You guys should look up the reasons why she sang this song; Billie Joe Armstrong was supposed to perform on that very day, but he couldn't because he was going through a difficult situation regarding drugs and/oir depression, and that was her way to acknowledge him, to pay tribute to him and tell him she was there for support. And you have no idea of how thankful he was when he knew about this, so, this is an artists thing. And apparently you guys do not understand art in its different forms of expressions. No matter what version it goes, it is an awesome song, and Alanis just showed 1 more time how big she is as a spirit.

Green Day were supposed to play that night but the evening before Billie had the Las Vegas meltdown so she was asked to step in. She didn't have to sing this, she could have sung her own song to promote herself but no she did this out of respect. I think it's a nice interpretation of this song and I am a massive Green Day fan.

Everyone's talking saying this cover is bad because it doesn't sound like Green Day but I disagree. Green Day sings Basket Case in a very humorous way but if you listen to the lyrics, they're actually quite sad. They describe a man tormented by mental illness. Alanis' performance really brings that across, and it's all the more touching considering what Billie Joe was going through at the time

I love this version. BJ Armstrong wrote this about his own anxiety disorder and wrote a punkie version, which is fine. Anyone who suffers from anxiety knows that this is a fitting interpretation of the song.
