Following the publication of The Way of Zen in 1957, Alan Watts embarked on the first of two seasons of his television series Eastern Wisdom and Modern Life in 1959. To distinguish these talks from his popular weekly radio shows, he incorporated playful visual elements into every episode, perhaps none more so than the originally titled, "Zen in Judo and Fencing." In this episode, he demonstrates a cat-like way to fall softly and shows how to use an opponent's weight and momentum to their disadvantage.
