Although they believe it’s very funny I’ve heard that in retrospect both Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci we’re both conflicted over this scene in later years as they felt Alan is such a narcissist he should never win.

@@NPA1001 That was the issue when Iannucci left the team: there were far too many victories for Partridge and it skewed the character from watching a repugnant man fail to watching a repugnant man 'say the things we want to say but daren't', which wasn't nearly as funny (for me anyway).

Actually was sat on a VT service from Euston to Manchester once (thank god I was getting off at the first stop at Milton Keynes Central!) where the conductor elongated words - wanted to tell him to,well,Alan put it better than I could here!
