I’m so tired of the amount of disrespect Alan get nowadays. This man, with a well-regarded reputation, in his 80s, honestly admitted he was wrong and didn’t foresaw the financial crisis in front of the whole world. The amount of courage that takes is formidable. I bet none of you would’ve done the same. Others, the greedy bankers and consumers, corporate heads, regulators who actually caused the crisis were lying, making excuses, pointing fingers. Only Alan, disregarded the legacy he has built for eight decades out of nothing, was brave enough to take responsibility and tell the truth. Great respect! Dr. Greenspan. You’ve taught me the greatest character!

Very interesting. I think now that Alan Greenspan is older now and is no longer with The Fed, he seems (dare I say) more honest and true to his original ideas before joining The Fed. I may have to listen to this interview again, because he was saying some very interesting stuff in regards to Gross Savings. I loved it when the topic of gold came up and they basically cut that topic short when Greenspan asked the question, "Why do central banks own gold now?" 9:09
@islandbee8 жыл бұрын
David Frigault This is true. Senility has made him more honest.

David Frigault Even though he held the position as the Chairman of The Fed, I think a lot pressure was put on him to do what he did ala the Greenspan put. It's a shame that he could not freely incorporate the philosophies that held true to when he wrote his Gold and Economic Freedom paper in 1966. We probably would be living in a different world today.
@islandbee8 жыл бұрын
David Frigault I think if we would have returned to a gold standard, we would have been much more prosperous. As long as the planet Earth is a closed economic system, gold is the best money in mankind's history. Being put on a gold standard puts the "golden handcuffs" on governments from overspending. You don't have the gold, then you can't spend anymore. And since nobody can create gold out of thin air today, it is still a superior money over fiat money. And then along came Bitcoin. An absolute game changer in value transfer today.

Greenspan's great. He can still communicate in a way that demystifies things that some might prefer remain clouded. His explanation of negative interest rates is a case in point; and it's a shame they ran out of time before he could finish really going into it. The spread between different financial instruments (he used yields on Italian debt vs Swiss debt as an example) really is a driver in these weird rates. He was the chairman for a reason and it's crystal-clear why. He knows his stuff, is extremely intelligent and loves facts (statistics, economic data, historical events, etc). This is the kind of person you want making calls on the US economy; and the United States was fortunate to have had him serve in that capacity.

To quote Alan Greenspan from one of his answers before the US congress, his "understanding of global economic forces is fundamentally flawed". He did not just "experience" a rapidly deteriorating current account deficit, he had a hand in creating one. Why anyone would be asking his economic opinion on anything after the admissions he was forced to make to the US senate is beyond me.

LET ME GIVE YOU SHEEPLE CAR WORSHIPPERS SOME ADVICE, PUT OFF BUYING A HOUSE OR CAR UNTIL NOVEMBER, BECAUSE YOU'LL BE ABLE TO BUY A CAR OR HOUSE FOR HALF THE PRICE, IF YOU'RE LUCKY ENOUGH TO STILL HAVE A JOB. I agree with you on too low interest causing too much debt. People cant afford a $30,000 home that will last a long time, but they afford a new $30,000 car that rusts instantly, because the car interest is lower than a house interest. Low interest will make people buy new cars like crazy, thus car dealers will jack the price. Sheeple will sign the dotted line for 100 years on a car. I think right now the car companies have already stockpiled new cars for the fall. But fall will fall! Everyone has a new car already, who in hell will buy a new car. So cars on the lot wont sell, leading to layoffs in the car business. When the car people are laid off, they wont buy food, so stores will lay off. So how are all these people layed off going to pay for their car. Thats why the stock market will crash in October. Bankrupties will rise for taxpayers to foot the bill. Then one can buy a repossessed car or house for nothing. Here is a good thing about the upcoming depression. There will be no temp jobs, the temps will be all laid off. But here is the problem. Temps pay cuts goes toward a fulltime workers pay. If there is no temps, then how is a fulltime worker going to be paid?

America (or should I say Bloomberg?) you embarrass yourselves using this guy who is basing all of his "speculative" opinions on a time when Gordon Brown, the "war criminal "Blair puppet" was in power. The current UK climate compared to then is night and day, which can also be said for the EU. No disrespect to the old gent but you wouldn't ask a CEO of a company that had left that company a decade or so before to give you advice on company policies based on the current climate. Not if you're smart anyway. Listening further on, this guy is clueless. The current state of Greece is because of the EU. The "downfall" came about when Greece accepted the Euro currency. What people seem to have forgotten is that the EU parliament put a lot of pressure on countries to accept the currency and fed a lot of lies and subtle threats during the process. A single currency will have a positive or negative effect based on the countries economy and trading hence the downfall of Greece. He speaks as though they are some insidious cancer that cheated their way into the EU. I take back that respect in reference to this and say he shouldn't be sourced as an advisor period.
@mattg41838 жыл бұрын
The downfall of Greece is not down to the EU/Eurozone. Greece came into the Euro with a high level of sovereign debt, once the 2008/2009 global financial downturn hit, Greece came out stating their Sovereign Debt was far greater than they had thought and they were in serious trouble; which required a serious bailout and severe austerity measures. Had the full extent of Greek debt been understood, they more than likely would not have been allowed into Eurozone in the first place.
@VonCoco19448 жыл бұрын
Matthew - In reality, the Greeks, conspiring with Goldman Sachs, blatantly lied about their financial position in order to join the EU. Of course the EU were more than willing to go along with this lie because of their megalomaniacal obsession to continue to expand the European community at any and all costs to further the ambition to establish The United States of Europe and emerge the most powerful political and economic block in the world. Naturally, this doomed project will fail at some point.

