that much. Not sure if that says more ab me or the clear effectiveness of Gibson/Epi branding.

I just played one in-store yesterday. As a 2021 D18 owner, it sounded very close to the sweet spot of my D18. So similar, I smirked that I can’t just buy the same sound. The neck is super thin as far as fret width. It feels like a pencil, so yeah, not hard to play but good for smaller hands.

@@rexrathtar3893 Not an appropriate response. All other guitar reviewers discuss the issues I asked about. Telling me to come into the store in order to get answers to basic questions will cause me to never want to visit your store. Sorry. Need to revisit your attitude.
@rexrathtar38932 жыл бұрын
Or alternatively, you could drop the entitlement. That the guitar is only available in store is a matter of fact. Another matter of fact: it's not my store and I'm nothing to do with it. I'm just telling you that although your questions would be relevant for a guitar that was available online, for this particular guitar, Gibson will only let Alamo sell it to an in-store customer. So if you want to buy it from them, you will _have_ to go to the store. You can be as upset as you like, but it won't change that fact.

Absolutely. Gibson has spent decades driving the Epiphone brand firmly into a particular pigeon hole (namely, budget, Asian-built). Brands do have value.

@davidevans31752 жыл бұрын
When I started (1969, I was 14) a lot of my friends - older guys who could really play - played Epiphone acoustics. They were considered "real" guitars and they were very nice. That's why the Beatles and lots of people played them. Back then you had "cheap guitars" and "real guitars". No-one really even knew they were owned by Gibson. Pick up a '66 Texan and you'll know. Eventually Gibson built them as an off-brand cheap guitar and their reputation plummeted. It's not us being snobby, Gibson is the one that, in later years like the 80s, built and marketed them as budget guitar. Now they say "hey Epiphone is a good guitar" and we say "ya USED to be until you ruined them". We'll see if the've come back. Gibson as a company is dubious, in my opinion. "Inspired by Gibson" is the bullshit line of the century.
