Soundcore from Anker is trash. Speaker broke, didn't even honour the USA 1 year legally enforceable warranty. Piece of garbage company never buying them again. Talked to JBL with a problem and right away they offered an exchange.
@benbraceletspurple9108 Жыл бұрын
That size speaker could never do 30 hertz well. You can see it when people force it to (by removing the DSP driver and putting in raw input) Even with excursion set to and inch, you can't physically hear it because passive radiators won't move the air correctly. Ported speakers that size can do 30 htz okay, even a bit deeper, but not much, and that type of bass still has limits and requires unreal power.
@alanrossreviews Жыл бұрын
@@benbraceletspurple9108 passive radiators just mimic the frequency from the woofers and give it more ooomph so not sure what you mean by dont move the air correctly? they work out of phase with the woofers and the air it pushes is external.

One of the best sound reviews on KZbin. I must have watched a bunch of reviews about this speaker and many YTbers are just using their phone mic or camera mic and the worst part is they try to compare the sound side by side. Many don't understand how crucial it is to get a proper mic to be able to record certain frequencies accurately and most importantly to normalize the sound coming out of the device. One device at 40% volume can sound different on another device at the same level volume. I see you put a lot of handwork into this review and bc of that you sir earned a sub from me. I am an audiophile at heart, since i was a child, and I can hear differences in sounds that other cannot. With that said, although I usually prefer a FLAT sound, I believe JBL R&D purposely boosted that 700hz frequency range as this "boom box" is intended to be used outdoors without any walls or surfaces for the sound waves to resonate on or reflected of off. So, I believe they have done this to make this speaker sound much fuller than its predecessor and from the sound from your review, it does! (Using my high-quality headphones to listen). In my opinion, in real world application, I would prefer the sound coming out of the boombox 3 as that 700mhz peak makes the speaker sound much fuller. But I do understand at higher volumes that 700hz peak can start to sound harsh and distorted. Hopefully the equalizer in the app can tame it down a little to get it out of being distorted.
@edwindeleon2 жыл бұрын
I mean I'm still using this dam BOSE sound mini v1 as my portable bt speaker and that thing has lots of distortion causing my brain to do alot of "smoothing' as you call it. I would say the JBL boombox 3 is a def an upgrade to that.

I have a boombox 1 and will definitely be getting a boombox 3 ASAP. Even from your video with arctis 9’s on a flat(curve), the BB3 has considerably stronger highs which I love. The boombox 2 sounds more like my partybox 300 in comparison with strong mids and semi-weak highs with a simple Rock EQ on my iPhone. Boombox 1 is still a great speaker in 2022. For a box of this size, with the components it has, it is a shame they don't give it a larger battery, and use that extra capacity and technology to (actually) max-out the subwoofer performance of the device. They have the opportunity to create a game-changing boombox, and have totally missed the mark. Again. Great technical, and thorough review (as always) - Alan !!

And where would you put the cone? If you had ever dissassembled one, you'd know that the "subwoofer" 's cone is almost milimetres perfectly fit into the box. There is only so much you can do with given space. What do you think, why did they experiment putting the tweeters onto the mid drivers? There is a reason why audio cant develop the way other electronical components do, and im pretty sure 10 years from now we wont be much further too in this specific area. Its a quite substential upgrade from the boombox 2 sound qualitywise. Again, if you heard them in real life next to each other, youd know. Obviously it wont come through a youtube video for obvious reasons (unless the mic he is using is spot on, as well as you have a perfectly flat device), then maybe you'd have a guess

I have to give credit here to JBL. The SBC codec is the lowest or default codec for most Bluetooth gadgets but after listening to the Charge 5 and the Partybox 710 it was pretty difficult to fault the clarity and bass. As you may know Alan, it does not just boil down to the codec used but the implementation of the rest of the board the chip is built into, this will make or break any Bluetooth codec hence my appraisal here of JBL as from what I can hear from just an SBC codec, it is very impressive. There is no way on earth we would have got that sound quality from an SBC codec 5 years ago. Admittedly I would prefer to have AAC especially on the 710, but at least for now it's fine and it is hard to find a bad review about that speaker.

@@alanrossreviews Yeah, that one does seem a little pricey for me too. The 710 was a push for me but glad to have it for a few reasons. It doesn’t need pairing for most of my uses for it. It supersedes a pair of 110s for only £50 more and even a pair of 310s for £250-£350 less! No batteries, which some might say is a drawback but then it’s not something that I have to worry about in 2 years time either. 😀

If I was forced to only have one, it would be a toss up. But if I was to have a TSB and $250, I take that all day long over the JBL BB2. This BB3 is disappointing with all the hype and it does actually look like they tried to make something different (different components, etc.) Too bad it didn't translate into anything other than a 700hz peak. The "subwoofer" didn't achieve anything.

