My mom lived somewhere called sugarfoot Georgia and no delivery or even 911 would come! Called the police the first time someone was killed on her front lawn they told her to stay inside cause ain’t NOBODY coming out there at night. I grew up poor there west/central on Whitney ave in the 70s walked to school magnolia elementary. Don't remember any crime. Zillow says that house was built in the 1940s and worth $30k now. I will say even though Columbus is 3rd largest and Macon and Savannah are 4th and 5th, they feel more "urban"

This is 80% of Albany. Trying to use Double Gate or any gated community as a reason Albany isn’t all bad is ridiculous. Sure, there are some amazing houses. Being owned solely by the rich. Or rented out at $2,500 a month. This is the reality of Albany for the common person. Even public places like Turtle Park are being invaded by aggressive homeless people. Taking up all seating areas. I’ve lived here all my life. Though I don’t live in the “ghetto” in Albany. I did a bunch of construction work and house maintenance in “hoods”. Family’s here are more willing to cook you dinner then wealthy white families. I filled a little girls bike tire with air and within a week she got shot in a drive by shooting. Honestly the city isn’t all that bad, but there aren’t many opportunities, and if you really don’t have a good education the best jobs you’d have are two chicken plant jobs that are about an hour outside of the city in Moultrie and Camilla, Georgia. To say the least, Albany is a town you’ll have to finish high school, or just get on your feet quick and leave. Definitely not a place to grow old in, it’s dull and boring. Some will like it, some won’t.🤷🏿‍♂️

There were places in Albany that if you lived there you were banned from donating blood because of the rate of hepatitis and AIDS was so high. I lived there in mid 2000s and everything east of slappy blvd ran on food stamps and crack. Everyone ate at various churches and the Mission and homeless shelters and Salvation Army and sold thier SSI Check and food stamps for crack. I heard from a female prostitute who was my neighbor that now it's also methamphetamine and all the males are gay now. ALL the males I knew then at least-- and a lot of people I knew were murdered. Wonderful place.
