Talking about death is such a deep-rooted taboo in our collective subconscious, that it can hardly be a subject of a spontaneous conversation or even a thoughtful reflection. And if death is ever a subject of conversation or comment, then it's always talked about with a considerable amount of aversion, reluctance, and pathetic melancholy. In this speech, Alan Watts approaches the subject of death in such a light-hearted, yet profound way, that the listener can’t help having a hearty laugh upon the most feared event in one’s life, the act of dying. Because man fears what he doesn’t understand, fear of death must be the biggest fear because it is based on the biggest misunderstanding, not only of death as the end of life, but of life as a time span that ends with death.
