Simply stunning Bryan. I teach an Undergraduate course on modular synthesis and unlocking creativity through their usage. I've played the students a number of your tracks over the course of the unit and they always go down well. I will be sure to play this! Keep up the brilliant work.

I'm 62 - originally a Pianist from the the age of 6. At 15, I started playing analog synths...mostly Moogs and Arps. At University, I studied modular synthesis on a Buchla, but as time went by - I got lazy...got into the Digital keyboards, with presets, and ways of 'saving' patches. I've been listening to your music over the past week, (while sequestered because of the Covid-19 Pandemic) and I have to say - your Stunning Work has re-Enchanted me! I am now looking at what Modular System to get! - Thank You So Much!

@@Lightbath - Bryan, Thank You for the reply. Was perusing your website (well designed, of course!) and am impressed and intrigued by your commitment to creating a community of forwardly creative humans! I am sharing with you , a piece I created in 2006 - without the use of modular synthesis - just an Acoustic Guitar, a Korg Workstation, Glockenspiel, Mellotron Samples, Effects Boxes, Radio Static, and my own Voice. I hope you will listen, and imagine what I might create with Modular Design. Again - Thank you for doing what you do. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4LGh2mlprmbsNE

I listen to this almost daily. To me it's unique because of the introduction of the muted drumbeats in such an ethereal soundscape. Slightly humorous, too, as at first they reminded me of construction noises (carpenters in the basement), lol. Beguiling track!

Every single one of your tracks I've heard, are at the very least, extremely nice. Some are obviously and instantly wonderful, or great, or whatever. I went back to some of the merely nice tracks and listened to them very closely with my eyes closed or while not listening to them. I went about my business or read as they played. Your work fills the requirements of true ambient music, in my opinion. If you choose to engage with the music, there is a lot going on and the reward is large, but if you let them play in the background they fade away and become part of the scenery. They become as unobtrusive as a mild perfume in the air. That's a reward in itself. Thanks for the good music.

Stunning. Wonderful! I really have no clear understanding of modular Synthesizers but I am sure I want to buy one one day. My question is- can I buy one (prebuilt/parts to build together myself (modules) ) with around 600-1000 $/€ ? Greets
@Lightbath
@Lightbath 5 жыл бұрын
A grand can put together a small system. Remember that the case will cost some money. Something like the TipTop Mantis case will run $300 and then modules will be anywhere from $100 to $500-ish for the more major ones. Check the ModularGrid link in the description for a really useful app for designing a system. And of course if you want some tips check out my top two tiers on Patreon. They’re currently full, but I’m making a change in the next month or so to allow me to open up a few more slots. Wishing you the best ~

Yeah, for real. I'm still not convinced it's right for me, but I do love the filtered & modulated delay I can get from it. My next step might be to set up the 301 to do something similar and see if I don't just prefer that.
@Lightbath
@Lightbath 6 жыл бұрын
Granted, I haven't even scratched the surface of the granular/pitched taps, and the 301 isn't there yet on that sort of thing.

Hi Bryan, been checking out your music for a while now and really enjoying it! I'm really curious how you're attenuating CV etc? I can't see any dedicated attenuverters on some of your set ups, including this one..do you just not attenuate very often? or is attenuation provided via one of the other modules? Now that I think about it, apart from Pamela's, you don't seem to use LFOs much either if I'm not mistaken, so perhaps you don't need to attenuate signals very often? Hope you can shed some light, I'm just getting started in the modular world :)
@Lightbath
@Lightbath 6 жыл бұрын
Great questions! I agree that attenuation is so important to get subtlety. Yeah, LFOs played a much larger role in my patches when Batumi was in the case. Check my old fourhexagons channel for more modulation. But really, a lot of my modules have attenuverters built-in. And my primary modulation source has been Chance lately, which has attenuverters on each output. Aside from that, it was a conscious choice in building this recent performance case to do less with modulation than I had in the past and rely more on performance and real-time hands-on modulation. I have a 12U piece I'll be publishing soon that uses a lot more modulation (even some Batumi into Samara into Drezno/Lipsk complex modulation) and has enough attenuators to even the score. So stay tuned, and if you haven't yet seen some of the old videos like 'Orange is the New', 'Social Contours', and 'Batumi Master' you might dig them. And if you wanna dig through the archives, there's 'Supermoon Preparation' on Vimeo.
@stateazure
@stateazure 6 жыл бұрын
That explains a lot, thanks. I did wonder if Chance had it built in, I'm not familiar with that module. I figured this is what you've done, gone for a more interactive, hands-on approach. I know those videos well! Your 'Batumi Master' video sold me on that module. I've only had my little modular setup for a couple of days now, but I can say Batumi is one of my favourites so far, it's so fun patching into itself and creating wild modulation via the different modes. Thanks again!

Oh, I just realized that you specified 'module'. I'm actually going out of different modules straight into my audio interface. I find there's no need to use separate interface modules since my interface has enough headroom. But if I had a large studio rack I'd totally use one of those nw2s modules or maybe the Snake Charmer because the DB-25 snake cable solution is super elegant.
@Lightbath
@Lightbath 6 жыл бұрын
Just using 3.5mm to 1/4" cables by Control. Straight out of Rainmaker into Channels 1&2 of the interface. Out of Clouds into 3&4. Out of Plonk into 5. The OP-1 is going into my mixer which has send/return to BIM/BAM & Morphagene and the main outs of the mixer are going into Channels 7&8 of the interface.
@plooonk

Oh, wonderful! May I ask, what’s the role of the OP-1 in this? Is it the only active sequencer and how did you connect it to the system?
@Lightbath
@Lightbath 6 жыл бұрын
It’s separate. I’m using the Tombola to play an internal synth and that’s just an extra voice to add to the modular, which is being played by the Monome on the left.
