Glad to hear it, I'm a fan of D&D but somewhat I never thought about using my music in the background, going to have to try that now!

My favorite thing about this video is the fact that even though it's essentially 45 minutes of a few machines just being themselves, it never gets boring. I love generative patches and I love what you've done here.
@AlastairWilsonMusic7 жыл бұрын
I find self-generating patches really good background music, I love them. It only works for me if the notes are quantised to a scale though, I can't stand S&H sent straight to the V/Oct control.
@seemikehack7 жыл бұрын
I concur about scale quantization: atonal music has never really been my thing. I have a lot more control over that because my weapon of choice (or necessity, I suppose) right now is PureData. Someday I'll go analog, though!
@AlastairWilsonMusic7 жыл бұрын
I can't say I dislike atonal music when it's done in the context of drones or effects (essentially when notes are thrown out of the window altogether) - it's only when people use the 12-tone octave without choosing a scale that it grates on my ears! How come PD is a necessity for you? I've never seen any reason to use it, although possibly because I don't know much about it.
@seemikehack7 жыл бұрын
A financial necessity, so to speak. Analog modular synthesis is rather low on the budget priority list as of now, even for a seasoned DIYer like myself; PD is just the way I scratch the itch for now.

If I had a 3rd M32 I would have made a video about it! It would be definitely stereo, more chordal, etc etc...
I've just now realised what this piece of music reminds me of, not just the music, but the atmosphere and colour you used on the shot too. Are you a H.P.Lovecraft fan by any chance? - 'Through the desolate summits swept raging intermittent gusts of the terrible antarctic wind; whose cadences sometimes held vague suggestions of a wild and half-sentient musical piping, with notes extending over a wide range, and which for some subconscious mnemonic reason seemed to me disquieting and even dimly terrible.' from H.P.Lovecraft's 'At The Mountains Of Madness'. It's my favourite story by him, and this is how I always imagine the strange, eerie musical piping they often refer to!
@AlastairWilsonMusic7 жыл бұрын
As it happens, I'm not a fan of Lovecraft enough that I've properly read any of his stories other The Call of Cthulhu, but I know vaguely of many of them through their inspiration on other peoples' work. However, I am (and particularly was when I was younger, but Lovecraft is a bit heavy for a 13 year old) a big fan of supernatural tales, particularly in a horror context; I love horror games and films, especially when the supernatural is involved. I actually named 004//The Seething Depths from the lighting and mass of cables, which reminded me of the Kraken. Your comment is a good kick up the backside for me to read more Lovecraftian horror!

@AlastairWilsonMusic5 жыл бұрын
I seriously love the sound of the Ventris, and the Big Sky is great for 'clean' ambience (a bit generic nowadays in my opinion), but I heard a piano demo using the blackhole algorithm from the Space and I was sold. They all have very different characteristics, so I recommend trying them all out in a shop if you can. The Space is great for dark ambient stuff but I've used it in non-ambient non-modular tracks too and enjoyed it - if you don't do much dark ambient stuff then the Ventris might be more up your street.

Adam, if you can get your hands on a "Sony ICD-BX800" digital recorder you can copy right into it from youtube using nothing more than an external 1/8" to 1/8" stereo phono cable. You can also try the Sony ICD-BX132, or the ICD-BX140, or any other company of this type of digital recorder. You can try Walmart or Staples first, but who knows how many different companies actually stock these things today.

@girlinagale7 жыл бұрын
Listening again, this really is an influential patch for me, sounds like a £10,000 Eurorack rig. When you describe Cminor triad is that sequenced in both Mother's? I shall enjoy putting my own triad in the sequencers, maybe something to suit the trumpet (Bb). My clock source currently is a Boss RC 505 but the lowest bpm is 40, I don't think this is a problem as there are clock dividers on the Mother 32 and I may find another device to clock the Mothers at 20bpm, but 40bpm is pretty slow and it will end up my own interpretation of your patch. \i'm obssessed with this video, it's cost me £40 in new patch leads but I'm lit-up by it, thank you.
@AlastairWilsonMusic7 жыл бұрын
I'm glad this patch is so inspiring to you! I made a different sequence for each M32, both mainly C, Eb and G. 40 bpm will probably make this patch seem oddly fast or quite dense in notes if you keep the reverb decay long, but it might be interesting to use shorter envelope times and see where 40bpm takes you...

Hi Alastair. I keep returning to this beautiful track. Wonder if you could indulge me. Recording and video. What did you use to capture the crisp and clean image? Great lighting by the way. I am struggling with a Logitech C920 on a Mac which is supposed to be good but I just get fuzzy. How did you record sound?
@AlastairWilsonMusic6 жыл бұрын
The camera I use is my iPhone 6S camera. it's not great in the dark, so the video is actually quite fuzzy and lo-fi (look at the Make Noise logo at the bottom of Maths, for example). I found it works well for this type of music. The lights are a multicoloured LED strip (you can get them cheap off Amazon) which are draped over the top of the modular and held up by a mic stand offscreen. I put black paper over everything reflective in the background to keep it dark. For the audio, I'm recording into Ableton. It would be better to record to a camera, since the audio and video go out of sync after a few minutes with my method, but I count on the fact that no-one is actually looking at the video for longer than that! Does that help?
@InvertedPopesMusic6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alastair. Yes indeed that does help and many thanks. iPhone eh? Have to say it looks great when compared to the output of my Logitech C920 which is supposed to be HD 1080p! Thanks again and do keep the music and the patches coming.

I can't comment on your C920 but I imagine webcams aren't as good as normal cameras for this type of thing. A cheap camera will probably do you some good. Patches are flowing out of my ears at the moment, don't worry ;)

hello sir. i admire your mother32 works A LOT. Im currently looking forward to enter mysterious modular world. Would you recommend mother 32? would i achieve enough sub bass from it? warm full sound? Or should i maybe go with lifeforms sv-1?
@AlastairWilsonMusic6 жыл бұрын
Firstly, I'm glad you enjoy my work! Secondly, what you should start out with depends on where you want to go with modular. Do you want a flexible monosynth? An ambient soundscape generator? A techno/noise machine? The sound of different synths and modules are also very subjective - I personally love the sound of a Moog, so the M32 was what I went with. If you like the sound of the SV-1 and don't need a sequencer, then the SV-1 might be better for you, etc. You can get plenty of bass out of the M32 for sure, but bear in mind it's only got 1 oscillator. If you want a bass with a sub bass an octave below or something, you'll need to buy more modules to get that from the M32. As far as a 'warm full sound', I recommend listening to it in a shop to decide for yourself how warm and full it is. Personally, putting PWM on the square wave on my M32, mixing it with the AJH oscillator, and low pass filtering it slightly gives me all the warmth and fullness I want from a classic synth bass, but that's just my opinion :)
@eryko23386 жыл бұрын
@@AlastairWilsonMusic thank you for your response! indeed your "work" is a good word. it's like watching a fine mixed-art piece. Well in your setup i like the warmness for sure. What module would you recommend to achieve more subbass in the low end?
@AlastairWilsonMusic6 жыл бұрын
The 'warmness' in my pieces I believe comes largely from my use of filtering most oscillators to remove a lot of the high frequencies and from using reverbs that compliment this. A touch of low pass filtering will probably 'warm up' any sounds you want warmed! I can't really comment on subbass modules as I don't have any specifically for that purpose; I'd say look at oscillators that have a triangle core (rather than a saw core), as they often have sine wave outputs, and use that or a triangle wave output an octave below your main bass to give it a load more sub.
