Alan Page Highlights - MVP

The 1970's was dominated by great defenses like the Steel Curtain, the Fearsome Foursome, the Doomsday Defense, and of course, the Purple People Eaters. Each of those defenses had a Hall of Fame defensive tackle to lock down the middle. Minnesota had arguable the greatest of them all in Alan Page, who wrecked offenses for over a decade as part of the purple gang. His legendary 1971 season saw him win the MVP, making him one of only two defensive players to ever win the prestigious award. And it could be argued that his football career is probably the least interesting part of Alan Page's life story.

Part of what made Alan so great was the fact that he was so smart. Watching some of these tapes, you can see that he never ever bites on the fake. Not once. Everyone else is running after the running back who doesn't have the ball except Alan, he never breaks his stride on his way to the QB for the sack.

With Aaron Donald tearing up the modern day NFL as an undersized but freakishly talented defensive tackle, I decided to shine a spotlight on the man who paved the way for players like Donald and John Randle. Alan Page's game-breaking ability combined with fellow hall of famer Carl Eller and iron-man Jim Marshall to form the front line of the legendary Purple People Eater defense. His ability to rip through offensive lines took attention away from the other great pass-rushers on the team, and he had the underrated ability to anchor against the run. This defense paved the way to four Super Bowl appearances in the 1970’s. Page’s own brilliance garnered him the Most Valuable Player Award in 1971, as the he and the Vikings superb defense dragged a thoroughly uninspiring offense to the playoffs. He finished his career in Chicago as a still excellent pass-rusher for the Bears, before hanging up his cleats for good in 1981 and practicing law full-time. I hope that you guys and gals enjoy watching this video as much as I enjoyed making it. I did some color grading, and I tried to retime all of the clips, to make every play look like it did in real time, rather than the crappy slow-motion that NFL films loved. As a Vikings fan, it was fun to go back and watch highlights of the team during their heyday. I want to take a minute to rant about “This Week in Pro Football” episodes though. Most of the episodes pre-1970 are missing, which is understandable. So there’s probably some early-career Page highlights that would’ve been included if I had them. But it seemed like after 1975, the episodes started to highlight the offenses more and more, which meant that finding defensive highlights was rare. For instance, in 1976, Page had 18 sacks and goodness knows how many tackles for loss! But TWIPF only showed a total of THREE Page highlights in the 14 episodes from that year. So it was annoying to know that Page made all of these fantastic plays that were not shown, since NFL films decided that it was more worthwhile to show a ho-hum Fran Tarkenton pass instead. Anyways, that’s enough ranting for one day. As always, please let me know what player you would like to see next. It can be a NFL or collegiate player, or it could be a NBA player. - PockyCandy -

@@SCsc864 I'm glad that you enjoyed it! KZbin has a ton of NFL videos that show plays from the last 5 years, but there's not much in the way of 1970's NFL. Most players from this era don't have good highlight videos, despite there being more than enough footage of them. I mean, I didn't realize that I would be able to create a 10 minute video for Page before I started this project.

He's the guy that put the 85, Chicago Bears in the situation to become great on defense. There no reason to beat yourself up weightlifting, the best athletes in league history certainly didn't, he's the example I go by.

An amazing man I met him when I was in middle school he came and spoke in one off my classes he really didn't talk about football all he talked about was him being on the Minnesota supreme Court, a real nice guy, and his pinky finger was broken 9 times, it looked bad I'll never forget that lol

This is when I first became a Vikings fan. And why I became a Vikings fan. Alan was the best player on that defense. But when you watch this film, notice that there are a lot of other great defenders also. For instance, Carl Eller was also amazing. Their defense was really something special to watch in those years.

That was DT Paul Dickson who was the 5th Viking DL kind of like the 5th Beatle, he was fine, just got his bell rung, that was 1969 in the NFL championship game against the Browns.

I wish the NFL will review the old games and credit all the sacks and forced fumbles these lineman got. They deserve the recognition. They were grossly underpaid back then. At least give them the stats to match the toughness they played.

Bud traded him or released him (I forget) because Page got into jogging (which was the fad of the 70’s) and got his playing weight down to around 225 and Bud figured he couldn’t play NFL defensive tackle so light! Page got the message and got his weight back up and had 2 really good years with the Bears…including some good games against the Vikes because he was ticked off.

Pocketcandy nice comparison but alan page played on a defensive line that also included guys like carl eller, jim mashall and larsens. Carl eller was a hall of famer and in 2004 jim marshall made the hall of very good player which is the second tier of hall of fame. Arron donald is a one man wrecking crew.

And yeah as a kid growing up I was scared for my Steelers when they played them in the Superbowl. Rams made it with Ferragamo by the end though, finally. I was sooooooo happy they beat Dallas togettothe Superbowl. And that Superbowl was closer then the final score indicated. The best days of the NFL, no b. s. calls by refs looking into monitors, just good old fashioned REAL 🏈

Roman Gabriel was 6'4" and 225 lbs. He was certainly no slouch when it came to getting physical- whether he was scrambling for yards or trying to tackle a defender after a turnover.
