My cousin was a huge Alanis Morissette fan. She had dreads and was a free spirit. A beautiful young woman who cared more about the earth and others than anything. She was 23 when she passed from leukemia.. I always wonder what she’d be doing today. Hearing this was a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Good music is timeless. The year you were born doesn't matter. Take it from someone that had similar feelings when this song came out and a similar age (I was envying my aunt for being born at a time when animation was just blossoming as an industry. I was 14 or 15.), it doesn't matter in the end. What matters is how much you enjoy it. Though if you like songs of that era, if memory serves, what was popular was Hootie and the Blowfish's "Only Wanna Be With You", Natalie Merchant's "Wonder", No Doubt's... well everything from the album Tragic Kingdom, Blues Traveler's "Run Around", Spin Doctor's "Two Princes", Green Day's "Basket Case". Hanson's "Mmmbop", Spice Girl's "Wannabe", Coolio's "Gangsta's Paradise", Third Eye Blind's "Semi-charmed Kind of Life.", Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn", The Proclaimer's "I'm Gonna Be" that's about all I can think of off the top of my head. Keep in mind I'm not saying they're all good or similar, but that's what was played a lot on radios and stuff. I'm avoiding the really overplayed stuff like Brittney Speares, N'Sync and Backstreet boys and the Friend's theme "I'll be there for you".

a 100% true! I used to like this song mostly because I loved the melody but now as an adult, I really get the lyrics, maybe I'm not forty or more but I've lived a lot of ups and downs in my life and learned from them to be a better person and to treat people better and with empathy because if I had a bad day maybe the others had it worse or the total opposite and that's ok because that's what life is about

@0:16 Reminds me of the days we had audio cassette players/Walkman devices, and we'd try listening carefully to songs and wrote down whatever lyrics we thought we'd heard if we got a casette without the lyrics' booklet. And record magazines themselves sometimes came with lyrical errors and misprints and the internet was still not that common in most households. So at this part of the song, I misheard the lyrics, *"...your heart trampled on,"* and I remember asking my mother what a *"...hot cha-bo-dam"* was....

Sierra Russel I do want to meet her. If it was my choice watch the terrific movie Doctor Strange with her, plus watch 1 day of NHL games with her at a Restaurant could be TGI Fridays or Buffalo Wild Wings since I know they have all nfl or nhl games that aren't local, or NFL on a Sunday afternoon including my favorite team the Titans. I could be unhappy, sad,.or angry and that would fade or be removed if I start listening to AM songs You outta Know, You Learn, Ironic, Etc.

Now that I'm 25 I'm glad I found this CD of hers in his collection! She's an amazing singer she really releases your stress and makes you feel calm I can see why my uncle loved her!

Jasmine Russell Beautiful woman terrific singer, great music videos, and a terrific song writer. Be great to see her play herself or someone else in a MCU super hero movie. I do want to meet her and find out what she is like as a person. Also I know I'm not a great or decent singer with certain exceptions but I would still sing karaoke with her, or with her watching. Scary and exciting at the same time. Also her songs could easily be movies although altered for certain ones so a happy ending happens. Great songs to hear while working out, for dances, to relax, or made happy or feel better because of something bad or terrible, a song to hear before dreaming, etc. Wow that's a high cds collection the highest I heard of.

I think in the video, the idea is she learned to just be herself and do what she wants, no matter what. Despite all the things she's going through and experiencing, she learns to just be herself and not care what anyone thinks of her. I really think she is a genius, but I never saw her iq tests. This album is certainly music genius, though.

The cool thing about Alanis is that she wasn't established yet when she went in and recorded this album, as most of us know. So no one told her the rules, no one told her how to be a pop star, no one told her how to create such amazing music. Sure she had help, but this is so unusual for a major label debut to be THIS impactful for a newer artist on the scene. People just don't appreciate the level of preparedness Alanis had IN HER BLOOD for the work she would create in her life, specifically this whole album.

This needs to be pinned,can they do that on KZbin?! Artists had something to SAY then. Now radio is one long loop of the same thing. Musically and Lyrically like Alanis did.

@bi-polarbear3885 I wasn't calling her anything except unique. I was making a point that she didn't come from a pop-star factory and have her hand held... but if you want to be realistic about it, in her peak she would be considered popular music, with strong radio and TV air time, which is the definition of pop music. It's just pop music today is so terrible that you're connecting some other feeling to the term.
@PaulW4
@PaulW4 2 жыл бұрын
@@sirbandit170 "radio and TV air time, which is the definition of pop music". I disagree with this. I would say "pop" music is music PRODUCED for TV and radio (to appeal to the masses) I wouldn't call a hip hop or R&B song that tops the charts a pop song. I'm not good with films but I would call Twilight a film "of pop music". A lot of people criticize it. I'm seeing this in the handful of comments I read; it seems the 90's were loved a lot because musicians were actually working, there was little social media/technology around. (While we're on the subject I reckon we're abbreviating terms too much)

I love your comment. I can validate your point by saying Alanis was played at my childhood buddy's funeral at 29 years of age in 2019. I remember being 4 when jagged little pill came out and that album was seriously a soundtrack to our childhoods. The boys didn't care that she was female, because the music was too awesome for us to care (and that is almost impossible to achieve lol). It felt like everyone around me was taking in the alanis vibes and all these years later to have her be the soundtrack to my friends funeral was so beautiful and cathartic. She is truly a legend and a force. I haven't experienced an era of music that made as big of an impact as Alanis did. And it wasn't just for me, it was a unanimous feeling among everyone. Words of truth. I remember vividly my dad and all of his heavy metal rocker friends uncharacteristically liking her and couldn't help it. Truly a phenomenon. Every time she comes up in a conversation I'm still in awe of how people regard her.

@@phoenixnoire2435 It was 5 songs off of that album that were Mainstream Top 40 hits in the U.S. She also hit top 40 in multiple other countries with those songs.

Jagged Little Pill is one of a handful of albums that I know well. I played the whole album more times than I could guess. I would recognize any of the songs in seconds.

Or whoever wrote her string of hits in the 90s. Probably whoever wrote for Lisa Stansfield until she lost her ver brief popularity, cuz it sounds identical.

She is one of the epitome of the 90s sound. Used to hear her on the radio all the time when I was at the local pool. So many memories.

I just heard this on the radio. This song is so relevant even today, a timeless message. I’m having a big “learning” experience this year. Been through some life changing things and this song is comforting.

She sold more records than any rookie female singer, besting my girl Whitney. Alannis is fantastic.
