It is more important to consider how most of Americans of that time were racist (and even eugenists) . Lovecraft is a man of the XXe century and judging him with contemporary ideas seems a bit meaningless.

He also had gay friends, so yeah he wasn't the Klansman type some modern critics try to paint him as. He was clearly a conflicted person.
