I have been following you for a few years now and I love your videos. They are very descriptive and have great info for a beginner rider. I see you have been preparing for the trip for months and this seems like an overkill to me. When I first saw the panniers and bags, I thought you were going to take too much stuff but now that I saw this video, I don't think you are overpacking. It looks like all that planning is paying off...

Great video & channel, Craig! N00b questions: Which mattress and tent are you using? Would also be interested in knowing what you wear for gear during regular summer daytime riding -- particularly gloves and pants. Thank you!
@LivingOffTheSlab7 жыл бұрын
+Galen Sinkey, Thanks! I just got a new mattress, a Sea to Summit, Comfort Plus. It can be set with different firmness on each side. For a tent I am using a Sierra Designs Flash 2 FL. I did a video on the tent of you want to take a look. If I am on short rides, I will wear my Diamond Gusset Defended Jean's (Kevlar lined). Then either my Klim jacket or my Tourmaster mesh jacket. I generally wear good base layers under the jacket and pants. For gloves, I use a light weight, but quality full finger leather glove. Right now I am using the Klim Dakar Pro glove.

I removed the pillion and replaced it with the Alt-Rider luggage platform. Here is a video I did on them kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHvCe5WHiZdniq8 If you go to my gear page, I have links to Amazon where you can get them, or you can go directly to Alt-Rider. www.livingofftheslab.com/gear.html#packing You will also need the Roto Pack mounts which are also in the gear section of my website. Or you can get them at Twisted Throttle, and most likley Amazon as well. They bolt directly to the Alt-Rider rack. Thanks for watching and have a great 2018!

Quick question, do you have any experience with a product called Magic Tank? Supposed to be a non-combustible fuel alternative that can be stored indefinitely for emergency use. I just bought a 2017 Indian Scout and will be touring the US soon but with a 3.3 gallon tank I'd like to have some insurance. It would it be perfectly safe to just carry gasoline?
@LivingOffTheSlab7 жыл бұрын
Hello Heather, I do not have any experience with Magic Tank, however I did look at it and personally, I would not put anything in my tank other than what the manufacturer recommends (91 and above octane E10, or non ethanol gasoline). In the cases where I cannot get at least 90 octane fuel I add an octane booster. I use the one from BelRay. There is no danger of carrying extra fuel as long as you use an approved fuel container. You already do that in your tank. Just be smart and do not light an open flame near the extra container. Here in the U.S. you are not going to have many places were you will be in danger of not finding fuel. Typically we stop every 100 miles for a rest and usually just top off your fuel at that time. That way we are generally never under 1/2 tank. On the Alaska trip, I did carry an auxiliary container, but only filled it up for this limited times when we expected the distances between gas stations to be over 150 miles (that would be less for your tank). I did run out of gas once, but that was the one time that I tried to push my tank past 200 miles. If I would have stuck to my rule of filling up every time we stopped, I would have been fine. Let me know if you have any other questions. Belray Fuel Additive: www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/bel-ray-all-in-one-fuel-treatment Giant Loop Fuel Bladder (this is expensive, but will not take up space when empty and has loops for tie down): www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/giant-loop-fuel-safe-bladder Roto Pack Fuel Container (this would require the included mount to be attached to a rack of some kind, or you could just strap down the container): www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/rotopax-one-gallon-pack-with-standard-mount-set
