UDimwit not really because he makes you thinks a lot. And the key to meditation is not thinking at all. I get what you mean but no it really isn't....
@UDimwit7 жыл бұрын
Though to think is not to think if you can get that concept of things..You listen to what he says, you think about it, then you apply it in the form of meditation which is not thinking.. just applying the conceptual values in a different form or state... and it is when you don't think that real and true ideas come from out of no where...
@ajs93787 жыл бұрын
The key to meditation is not "to not think" , indeed in one of his talks Alan Watts says exactly this. Meditation is a whole state of being, I can meditate going about my everyday life, it is an inner calm of sorts and a perspective only you can be aware of. To apply a maxim such as you have is to put it in a box , it is like trying to explain love, it cannot be explained by something which it is not, you cannot explain love because it is so very personal and indeed everyone will have a different view which also cannot be exactly felt by another. Meditation is not tangible, Alan Watts does make us think a lot but that is not to say we cannot be in a meditative state whilst thinking. In Savasana in Yoga I ask my students not to empty their minds, indeed that would be impossible, but rather to try to slow down thoughts ; to try to create spaces in between them to calm a busy mind, this to me is how anything and anywhere and any place can be a meditation,they can then take that with them and their inner calm shines out in their interations with others and has a beautiful knock on effect of compassion and acceptance. I would explore this open view of meditation as it is very interesting to oneself. Peace x

Since then I've been obsessed with near death experiences in an effort to find some comfort in where my daughter is (even though I've been a faithful Catholic all my life) You posted 4 months ago - i hope things have gotten better for you since then whether through listening to AW, sleeping better or through some other catalyst. And, just know that people love you without ever having to even meet you. Hang in there and try to focus on seeing life from a different angle.

When I was 15, I remember considering how a person who is blind must see... So I closed my eyes and was listening to everything around me, calculating what I thought was what and what it's aproximent location was... This was causing my brain a lot of work trying to know where everything was without seeing it. So then I stoped, (trying to identify) labeling everything, every sound that I heard. And just listen. Let all the sounds come in all at once (without me "getting in the way" turning it into a process, putting a label on everything... Just let it be.) And for a moment, I swear to you, it was like I could see 360° degrees around me. From kids outside running by the house, cars driving on the road near by, birds tweeting right outside the window that had wind flowing through it because it was open slightly and the clock sitting on the counter clicking. I remember it kinda freaking me out a little bit so I opened my eyes, jumped up and snapped out of it.
@wesnik60504 жыл бұрын
Nah man I expierenced that myself quite a few times albeit on LSD haha but i know exactly what youre talking about i could thinksee everything aroung me the birds in the trees what color they were and everything. I wrote it off as imagination the first few times but after a while and actually seeing the things afterward that kinda changed my perspective on the matter. There probably really is something to that especially considering so many govermental agencies around the world did extensive research into this matter....

As the commenter above I am blind and I think what you did is truly incredible because thats exactly how it is. The same as sight. You don’t look around and label, you observe passively and everything you need to see is there which is exactly what you have to do with sound when you don’t have any sight, all the detail and richness is there if you just shut up and take notice. Its harder with sound though because its very easy to shut down your visual imagination and just see through your eyes but shutting down your inner voice and just listening is more challenging. Sounds to me like you are a very empathetic person and I appreciate you trying to imagine what my perception is like.

"Most people do not have time, because they are not aware of present. Present is the only real time. There is no past and no future."
@relaxjq6 жыл бұрын

@s.b2006 жыл бұрын
Its important to keep in mind that our brains evolved the concept of "past and future" because it helped us survive at a time when we were prey (we learned to plan/organize). Our close cousins chimpanzees and other monkey species don't have this ability, because their ancestors stayed tree-living. But on the ground we were more vulnerable. When our brains got the concept of time, we traded that brainspace and sacrificed other traits that has to do with understanding the present (like reacting fast to something we see). Today this time-perspective still helps us, but like most traits there's an obvious downside to it. We tend to focus too much on future and past. Anthony Pope so hateful toward someone you don't even know. Talk about a mental disability, MFs have an inability to treat each other with respect. Who cares if the guy doesn't know what he's talking about, he's expressing himself. Perhaps you should focus more on yourself. Maybe then you would actually face your own self doubts and insecurities, rather than trying so desperately hard to ignore them that you must distract yourself by putting others down and insulting them as a means to make yourself feel better. Let the guy spout his nonsense and keep that negative energy to yourself, or perhaps let it out into a punching bag or something. Make it productive

I find myself in an almost constant state of meditation, and I must say it's made my life difficult at times. Its makes social situations very difficult. Learning anything that I'm not genuinely interested in. It's like my mind is blank at all times and I have to turn it on anytime i think. Idk how to feel about it but really, it's a blessing and a curse.

Alan watts and all the other gurus, pointers and teachers of self awareness speak of the same message, it just delivered differently by each one of them.
@burnief96366 жыл бұрын
I think the main message portrayed all humor aside, is that we all are the universe literally the same as animals are part of nature. If we don't all get on the thought track we can't thrive as loving and caring people who make our world better.

@@g49613 I don't really think it's pretentious. It's really just a matter of saving face. Worded pretentiously sure but it'd be different if he said I think on another plain from others so much so I don't bother acknowledging anyone else. I get what he means because take an open minded person and a close minded person and put them alone in a room. That won't boad well and heads will butt. It's to avoid that situation really although sad the two can't respect personal opinions.

@@g49613 I have thought I was a part of many different people's and people groups over several decades, I found the fallen human nature like saying someone is pretentious without truly understanding what it's like to be so apart from being a part of today's social groups and materialistic blah blah thinking that you realise how shallow people and pursuits and self propergating selfish mentalitys..really are and you have to speak like them in order to have conversation.. Connection and love are a nessesarty for a healthy soul, ..... being alone, lonely, dissconected For any decent length of years it will either kill you and make you worse of a human or it can make you a deeper thinker, seeing life and human pursuits in a totally different light, even what a true relationship means...suffering and pain once endured can bring a richer life..good luck with your pursuits and growth brother..😊

The real world? Live where it snows. Work outside in the coldest of winter days. When it rains you are going to have to deal with it. Cold and hungry, gives the world a bite to it. Going home, to that place you and your best friend have made, the warmth you share gives rise to fulfillment. The nature of the world reveals itself when you're ready, never before.

The thing is, he talks about thinking too many thought to experience “the real world” , but Alan Watts legacy is exactly that. He is all about thinking thoughts about everything under the sun in inside our existence, and then going around spreading his thoughts on these things. So not only is he denying silence in his mind, he’s taking the thoughts that are denying the silence of his mind and bringing them into the physical word in the form of actual words, impeding on the silence of others. All that being said, I find his lectures to be inspiring and interesting.
@michaelbrown75614 жыл бұрын
Thoughts aren't the enemy Brian. There a part of us and the way we express. All Watts is saying --and this has to be communicated verbally--is to take some time to be silent.

the goal is to learn to find/create space and silence between your thoughts not eliminate them. we are all humans and have to live in the world. learning to observe what is happening inside your head and create a bit of space between the thoughts and your actions is the first step to becoming more present

Well, Jeezuz came to his epiphanies when he was wacked out on hallucinogenics. Same for Guatama Buddha, and other 'enlightened gurus' Unfortunately, every guru claims this 'truth' of reality from the position of the living. NDE's don't count because even doctors fail to reach a concensus on exactly what point one becomes 'dead.' So all we have from gurus are some cool stoner thoughts, but nothing measurable or testable.
