FYI for anybody trying this in 1.15 or later (maybe earlier?) I had to leave out the "normal" for mine to work. It wasn't there to begin with but I added it per this video and ended up taking it back out to get it to work. Cheers!

I've been customizing my texture pack for years (years before Jan 2017 when this was posted even) but I never tried doing block variations because I thought it would be too complicated, but you've shown me that it's really not that hard given that I already know enough about creating textures and I'm knowledgeable enough to not be intimidated by a little bit of code alteration.

Id recommend using only one layer on top as the "edge layer" and using it like a mask for all layers, that way you will only ever have to edit the mask if you want to edit the edges

Where have you been all my 6 years when I've been making my pack. Never had an idea to draw textures like you do, with opaque pencil tool, I always do it with thin brush and keep every shade and light in separate layers, gets messy real fast.

I was about to do one on block modeling then I found out the program I use (Cubik PRO) is outdated and unavailable, so I got the new one (Cubik Studio) and now I'm learning it so that I can teach it. Expect it soon.

Had a hard time figuring out how to apply this to a more complicated block like the newish Warped Hyphae. Got there eventually applying the same basic structure: square brackets within each "axis", encompassing all models, each model in curly brackets, separated by commas. so.. i actualy don't know if i did something wrong, or is something wrong. I seen that in te "models" folder i don't have the "block" folder. i recreated it and created the "json" from your vid. i did made the stonebrick_mossy "json" . Also in the "blockstates" no folders or json files. i don't know what's wrong. maybe i'll try again. also big thanks 2 u. i learned some leasons.

1) you can use modelling programs 2) modifications are more advanced than just adding a new block 3) just put the textures vertically and create a .mcmeta file (more info: minecraft.gamepedia.com/Tutorials/Creating_a_resource_pack#Animation_Properties)
