Unbelievable. A magnificent reproduction and work of art.

Mikael Carlson is an outstandig guy, he has restored two original Blériots from the beginning of the last century, built a Fokker DR.1 triplane only from materials and with tools available at the time. I saw him at the Hahnweide vintage aircraft meeting 2016 and 2019 flying the Blériot very calmly and doing incredibly dynamic dogfight maneouvres in the Fokker. Oh, and of course, as usual, outstanding photography and editing. Thanks!

So he copied all the parts from a museum’s plane. Then builds his own in 2 years! Finds a rare rotary 230hp engine to finish off. Hats off to this guy! 👍🏻

Thans for an excellent video. And having the camera speed adusted so the prop doesn't look like a windmill.

This has to be one of the best videos of any WWI Airplane on youtube. Thank you for sharing it, i can't wait to see more =) Mikael's craftmanship and piloting skills are second to none and no matter what he flies he's always one of the highlights of the show. I hope he brings his Pfalz to the Hahnweide one day.

Never thought I'd ever here the sound of an 11 cylinder radial in my lifetime, as all have been experimental types from war eras and disappeared without a trace. To hear it, it is close to what I expected, almost like a out of kilter V-12, very much like the unique firing order of the RR Griffon. Now somebody find the only R-4090 somewhere in the vaults of an aero museum and bolt to the nearest WWII fighter for my next bucket list audio fantasy!!!!

Was hoping it was actually counter rotating. He says it in the video, but the prop and engine rotate together in same direction.

I'm currently reading the book 'Jasta Colors' by Bruno Schmäling, and see that Jasta 56 flew some Pfalz D.VIII's in combat. The author met with Vzfw. Franz Piechulek of Jasta 56 in the 1970s and has a few photos. It says at one time, Jasta 56 had old Pfalz D.IIIa's, Fokker D.VII's, and Pfalz D.VIII's on service at the same time, making it difficult for the Jasta to fly missions at full strength. Being that the Pfalz D.III was slow, the Fokker D.VII being the fastest in level flight, and the Pfalz D.VIII having the best rate of climb.

Can someone explain how he says it’s counter rotating yet in the video it’s not? The whole point I thought of the iemens-Halske Sh.III engine was to counter the gyroscopic effect of the heavy spinning motor by having the prop spin the opposite direction.
@HobbyLadan2 жыл бұрын
Wow! Vilken kärra Och ljudet från den motorn med den propellern, otroligt. Den måste ha spöat skiten ur de flesta på sin tid?

This engine is not counter rotating. This engine is a rotory type, not a radial type. It appears to be geared with a planetary gear train such that the engine is rotating faster than the propeller. This means it produces more power strokes per propeller rotation thus making it able to turn a 4-bladed propeller that has a high pitch angle. This arrangement offers more thrust and increased performance as a fighter plane.
@christopheraliphat4534 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. Not sure why he said it was but then the prop and engine clearly rotate in same direction. That was the whole point to be able to counter the gyroscopic effect of the heavy spinning motor.

Very different sound from a Gnome or Clerget when running at normal power. How much throttle control is there? I know with the Gnome you could progressively engage or disengage cylinders: 3, 6 or all 9 for full throttle.

Hur ter sej den jämfört med camel? Verkar ju ha dubbla storleken på propellern så det måste va bra drag.

Amazing wwI biplane, you can feel the power of that engine, it must be awesome to fly if not terrifying. Will they ever come up with an alternative to caster oil, it is so messy but has a high flash point.
@NiclasHorn2 жыл бұрын
sååå om man har dubbla varvtalet i motorn, så förstår jag att man vill ha mer blad på proppen, går man upp i stigning också jämfört med andra motorer osv?

That Siemens-Halske engine is a beast. I am more curious to know how it is STARTED. They rotated the prop to prime and lube the cylinders but nobody swung for the actual start. Is that an added modern feature or is it original?
@wayneantoniazzi27063 жыл бұрын
I'd like to know that myself! I'm guessing mind you, but I wonder if the rotating of the engine pre-flight introduced fuel into the cylinders and then to start a spark was provided by a hand-cranked generator in the cockpit? Just a guess. If a self starter was added for convenience and safety's sake I can understand.

What sort of life can you expect from this engine?
@christopheraliphat4534 Жыл бұрын
Google Siemens-Halske Sh.III . Don’t know if it’s the same motor but there were oiling problems due to war shortages. It literally cut the life of the engine into hours of run time before they blew. If not for that, it would of been far superior to anything in that era.
