The lady he is dancing with in the video is actually his wife, married since 1979, had three kids, and still married today. This song is an autobiography that was written for her and released in 2003. Alan has several "real Life" songs he has recorded.

Played at my grandfather's funeral to a video collage of pictures from his life. It definitely is sad and happy at the same time. Like our lifetime experiences are in retrospect. Thank you for reacting and for listening. Let the message of the song inspire you to live each day for the love that only comes from God. Best wishes Empress.

Alan is such a great songwriter and performer so I love a lot of what he does but what’s so special about this song to me is how it doesn’t candy coat the struggles people often go through. No one said marriage and raising kids is easy but man is it worth it! The song mentions how the start was hard and how life threw them some curves which happens. Also, how they’ll break each other’s hearts and hopefully bend but not break the marriage. How having kids can teach valuable lessons to the parents who have to let go of so much of themselves and put the kids first which often brings the parents closer even though the job of raising kids is one of the hardest yet most rewarding things they’ll ever do. It also talks about how our perceptions and values change as life moves on and how ultimately we’d do it all again, the struggles, the hurt, the broken trust, the rebuilt trust, the joy, and the love. It’s a masterpiece and had I not been married for 17 years with two kids this song wouldn’t have the same impact on me as it does now. My favorite songs by the icon Alan Jackson are Remember When, Livin’ on Love, Where Were You, Small Town Southern Man, I’ll Try, Here in the Real World, Drive, She’s Got the Rhythm, and Monday Morning Church.

Three years ago my younger brother unexpectedly past away with a heart attack. After his funeral, I spent the entire hour and a half drive back home with this song on repeat. Tears were gushing every second of the drive. I remembered every little thing we did and shared together. Yes, it can be a very sad song, but it also brings back the memories of all the good times. I think this song allowed me to cry out much of my deep sorrow. Thank you ma'am for playing this song. A beautiful woman with a seemingly beautiful heart, playing a beautiful song. How great would it be if this divisive disoriented life around us could share this beauty in unity. Hopefully some day. God bless all.

If all of us men had the natural ability to sing to our ladies like this there would be a lot less divorce. Tip to the ladies. Not all men are poets. Not all men have the skill to present our feelings in a way that is easy to see. But know this. Just because we don’t have the skill to sing it or the skill to put it into words you understand, that does not mean we don’t feel that way. We’re just not all good at expressing it.
