Alan Watts explores the ‘veil of thoughts’ in money, civilization & progress; before shifting gears to the ‘divine madness’ of marriage & falling in love.
This series is brought to you by the Alan Watts Organization and Ram Dass’ Love Serve Remember Foundation. Visit Alanwatts.org for full talks from Alan Watts.
0:00 - Veil of Thoughts // What Do You Desire?
20:22 - Civilization, Progress, & Meaning // Divination, Gurus, & Responsibility
45:00 - Divine Madness // Marriage & Falling in Love
“Is it only when you’re in love with another person, that you see them as they really are And in the ordinary way, when you’re not in love with people, you see only a fragmented version of that being. Because when you’re in love with someone, you do indeed see them as a Divine Being. Suppose that’s what they are truly, and your eyes by your Beloved have been opened; in which case your Beloved is serving to you as a kind of guru, an initiator.” - Alan Watts

I spent around 25 years reading about Zen before discovering AW. Or AW discovered me. Regardless, his method - erudition - struck home. Suddenly one afternoon after listening to these wonderful talks, it happened. I stopped being me for a while - 'i' got out of the way, and 'I' just 'was'. Im not going to describe it as AW does it much better. Thank you, Mark W and this channel for making this stuff available ☺️

Alan Watts was an intriguing character and so far ahead of his time in challenging the conventional wisdom of established religion. His combined erudition, breadth of knowledge and relatability made him an engaging public speaker and writer. Yet, at the same time, certain aspects of his lived life - involving multiple affairs and addictions - raise almost as many questions as he answers. According to his autobiography, “In My Own Way”, he was the first to shun any idea that he should be regarded as a guru, preferring to modestly describe himself as a philosophical entertainer. Perhaps his ultimate appeal was his profound honesty and lack of hypocrisy. He was one of a kind.

If you follow zen philosophy, there is no contradiction. As Watts repeatedly stresses, there is no black without white. We cannot be anything other than we are. We should just be. Renunciation of worldly persuits misses the point, it is not the goal. There is no goal. I recommend Suzuki's book on Beginner's Mind. 🎯

@@garypuckettmuse hi! Yes! I wonder what he would be saying about all of these recent views of the UFOs and if he thinks that they are a distraction against the New World order that seems to be coming our way. Hypnosis came before psychoanalysis and Gestalt is considered the opposite of psychoanalysis. Freud and many before did hypnosis. He stopped bc of the lady that plunged herself on his lap. TRUE TRANSFERENCE . LOL. Gestalt is Psychosynthesis. Truly, you cannot really have one without the other so if a person gets analyze and analyze and analyze for years of pioneers of pioneers of pioneers, we’re not taking care of the problem today distal says the person can fill the many things from the past that they did, or did not get, and that they can live fully in the present time of the now the everlasting now! Fritz had his best sessions when he put his parents in the empty chairs! he started to start therapy because he was very upset with Freud and Carl Yung also ended his relationship with Freud. Nobody mentions Pierre Janet. He big time influenced Freud and many others.

Omg you are so on it about falling in love It is like lightning Especially when it happens when you are not looking for it Being in love is in a sense a kind of madness A "devine madness" it couldn't be put in better words Total honesty is so important for a relationship to last 👍👍 A fall into love can never be explained Surrender is like being in heaven when there is true love 👍👍 Commitment means commitment and most ppl who don't want to be responsible will not commit 👍👍 It's hard to refuse it Bc it carries an energy of it's own like no other When I feel in love it feels good I think when two ppl commit to each other and their intentions are sincere and want to be in a true relationship, where there is intimacy It's when they are most open to the pleasure of sharing love There's nothing like it ✨✨✨

You’re right! That is an excellent look at it. I had my glimpse some years back, which led to a period of meditation and isolation and slowly becoming into oneness. Understanding ego and understanding that you don’t have to take ownership of the collection stream of thoughts are key. Also love and forgiveness (by seeing all as a reflection of you and vice versa). Life will be much more peaceful at this point. Shit still happens, but you will see through it. You will come to be grateful even for negativity. You will see negative triggers as simply unhealed parts of ego/shadow given to you as a gift from the universe to grow and expand awareness. This is cosmic consciousness ❤❤❤

It's nice, but not important for another person to love you. I would guess most people have known someone that's shown them love, but they themselves felt nothing back. What's important is for you to learn to love. It's good to love an animal or a person without judgement, but the hardest and most important one to love is yourself. Tough love. Just like the tough love that gives us the opportunity to experience life on earth with no judgement.

Our emotions are triggered when our desires are not met or satisfied. Intellectuals avoid social gatherings due to fear of being out of control. Meditation has its limitations; enlightenment is possible when our mind is awake, its desire is to understand the causes of our emotions. Freedom from hate and anger is possible when we understand them. The teachings of Spinoza’s and Gurdjieff’s will help develop a deeper meaning to your life.
