The Albatros was greatly feared and very good looking, too. It's flying escort for the recon plane here, I'm sure. I want to give the Hansabrandenburg pilot a periscope.

Always enjoyed reading about the Great War aviators. Several years ago I bought a ride in a biplane at Old Rhinebeck aerodrome in New York State. It was everything I hoped for but just too short. The takeoff and landing was spectacular!! I loved this video, thanks!

What is the significance of a six pointed star instead of a balkenkreuz?
@Xlaminator2 ай бұрын
Most likely an emblem of personal relevance to the pilot. The depicted plane was flown by Benno Fiala von Fernbrugg (3rd ranking austrian ace with 28 or 29 victories) , so most likely it´s a symbol in reference to his family or something else from his personal life. Many austrian and german planes in WW1 had these personal symbols on them. After all, many pilot´s families were part of the aristocracy...
@wirralnomad2 ай бұрын
@@Xlaminator Good point thanks, many planes also had a swastika too, both Western Allies and Central Powers alike.

They look like historic versions, not kits, I assume these are restored? The albatross looks so authentic, the color scheme and the star of David on the side makes me think it's designed to look like Wilhelm Frankl's Albatross? I am curious about the nose, it's more rounded than the original DIII's I believe. Was this a mod for engineering reasons? Either way great video, I loved seeing them fly along the Burgen.

I believe the Austro/Hungarians used Austro Daimler engines instead of the German Mercedes
@orictis Жыл бұрын
This is an authentic and accurate replica from an Öffag-built Albatross (Austrian). The big spinner, the german Albatross had, had some Problems, the Austrians wanted to get rid of. Despite every single screw not available nowadays was scratch made to original specs. The engines of both planes, being the same 225 HP Austrodaimler inline-6, are old and original. everything else was made. Even the high-pressure-tyres...

Are they flying with 1918 technology engines or do they have the 2020 shelf engines at a airplane dealer? No matter, old stuff no matter it looks like turns heads, that is what counts first :)

I believe German ww1 two seaters had the guy in the back seat in control of the mission so the pilot followed orders. Maybe that explains the poor forward vision. Mind, that's only guessing.
@orictis3 жыл бұрын
That is right, the rearguy was the one with the higher Rank. But at These days, the cylinderbank of Inline engines always stood upright. Also, cause ww1 planes could hardly bear crosswinds, the flyingfields were quite big and forewardvisibility therefore not that cruscial.
@jwg722 жыл бұрын
The cockpits are also fairly small but open - so the pilot can easily lean out to the left side or the right side. Early on visibility down was as much of a priority as visibility forward. The layout used largely replaces the need for a windscreen while ensuring a degree of streamlining I suppose!
