In addition to the generator, if you look up Solar Generators. Such as a Goal Zero Yeti, they come in different sizes. Basically it's a big battery that you can run appliances on. Something like a fridge or freezer. If you lose power for an extended time, you can use solar panels or your gas generator to run appliances in the day and charge your Solar Generator and then run appliances off the Solar Generator at night. You would need to look into the wattage requirements. But, it is a cheaper option than buying a whole house generator and the fuel necessary to run it.

We have a whole house generator that my husband felt was a must-have. Early on living in our neighborhood, the power went out often for what seemed like no reason and he was tired of it. The funny thing about the generator is since we have had it we only have used it a handful of times.

I remember in the early 90s we had a 4 day outage here in the valley. Young, two littles at home, we melted snow and bundled up. We didn’t have a wood stove back then either. Small home at the time. But my Jack if all trades hubby, kept us warm, he had all the emergency things to survive an Alaskan outage in the middle of winter! Funny how FBX and North Pole don’t get huge amounts! Boy we do! That’s why we have a full plow, always had for 30 years. And he plows everyone out. Good men.

I remember as a girl my maternal grandparents didn't have hot water in their house yet and this was the late 1970s, they didn't get it until the early '80's. My grandma raised 6 kids with no hot water, so bath and dish water was warmed on the stove top. So, if our power went out and we had to run our generator (it's similar to yours) we wouldn't have to hook up the hot water heater. There are ways to get hot water without the hot water heater. :) Take care!

If you refinance your house, save that extra money and use it to buy a whole house generator. My mom was out of power for over 2 wks due to a bad ice storm. But for now fill 5 gallon buckets with water so that you can flush toilets. We are also on a well and gave a regular gas generator (bigger than yours that we can hook up to the main power line after turning off the master breaker if needed). We will use as few lights as possible and will hook up the freezer for an hour or so and then the fridge. You can also cook on your gas grill. If it's really cold you can take stuff out of the fridge and put them in ice chests filled with snow.

A good emergency car kit for alaska includes: Flares, an extra blanket. Always bring good warm boots and snowsuits kept in the car just in case of a break down at 40 below. Jumper cables. A lighter and pack of matches. Water. Granola bars. Jerky. A knife. Seatbelt cutter should be kept under the front seat. Flashlight. A battery pack and charger for cell phones. A Delorum if your in a poor cell service area. Some areas have no cell service at all and that can be very dangerous in the winter if you break down in a less trafficked area.

Hello from a hurricane-prone area! My Dad wired an 11,000-watt portable generator (dual fuel - gasoline or propane, electric start) to his house. It'll run the lights, fridge, hot water tank, and stove. Basically, everything except the central air conditioning. The well has its own 5500-watt generator. We usually keep non-ethanol gas on hand at all times - it can always go into our cars. Gas lines can be up to 2 miles long here after a storm. Portable battery packs for charging phones is pretty handy. The longest we've lost power is over 3 weeks post-Katrina. Tropical storms can knock out power for about 3 days.

I just bought a Honda 3000is for my parents. Spendy small generator BUT it has an inverter so is good for electronics, has an electric start (good if you are old), and is very fuel efficient. I can remember a big blizzard (probably 10 years ago) where electricity was out for 1-2 weeks even in towns. That meant pumps at fuel stations didn’t run...so people were running out of fuel...so a really fuel efficient generator became a must for me.

We are in SC on a well so we know about that problem. Our power will go out for ice storms and snow and hurricanes so we have some notice. The longest we have been without power was 36 hours. We keep some 5 gallon gas cans full of water in our garage for flushing toilets and usually eight 24 packs of water for drinking and cooking. But, when a storm is coming we fill bath tubs and everything in the garage that can be filled with water such as 5 gallon buckets. We fill those outside on the driveway with the hose. If we have a long term outage we have a small woodstove that we can bring in and run a stove pipe up the chimney but we have never had to use it in the 20 years we have had it.

I still run a generator in winter when the clouds won't give us a break. I have a 2600watt Yamaha now because of the 3 year warranty. My sister ran hers(same generator as mine) for 4 years daily!!! All day everyday. You can buy nice gas pumps now on the internet that transfers the fuel from can to tank without the spillage. They are easy to use and only need a couple of batteries to run it.

It's snowing as we speak in northern Utah, but it probably won't stick until a little later this month. We don't need to do any specific preparations for snow where we live in our rural community, but we try to be quick on plowing and shoveling afterwards so no one slips. The roads get sketchy and people don't drive carefully. That's the worst part of winter.

Watching y'all slogging through all that snow, and I had to go check our current temps here in Houston, Texas. 70 degrees at 10pm. Tomorrow's high is 82. And there you are, hip deep in snow. Oh, and gulf coast folk know generators are key to surviving hurricane season. Just had subdepression Theta form in the Atlantic, so we're not in the clear yet. We have a window a/c for one of our rooms. Gennie is good enough to power everything except the central a/c, but relief from the heat is critical here. We were 3 weeks without power after hurricane Harvey, 2 weeks without after Rita, and even lost power for 3 days after tropical storm Imelda last year. Gotta be ready for the long haul.

❄️❄️❄️⛄️I love when the snow is just like white powdered sugar. It is just beautiful. Sorry for all your plowing headaches! ⛄️❄️❄️❄️ PS: I know Bert’s next project: A three car garage! LOL!!! PPS: The moose need to earn their keep: they need to start running the snow blower over night & clear the drive way! Double LOL!!!

The aerial flyover of your property at the beginning was absolutely breathtaking. Driving the plough looks fun. Take care. Hope your power doesn’t go out again.

Love your channel and it’s not often in England we get snowed in but years ago when I wasn’t living in London we used to get snowed in and I found with having a young family at the time a camping cooking stove was brilliant as even when the power went down I could still cook hot meals and boil water for hot water bottles. Love your home and your channel 🌸

There’s a solar generated you can get from 4 Patriots power generator you can run in the house safely. It’s less than $4000

I live in Albuquerque, NM and 2 week ago we got 10 1/2 inches of snow. We do not normally get that much for the whole winter. It was nice to have snow for once.

Hello SmersinAlaska family. I dont know exactly how much snow fall you received in total but we just got the same system that dumped all that snow you just got here in Edmonton and by the time it's done, we will have received about a foot of snow. love your vlog stay warm, keep safe, and be happy. Down here in New Orleans area, we just lost power for 3 days from a hurricane, we have been out for a week before. We have a pretty strong generator we use to power our fridge, a lamp, tv, dvd player, and a fan.

A Winter Wonderland of snow! I laughed when I saw Bert ( Rudolph) pulling the "Sled" around the yard to make a track for it to run on! I feel bad for all of the snowplowing that has started already for you tho!
