One of the last bastions of the so-called logical thinking is the notion of causality. As a fundamental premise of the way we perceive anything that happens, it's almost inconceivable to question its legitimacy. In his typically straightforward manner of smashing idols, Alan Watts debunks the very fundament of causality as a mere illusion. Our conception of some events as causes and others as effects is rooted in our inability to recognize the fact that there are no separate events and that all events are mutually interdependent.

@@ion6069 Will is an illusion created by the contrast between what you have and what you want. You believe you must expend effort to obtain a goal. You must win but not lose. You create an artificial distinction between "self" and "other," with self on the inside-- sensitive and vulnerable-- and other on the outside-- vast, mysterious and uncaring. So you feel yourself plunked down in the middle of this no man's land, fighting for your life. But the truth is both sides are really "you." There is only the doing with no personal "doer" making it happen. We habitually imagine there must be subject for every verb, but that is just a grammatical convention. We imagine that we have a mind that thinks, but who is the "me" that posseses this thing called mind? What is the mind but the flow of thoughts itself, and what identity do we have other than this flow which no outside person is pushing around, it is just happening, going, changing always. This is a realization so subtle and profound that words cannot easily convey it.

All very fine. So then we have excuses for all kinds of bad behavior ????????????????? I don't think so. Homey don't play dat. The bile says *IT'S NECESSARY THAT OFFENSES COME.* That part seems to agree with Mr. Watts' argument that there are no separate events. And dividing what came before from what comes after is purely arbitrary for the sake of accounting. But it's also true that crimes are sometimes punished . . . when caught and properly convicted. So then why is it necessary for Confucianists to teach *DO NOT DO TO OTHERS WHAT YOU WOULD NOT HAVE DONE TO YOURSELF.* ??????????????????? Clearly they don't teach *JUST DO WHATEVER YOU LIKE WHENEVER YOU LIKE TO WHOMEVER YOU LIKE.* And don't be concerned with consequences ???????????? Sounds like rubbish to me. There ARE consequences to bad behavior.

@@bobaldo2339 i agree that human intelligence is very very limited in comparison with the size of the universe. But . . . simply saying our intelligence is limited brings up another important point. Is it possible to increase our intelligence to the level where " freedom " and " responsibility " will no longer be needed as fictions ??? I assume it will never be possible.
