This movie and F13 part 7 were supposed to be the first attempt at Freddy vs Jason (1988) but it didn’t work out so maybe that’s where the writers got the idea to throw subtle jabs.

I don’t know if you realized this but when Kristen was dying, she tried giving Alice her dream power, though successful, the power passed through Freddy as well. Anytime Alice would dream, she was pulling her family and friends into her dream, Freddy used that opportunity to kill then since Alice didn’t know how to control the power yet

False, in a 2017 interview Patricia was asked about Nightmare 4 and she said this: “They asked me to come back for 4 but at that time I was starting to break into kind of meatier roles. I had just done a movie of the week about teen pregnancy called Daddy and I was really liking getting deeper with my work. I love the horror genre and the Freddy franchise but I was chomping at the bit to try other things as an actor.” Another interesting fact, the producers were actually thinking about recasting her during the beginning of Dream Warriors because she had some cold feet on her first day.

@@ryanjacobson2508 - she did an interview about Dream Warriors in 2017 and said the cast and crew were great and that she loves the Freddy franchise. The only issue she had was with a cinematographer who she said was mean to her but aside from that she seems to have fond memories of filming. “We were shooting in a closed down veterans hospital at one point. We were all young and excited and we had these shitty dressing rooms that were basically 3 walls of unpainted dry wall about the size of a single bed. With a door that was made of what felt like cardboard. We signed each others walls and hung out outside and smoked cigarettes and talked about music and laughed. Good times!”

"The Dream Master" made a ton of money at the box-office and I think the dream sequences were considered to be very creative. "Wes Craven's New Nightmare" (which I love, and I think you will enjoy) is the seventh film in the series. You have to sit through "The Dream Child" (Part 5) and "Freddy's Dead" (Part 6) before you get to "New Nightmare." If you didn't really care for "The Dream Master," I'm not sure how you will feel about the next two films. LOL

Actually films success or failure usually depends on the last one released. So more people saw 4 because they liked 3. Less people saw 5 because they were turned off on comedic MTV Freddy. And six had even less but that’s not JUST based on the movie being bad. Less and less people showed up opening weekend. That being said I like 4 but do wish the 3 survivors had lived on a little bit.

This movie was made during a writer's strike and you can tell. The step down in quality is real, but it would be hard to create something as spectacular as Dream Warriors anyways, but yeah, you probably should have had a cocktail. It helps. For me this movie is essential because of Alice and her arc across this and Dream Child. She ties with Nancy Thompson as my second favorite Final Girl. Sidney Prescott being #1, of course. And all thanks to Wes Craven! I don't skip this one, it's just that I love Dream Child so much, I use it as an excuse to multi-task while it plays in the background. Another hilarious reaction!

This is one of my favorite in the series, and it was one of the most financially successful. I really wish Patricia had returned for this one, but the producers wouldn't give her the money she asked for. According to the actor who played Joey, it was basically a quibble over $1000, which just sucks. I think having Patricia back as Kristen would have better set up Alice as the new final girl. Tuesday Knight wasn't a good Kristen. She basically played her as a new character with the same name. I do love Alice, though. Her story continues in the next installment, which is the most critically panned, but I love it. It's very dark and gothic and atmospheric, and Nancy's legacy really does live on in Alice in that movie. In part four, there wasn't enough of a build up for Alice, but I like that her assertiveness and badassery that she only experiences in her daydreams comes to the forefront because of her nightmares. Freddy inadvertently makes her stronger. Thanks for watching this, and I'm so glad you're continuing with the series!

Great review there. 😎👍... Wait until you get to Wes Craven's: New Nightmare (the 7th in the franchise), the orginal director Wes Craven and many other former cast members return for one more 'meta/multiverse' type film, including two very special cast members in very unique roles (not gonna spoil it for ya for you'll just have to see it for yourself. You'll enjoy that one for sure) 😉😉😉

Freddy has power to control the dreams and also how he appears in the dream, but his powers are also derived from the fear of his victims so that's why I think he always chooses to look burnt even in the beginning when he reformed.

I love the whole series, this is a downturn but it’s still watchable and you can enjoy it. The roach motel death is one of my favorites BECAUSE of how uncomfortable and grossed out it makes me. That’s the point right? Also a lot of the kills here aren’t awful.

@@KCohere33 I mostly say a downturn because of the big amounts of 80’s cheese that you can’t really remove from this and the next 2 movies. Lots of puns, and quips, leaning harder into the comedy(sometimes to poor payoff) but I will still watch all of these movies and enjoy them because of nostalgia and also because the kills are creative…

The 5th one is called the Dream Child and then its the new Nightmare after that! Fun fact: Wes Craven took a shot at himself when making scream (96) when Drey Barrymore character said" the first one was good, but the rest sucked" in reference to the A.N.O.E.S movies.

