Great job. My mom in our out house poured down the hole liquid lye now & then, I remember it was in a dark bottle there was no more stink,😂 dad put the hole when building the outhouse deep, we threw toilet paper down it & it didn't fill up for years. When it was almost full dad would dig another hole and pull the out house over the hole & took the dirt from the new hole to fill up the old hole. 😊

As you’ll be able to tell from my only outhouse complaint, I’m a city girl living vicariously through generous people like you. The one and only time I ever had to use an outhouse was when I was 6 years old and my father sent me off for summer vacation with some friends of his who rented a cabin every year in the Thousand Islands. It had an old outhouse that dark and smelly, both things I could deal with, but also spider infested which was where I drew the line. I hated it and telling me they wouldn’t bother me if I didn’t bother them was no help at all, lol.😊

Yep, we had lots of Daddy Longlegs spiders and garter snakes. The Daddys would cling to the inside of the door and the gater snakes would lay on the cool concrete slab outside the door.

Maureen, I have a fear of spiders. At 8 years old, we went to camp. My brothers told me there were black widows in the outhouse! Probably were!!! Now at almost 76 I still fear outhouses! But now, any port in the storm!

I'd put a bucket instead of the pit and then haul the bucket off once a week or so. Could make it easy - build a Roman siege catapult, empty the toilet bucket into the catapult bucket and... fire!

Fun fact. When I was a kid my Grandma only had an outhouse. No indoor plumbing except running water in the kitchen. She had a well house that had a propane stove. It had all the well plumbing and it was set up for washing clothes and bathing. She had a large metal tub and she filled it halfway with cold well water. She had 4 big kettles she put on the stove. Then she'd add the boiling water to the tub. You hopped in and washed fast. In the summer the tub was set outside in the grass and you bathed in the yard. The house/driveway was a long way off the road. 😆 We had a lot of naked people running around. The well house was about 30 yards from the house with trees and bushes in the way so, it was kids bath time, men's bath time and ladies bath time. We never washed our hair in the well house. In summer we washed our hair in the yard with rainwater, in the winter we washed our hair in the kitchen sink with rain water we brought inside in buckets. Grandma had a catchment system. Rainwater makes your hair very soft. Ok fun fact. All my grandma's outhouses were double holes. It had a bench seat with 2 holes that had toilet seat covers. Why? They had a lot of rock in the ground and to dig a hole you had to have heavy equipment come in, so it cost some money. A 2 holer was not much more than a single hole so they dug for a 2 holes and made a bench seat with 2 toilets in it. They were spaced a bit apart. The reason. To fill the hole better! If you had one hole it would fill but leave space on the sides. So what they did was for 6 months they used one side. then moved to the other hole for 6 months. This allowed the contents to evenly spread in the hole. It took a long time to fill that hole! It had a concrete slab in front and a nice view of the garden and was shaded by trees. In summer we always left the door open while in use to stay cool. No one could see you in there due to strategic placed bushes. Occasionally you'd visited by a Daddy Longlegs or a garter snake. 😂

DOUBLE HOLES?! Well, I got you beat! Ours had quad holes. Two at adult hight and two lowered for children. Fortunately I'm not aware of any time that more than one was in use at a time, though. I've never been afraid of using an outhouse and your builds are beautiful. When we rustic camp, we have a plywood board with a toilet seat attached to it, that we bring with us, and set it up over a deep hole with two logs holding it up. We throw the dug-up sand/dirt over the "deposits" after use. Any paper used goes right into the fire pit.

I've lived with outhouses in a number of places, mostly in Alaska. We did put wood ashes in the holes, and we used foam on the seat (a foam seat is fine to sit on even when it's way below zero, though sometimes we took it in the house between uses). The most odor-free outhouse I've ever used was a government-built one (can't remember if it was in a national forest, or at a rest area along a highway) that had a 12" diameter vent pipe going from inside the pit through the outhouse and up through the roof. The vent pipe carried odors outdoors, so they didn't stink the inside up. There was no fan on it, so it didn't need electricity.

I've got mostly clay here in the middle of the Mitt, so it's harder to dig (but less likely to cave in:) For fellow Michiganders who may not know, these are legal at a minimum depth of four feet but not deeper than six feet. In the middle east, a "deluxe" outhouse alway had a 50# bag of quicklime in it. You scatter in a scoop of it after each use, and it breaks down, liquifies, and sterilizes. So there's less build, odor or bugs.

Great job on your outhouses ,at Home Depot you can find septic treatment add a little water to the hole so the bacteria can work and they will never be filled ,works like a charm and tames the smell ,I think !

For a smell protective material, consider pine bedding pellets from an animal feed store or a place like BiMart or Coastal Farms. Coastal sells Nature's Bedding pellets for under $7/40lbs! BiMart sells a smaller version priced close to the value of the Coastal bag (owned by same company). I swear by this for cat litter - moisture expands the pellets. Number two gets dried up by the pellets. This is also compostable material (think 'humanure' aspect).

My uncle built us a potty in the 70s in Idaho when we went comping. He dug a deep hole. Then nailed some smaller tree branches together with no hole in the bottom. Then we would sit and go potty. Cover it up with dirt each time we used it. Not the toilet paper.

Might you have a set of hole diggers? I inherited my father's and they come in so handy. You could even add an extender to the handles for narrow deep holes such as yours. Thanks for the video. Nice outhouses! My sister had to use one when she lived on the Betsie River in a fishing cabin. She kept a candle in hers with matches. It was cold in the winter! My Grandma had one up in Newaygo outside their cabin. As a kid, I remember being afraid I would fall in. It was nothing like yours.

I had to dig the pit for my family's outhouse (a two-seater) when I was a kid. The hole was six feet deep and the next morning it was full of frogs. I jumped down and threw out every one i could find. Next day it had more. My old man told me to forget it and he and my uncle put the seats down and the walls up. Thirty years later it's still standing - with the occasional rat snake in the ceiling to keep you company.

I have used the outhouses but probably will never have an occasion to build one. Glad to know that it is not difficult. Your model looks pleasant which is the idea in addition to being functional. I have refused to use a really bad outhouse in my past when traveling so yes, clean, safe and pleasant is the key to motivating people to use an outhouse when no indoor plumbing is available.

That was inspirational! So nice to see an independent woman building an outhouse! Love it. I would use a cush toilet seat versus the foam. Easier to keep clean and hygienic. Water proof everything. If the latch outside gets loose, it can drop and lock you in. I would rethink that one. Great going girlfriend! ❤

Hey Girl in the woods, I wood suggest a 4 inch PVC pipe, verticle in the corner. Have removable straps. Whe your are ready lift the pipe up and tow your house to a new location. Positive air flow creats arobic action and reduces odor.

I still have memories of my grandparents outdoor bathroom of sorts. A wooden wall partition off the corn crib,a post digger dug hole and a view of the horse pasture. In the sixties they finally had an indoor bathroom addition built to the house which was my great grandfather's home before 1900. Grandma didn't have to brave the cold of winter to use the bathroom anymore.