Ah OK that makes sense as to why he was so harsh re: cutting Greece loose and why Greece crashed so hard and as to why people are saying it's better for Greece to be cut loose. I still think the Euro is a flawed monetary system benefitting some, detrimental to others. I'm not great on politics (ADHD can be a pain at times when trying to make sense of something) but even so I think it's difficult to glean the actual truth and facts with all the scaremongering and fabrication coming from all sides, especially leading up to the referendum. I've spent many hours trying to make sense of it all in order to make the most sensible choice in this referendum. Considering how the political stage has descended into extreme underhand tactics and slanderous accusations (nothing new there) to the point that politicians don't even bother to pretend that they care for the wellbeing of their respective nations so I made the right choice and that was to leave. I think that was justified with the announcement to go ahead with this "superstate agenda" with plans to assigning all governing power to Brussels. Maybe for me personally and the final sway on my decision is my personal experience of knowing what it is to live in a country that governs itself and the importance of a nations voting power to uphold a democratic system. Is it flawed? yes, but once that governance is made unaccountable to the people it governs democracy is lost and as history has shown fascism starts to emerge. My speculation now is that bankers will manipulate the economies and trade and blame it on BREXIT but over time things will pan out after a lengthy and potentially roughish ride. We still have much to offer that benefits the EU. N.B. i won't delete my original comment for the purpose of dialogue and clarification, specifically your response but I stand corrected and thanks for the clarification.

I just love how the former head of the Federal Reserve (Private Bank) admits that since 1913 (the creation of the Fed) the country has been on a downward cycle. "the Euro Zone cannot go on structurally the way it's put together now: it's fundamentally the northern states of the Euro Zone funding the southern states, and the result of that is that you have an unstable system which cannot go on indefinitely" So just like the USA, except swap "northern" and "southern" with "blue" and "red".

The EU is not a Free Trade Zone... It is a quasi-federalist supranational entity that happens to have a customs union and is controlled by Corporations and Jewish Bankers. The Euro was always a terrible idea because each country in it run at different speeds.

How come he is given time on air when proven either so fundamentally wrong or so fundamentally notorious in lies, probably both actually. Anyhow, the question stands, what interest does Bloomberg see in putting him on?

what caused all the problem has been his and people like him, also neoliberalism. Ask why less than 1% is as wealthy as half of population globally?!!!

in reply to jram0001, the usa does not need to take control of the federal reserve, it needs to abolish the federal reserve, the federal reserve is about how to manipulate the economy and history has shown us that is a very bad idea that results in huge bubbles that eventually burst, it hurts savings, creates huge social unequality, taxes the people that want to save, and it is a violation of the constitutiin, it is much better to have a free economy, go back to a true gold standard or better yet use a digital currency simulating the gold standard that can not be easily manipulated.

He's worried about lack of productivity and wage growth - but who do we have to thank for that? A bankocracy that has us competing to borrow ever more just to buy a place to live, and accepting influxes of cheap labour that encourage a low wage earning, low value added economy that leaves everyone on subsistence wage levels. How are you going to have a consumer society in those conditions? The only winners are bankers and rich capitalists, but once they have killed wealth creation - what will any of us have left? Now who is responsible for this situation? Incidentally, it's ironic that he is praising Gordon Brown and Tony Blair - it's enough to make a cat laugh.

no discussion of the massive imbalance of wealth as a cause for the global drop in living standards, merely sniping at "entitlements" i.e. taking MORE wealth from working people and using it to save the rich

Obviously I am not a Jew. I resent the fact that so many people who are always ready to point fingers at the Jews with baseless accusations framed by conspiracy theorists.

Entitlements a problem? No Mr Greenspan, not at all, we just need to withdraw the funds from all the offshore accounts from which the stolen money from the working class is currently residing.

How many of you commenting are economists? Mathematicians? Yes he was the kind get central banker during the Bush years and he was during the Clinton years. He helped save Brazil, Japan, Isreal, and Central America in the 80s to early 90s. I was a fed funds trader on 9/11. Few have any idea how that day played out how close the banking system went to total disarry. I credit him and only him to keeping the system viable during that situation. I want to hear the commentary of LIBOR and Brexit. The English are responsible for global transfer pricing in the global economy. The Brexit shakeup is just an opportunity to make money from rich smart investors. Brexit is an anti German and anti Muslim social vote in my eyes. But hating on Greenspan how about an educated position. are you a Moneterist or a Keynesian? An anarchist? Communist? No one system is sufficent imo. The question is what do we want out of society? What do we want out of our governments? Who is keeping the majority from it's will? Freedom is a funny thing. Because 51% is not a real majority. It is divisive like the American Presidential vote. The Fiscal policy of most developed countries has been horrible for too long on a Global perspective. I say science and massive spending in science is the solution. Space travel, discovery and put people to work seeking truth.