At the time, I used to hate it because it was too colorful, too 80s and too goofy but now after rewatching, it's a lot better than I remembered. I loved the 90s stuff, I love the sets and those effects, not gonna lie they look fucking awesome. Robert Englund said this was his favorite performance he did as Freddy and it's not hard to see why because he steals the movie everytime he's on screen. Regardless if you think he's campier than the last 3 films or if you hate this one, director Renny Harlan succeeded at making him the cool guy, the pop icon that has charisma that's still incredibly evil but also really funny and he has so many memorable lines and scenes. And the themes of self-identity and learning to see your own reflection for once instead of ignoring who you are is very deep and relatable for me. And the ending death to Freddy was savage AF with some outstanding special effects. Of course, it's not flawless like Patricia Arquette not returning sucks and some of the characters were pretty bland or one-note and this was when Freddy really started to learn more to the funnier side. Other than those, I am glad I got to revisit this movie after all these years. I definitely love to listen to the credits song "Don't Be Afraid of Your Dreams" which perfectly defines the entire franchise as a whole.

This one's one of my favorites. The first time I saw it I had a similar reaction to you, where I was a bit underwhelmed, but it holds up surprisingly well on repeat viewings. You're right that the characterization and story are more shallow-good word for it-this time around, the product of a screenplay that was essentially a first draft (due to a writer's strike at the time) and a Dutch director who probably didn't quite get how to make American teenagers act naturally. That being said, the more you watch the film, the less that matters, and the more you can appreciate how stylized, fun, and just buck-wild this movie is; it really grows on you, or at least it did on me. Wes Craven even liked this one, funnily enough. Speaking of, you still got a couple more movies between you and New Nightmare, but it'll be good to watch them first, because that will deepen your appreciation for it, not only because New Nightmare is so much better, but one of the things Craven does is take some of the ideas and concepts from these later sequels and weave them into a more sophisticated story. As though he looked at these movies and said: "That's cute, kids, but let me show you how it's really done!"

Trivia: A writer strike happened during this time, which a lot of or majority of the film was done during production. I saw this one in theaters at 7 years old. My first & only Elm Street in theaters till New Nightmare in '94 & I loved Dream Master ever since. They even played The Fat Boys "Ready for Freddy" music video after the end credits, lights came on, and nearly everyone had left. I still remember that whole memorable night in '88 (yeah, I'm old...ugh). Nostalgia has also kept this my favorite Elm Street & Alice my favorite final girl in the franchise next to Nancy. It's easy to roast the film, but there's a lot it did well though. Music, special effects, casting being examples. As far as comedic Freddy...it was initialized in 3, but yeah it did paint him like a James Bond. Like Jason Lives right in the opening credits, and that's actually beloved by Friday fans though. I could go on about this film, but I also know the majority of feelings about it, although still stronger than 5's controversial Dream Child. Glad there's people out there that enjoy 4 & even 5. Last of the 80's Elm Street films

Dream Master was the first Freddy film I saw, I watch it with my mother on WPIX 11, I believe it was a Thursday night. Freddy is still the only horror icon to scare me, but as I grew older I love his character! This film, along with Dream Child, are my favorites because I love the Alice character. Though Nancy was the first, Alice too me is better because she defeated Freddy on his own turf, in the dream world. Alice being the positive gatekeeper of dreams is such a great idea and explains why she was so powerful Fun Facts: This film was created during a writers strike and finished in like a few months. This film is the highest grossing film in the series Kristen can only pull people into her dreams, no one can call her into their dreams. Joey and Kincaid calling her was futile. The little girl at the beach is actually young Alice.

A Nightmare on Elm Street is probably my favorite horror franchise solely because _most_ of them are watchable. You can have fun with pretty much any of these and the ones you don't like can grow on you (I hated 5 for years, and now I don't mind it at all, likewise with part 7). Though, I got into the franchise fairly young and like, 3 decades ago at this point, so there might be a sort of "comfort food" effect there. The nightmare element also allows for the franchise to explore more fantastical scenes and imagery that you wouldn't normally get from something like a Friday the 13th. Phantasm is also a really good horror franchise to look into if you haven't already -- the first is a bit surreal and then the sequels go more in a "road trip horror" sort of direction but are also a ton of a fun (2 and 3, especially -- 2 can be hard to find streaming, but it's worth it, I think).

I noticed a trend: Friday the 13th: Part 4, Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers, AND A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master are all loved. But the 5th entry in all of these franchises are lowkey hated. Jason wasn’t Jason. Michael looked a fool and Rachel died too quick. And 5 killed off Dan like nothing and had a somewhat clunky pacing. I still like Nightmare 5 more than the other two though.

This movie really grew on me. Most Nightmare films rank the 1st and 3rd as the best, but I think now, I would actually rank this one higher than 3. It’s goofy 80s horror for sure, but Renny Harlin put a lot of energy and creativity into it. It could have taken itself more seriously but I think if they ever tried to re-do the franchise again, they should go for a style like this where it’s just fun and imaginative and take full advantage of the limitlessness of the dreamscape

Sadly, the next one is "Dream Child" then "Freddy's Dead" and then "New Nightmare" so you have to swim through two sequels before you hit the return of Wes! I agree though, this one is a total "meh." Recasting was done due to (according to the documentary) New Line not wanting to shell out the $$$. As always, it was a blast to watch the truncated flick with you! I remember when I saw this one in theaters (I was too young, but my cool Mom bought my friends and I tickets so we got in!) and even then as a kid, I too was let down. At the end of the day, while I like Freddy well enough, I'm always Camp Jason (no pun intended... maybe), with Mikey Myers as my close second. Looking forward to the next film as always!
