No, “female albums” is a better representation; the distinction is important because there were fewer female voices, (music was/is a male dominated field) and Alanis was one of the strongest, most unique, calm, angry, and humorous voices out there giving voice to silenced girls and women in a way that had never been allowed in mainstream media before and some would even say since too. She laid bare emotions and thoughts with such honesty and fury without objectifying women while fully acknowledging the objectification of women on the daily. Her music gets better with time and as we age we find even more wisdom in her lyrics.

What people don't often talk enough about this song/album is how it was more of a supergroup than anything. Alanis as a new artist on vocals, Taylor Hawkins(Foo Fighters) as a relatively new drummer, Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers fame, on bass, and Dave Navarro of Jane's Addiction and other projects fame. Not to mention co-written and produced by Glen Ballard who has worked with a TON of artists all done on a Madonna based record label.

The best part of Alanis Morissette is that this is the song that almost everyone hears first (Especially if you first heard her back in '95), and it cements her in everyone's mind as this angsty, hardcore, stone cold Alt Rock singer, then 95% of her songs are her melodiously reciting poems about the vulnerability of spirituality or some borderline hippie stuff. No slight to her, her music is great. Can't think of a bigger musical influence for me in the 90's. But the image she got with this song is hilarious when, even on the rest of this album, you can just listen to, "Mary Jane" "Perfect" or "Hand In My Pocket and see that she is WAY more chill then this song would make you think.

This is what RAW is. The breakup was devastating to her, & the lyrics point to how he knew it would be devastating for her, but he left her anyway without a backwards glance to her welfare, so she's letting him know. She tells him 'Here's what happened afterwards; YOU OUGHT TO KNOW." How a relationship ends can really screw a person up more than the mere fact that it's ending or has ended. Most people understand, they can see the relationship has run its course. It's the responsibility for the 1st one to recognize the end has come to help the other person see & accept. Too often the 1st to realize it just dumps the person; sometimes they ramp the other up, so the one leaving gets some sick ego boost that the other is so enamored by them. Alanis was not let down; she was dropped. When you break like that, your filters fail. All your personal private 'business' is made public. So she lets drop all this sexual stuff to make him uncomfortable, to embarrass him. She was hurt, so she tries to hurt him. What makes this a great song is its unrelenting honesty. It's an absolutely honest expression. Gotta respect that.

JAMEL! Your face! These are some SERIOUS teenage (under age) revenge lyrics. Lots of young folk face this sort of ANGST but can‘t find the words Alanis used to explain having our hearts SPILLED out by unworthy jerks! This was one of my many divorce anthems.
@knittingnickel3 жыл бұрын
I was a teenager when this came out, good memories listening to this in the car with my equally angsty cousin and her friend. This was our anthem!! I still love how this song scares the tits off guys, lol.. 🤣 Love you, Alanis - scream it for the rest of us, you're such a f**kin badass!! 🤘😎🇨🇦

She’s talking about “Joey Gladstone” (actor/ comedian Dave Coulier) from “Full House”. This album “Jagged Little Pill” has sold over 30 million copies and is one of the biggest selling albums of all time

She's not. Dave was the only one that said that. The closest she ever came to answering the question was "he knows who he is, and he hasn't said a word.."

You must listen to the entire album. Every song is a hit. It was shocking, the intensity of the feminine anger revealed and released. It was also super empowering and not just for women; a 'surprisingly' large amount of men could tap into it as well. Really, really worth your time to hear it all.
@garylee36853 жыл бұрын
When it came out I heard this on the radio. The DJ just said when it ended said " that girl is pissed." Reminds me of the Marianne Faithfull song Why'd Ya Do It, her angry song to Mick Jagger.

This is one of her edgier songs, a lot of her songs are happier / thought full. Highly recommend "Uninvited" it is very unusual, "Thank You" and "Ironic" were big hits.

This album, and specifically this song, gave women a voice they'd been denied for so long... Pure, raw ANGER. It grabbed the industry by the throat and rattled some chains. That's for sure. And it is/was POWER!! The 90s saw a lot of women take control back of and for themselves. It was a transformative era. And as far as I'm concerned, about time. Gave rise to artists like Amy Lee, Lzzy Hale, Lauren Hill, Missy Elliott, Shania Twain, Brittany Spears, Beyonce (Destiny's Child) and a lot of others. She didn't just open the door, she announced her arrival like "Scarface"..."Say hallo to my little friend" and blasted the door to dust.

Jagged Little Pill is a fantastic album. That secret song at the end of it scared me, though. Also, I remember driving somewhere in my small little town when this came out. I was listening to the radio, and they played this without the edit. lol I remember being quite shocked.

Are you sure? The radio edit only silenced the "ck" which leaves very little to the imagination. Either way. But yes the entire album is great.

I cannot overestimate how HUGE Alanis was in the 90s. Think Madonna or Garth Brooks. And try as a hater might, her debut album is masterfully constructed - the songwriting, musicians, production - all doing exactly what was needed, no more or less, to support her artistic expression. Her songs passionately addressed grown folk topics, but she wasn't overtly sexual. I was in high school when this dropped. I wasn't a hater but also wasn't a fan. Truth be told, I envied Alanis. She projected fearlessness, intelligence, and self awareness.

A little later on in her career Alanis releases a song " Thank U" after a soul searching trip to India where she learns to release that anger and be more at peace. It is a great video as well in which she wears a flesh coloured body suit that I interpret as her standing naked, baring her soul and revealing her whole self and all the vulnerabilities that come with it. Amazing...
