The writing here is incredible, I love how disciplined and tight everything is. It's a real skill showing us one thing on screen, but all the while seeing Alan's hand in the development/editting room. I hope they keep building on Alan as a human, and explore that Richard Madely sadness behind the eyes. We all want to see Alan happy ultimately, he needs his Clarkson's farm moment of humility and catharsis. Completely agree about reading the books too @Jesse Daniel Smith

I was in primary in the mid 80s and it was around 1990 the blanket ban came in. It was surreal seeing some of the male teachers having break downs in the middle of class because they had just lost their temper, but realised they couldn't thump anyone anymore lol

Yep, it was basically a chunk of wood aimed at your head. OK, so one side of the board-rubber had a cushion of felt-type stuff on it, but there were no guarantees which side was going to be the one to impact your skull. Crazy to think it was ever "normal."

This wasn't Alan's primary school, it was actually my secondary school. It was filmed at Bishop Thomas Grant School in Streatham, South London where I attended between 85-90. I spent many an hour in that playground and in that gym where he was thwacking that dummy lol.