@@alanrossreviews I did get the info I needed, but I am actually curious about the physics behind that 700Hz peak. I don’t think it’s something that can be cleared by EQ, also I’m interested to know whether it is caused by the core design itself or the manufacturing process, or just the crossover tuning. Because if the design itself is flawed no matter what model we get there will still be that peak but at different hz range, let’s say like 500hz or 1000hz, which will still be nasty. The marketing team and execution aside I think JBL did a good job of atleast recognizing the benefits and attempting a 3-way design, IMO. Only the Marshall Tufton was the only major 3-way product to my knowledge in the portable Bluetooth speaker space.
@dr.python2 жыл бұрын
@@alanrossreviews I suspect every JBL product is made by different teams at this point. The mid range drivers are the same size as Xtreme 3 woofers, and atleast on paper adequately powered, yet still it seems they’re horribly tuned as on Xtreme 3 the bass extension is till 55Hz but on the boombox 3 even 10x of that frequency is handled by the “subwoofer” In an ideal world I would love to see the mid range drivers to atleast extend to 80 hz and the subs exclusively produce below 80hz.

Also another major issue with the bb3 at max vol. is that the bass kick goes along with the bassline. eg, for a 80hz bassline, the kick will be concentrated at 80hz, and if the bassline changes to 50hz, the kick will shift to 50hz, and the 80hz part will get muted. So in a track with similar kicks, each kick will sound different depending on the bassline it's on.

Interesting fact about jbl, you can actually connect 2 different models in stereo, tested by me, but not discovered by me. I own a boombox 2 , an xtreme 3 and a charge 5. So, if you want to connect the xtreme 3 with the charge 5 in stereo, or any other partyboost models, you need to go into Bluetooth and unpair the charge 5. Turn on the xtreme 3, go into the jbl app, set it in stereo mode, turn on the charge 5 ( without pairing it with the phone) and push the partyboost button on the charge 5. After it makes the connected sound, minimize the app as fast as possible and they will stay in stereo. If it doesn't work, try more.times, it doesn't always work. Also, if you Google stereo mode for jbl different models you will find instructions from other people on how to do it, because I know that I don't always explain well. I would also like to mention that for me, every time there was another jbl partyboos speaker on, eventhough it was not connected, the speakers I would try to connect would go into stereo for a few seconds, but would not stay in stereo, no matter how many times I tried. I actually had an xtreme 3 and bought a charge 5 for stereo, because I read that different models are stereo compatible, and I thought this was normal, just to find out that this is actually a bug. Also I would like to note that I did not try the stereo thingy with the boombox so I can't guarantee that it will.work. but it does work between xtreme 3 and charge 5, and I read it also works with flip.
@alanrossreviews2 жыл бұрын
having different model speakers play left right is not how stereo works. you wont get the correct imaging from mismatched drivers.
@bakreson2 жыл бұрын
@@alanrossreviews please just give it a try, I tested them using stereo KZbin video test and bohemian rhapsody. It sounds stereo. When the video indicates the left source the sound is coming from.a speaker, and when the video indicates right source it's coming from the other. It's not mismatched. It's a jbl bug which allows them to play stereo. I clearly don't have your expertise, and I won't even pretend to know more than you do. But give it a try, preferably with the boombox 2 and xtreme 3.

Seems JBL is following in their grand tradition of giving us less and charging more for it. But, wait, we now have a GIANT JBL logo, a detachable metal handle (with grip) that doesn't feel like metal, and a 'subwoofer' that essentially functions as a woofer. 😂 It reminds me of trips to the grocery store where the "new and improved" packaging is suspiciously smaller than the older packaging yet the price increases significantly. I'm sure most KZbinrs will be hailing it as JBL's best yet. It's only due to your detailed research and testing that the flaws in this supposed 'upgrade' become more apparent. I state all this with the understanding that many will love it and even consider it superior to the previous model but it chaffs me that they seem to be trying to pass off the battery in the Boombox 3 as the same as the one in the 2 when it is, in reality, different (and smaller 😑). I'm sure JBL does invite everyone to look at their specs since they're the only ones that can make sense of the large majority. Unit variation is one thing but JBL adds additional confusion to the mix with their alternative versions of the same model built with completely different components. I'll end my rant now but, all things considered, I think most would be better off with the Boombox 2 or the Stormbox Blast based on your findings. Thank you 🙏 for another exquisite Alan Ross Review! 😁👍👏

Crystal clear all the way to max too. Absolutely love it. Only bad thing is it is noticeably heavier than my BB1. It is as loud as my partybox 300 also. I don’t really hear a real world max volume difference between the 2 in the yard except BB3 has a much cleaner sound. If anything, the BB3 may get very slightly louder.
