@B Pope the "legal drinking age" is a completely arbitrary rule. Some countries allow 16 year olds to drink. Thats not the problem. It's easy to manipulate someone to do more extreme requests when they're drunk. They preyed upon his inebriation and his desire to be accepted.
@Casey_S3 жыл бұрын
@B Pope I'm talking about other countries genius...🤦🏽♂️ Like the Netherlands, or Italy. Where the drinking age is 16. And it's COMPLETELY arbitrary! lt wasn't even federal law until 1984. States were forced to adopt the policy, or loose 10% of their funding. And it's way easier to be peer pressured to do things you wouldn't normally do when you're drunk. Could he have made better decisions? Sure, but once he's no longer in control of his body, his peers have a responsibility to ensure his safety. Blaming an individual does nothing to alleviate the overall predatory nature of frat culture in universities.
@Casey_S3 жыл бұрын
@B Pope First off, calf down with the OOOOOVER EXXXXXTENDING OOOOF WOOOOORDS. And you're exactly right, he was trying to be a part of of something. He wanted to be accepted. So of course he's going to be way more susceptible to pressure, and doing questionable things. Couple that with intoxication, you're not even in full control of your body at that point. Should he have made different choices? Absolutely. But that doesn't make everyone involved free of responsibility. And you know what? You're absolutely right! He was drinking illegally underage. Which means they were supplying an underage person with alcohol. Meaning they have cosiquences to face. My entire point though, that this death was unecessary and avoidable. If hazing wasn't part of the process.

They control the money in the world, and the highest positions in the land. Boy and Girl Scouts are the first rung of training. The Greeks system, is the second, and first very serious training/initiation into this world. Joining the Masons is the third. I went to college in NY and I was pressured into drinking too much, no one took me to the hospital but the guy who pressured me to drink felt so bad that he carried me to my roommates bathroom and sat with me to make sure I was okay, he laid down a towel on the floor so I could rest my head on something and he made sure I stayed on my side, I remember him making me drink water and I remember him putting a cold washcloth on my face. The way your kids behave is definitely how you raise them, I don’t blame him for getting me to drink so much because I agreed to do it. I’m actually still very good friends with him, he’s probably the only thing that kept me alive that night because he took responsibility for his own actions before it was too late, and decided instead of partying he was going to make sure the person he got drunk was going to be okay. Moral of the story: don’t pressure people to drink, but also don’t let people pressure you. It’s okay to say no, it’s okay to be sober

That's precisely the allure of fraternities, or clubs of any sort: there's a sacrifice to be made. That way, membership becomes something special. If there are no requirements, then membership is no big deal. Hazing is a rite of passage, and as humans we are suckers for such things. Whether it's the first crossing of the Equator, Mensur fencing, circumcision etc. - all of which are very unpleasant, but more to the point they are unpleasant by design. When I was in my early 20's, my best mate and I went to a party. I got talking to a girl, he started playing drinking games in another room. He got very drunk, very quickly. I hadn't seen him in maybe an hour, so I went looking for him. He was face down next to the table where everyone was still playing drinking games - completely ignoring him. I turned him over to find him with a bleeding head and foaming at the mouth. No one seemed to give af. I snapped into sobriety in a matter of seconds and called an ambulance. I carried him downstairs with the help of one other friend and went to the hospital in the ambulance with him then sat in the waiting room for 8 hours, calling his mother to tell her what had happened. Thankfully he made a full recovery and was discharged a day later. I did all that because I knew he'd do the same for me. But I would have done it for anyone. I’ve lived up in College Township for about 6 years now. I remembered when this happened and it was just like another “here we go again situation”. There are so many other stories like this or ones involving excessive intoxication where and individual(s) gets hurt. I work where the main fraternities and student apartments meet. Wether it’s a football weekend or just a busy Saturday night there is always that feeling like something like this is gonna happen. It’s tiring to have your town in the news for something negative. Especially when there hasn’t very little to anything done to prevent fraternities from partying. It’s sad to see it. There needs to be more attention to not only this, but how events like these can be prevented. Banning a fraternity from throwing parties isn’t going to stop anything.

What's this bullshit about banning drinking on college campuses? The prohibition of alcohol from younger people has caused a culture of binge drinking. Of course we shouldn't let minors down glasses of whiskey. But pushing to ban alcohol is not gonna solve anything. Take some personal responsibility for things. It's tragic that these people's child died, but don't blame the bottle, for every kid who decides to go overboard, there are thousands enjoying beers with others. Stop legislating, and start educating, not abstinence ( news flash! Kids will always want to get fucked up) but what do when something like this happens. stop making kids afraid to call the police if something like this happens.
