"Truly, everything is remarkable and a source of wonder and amazement. Man has the great good fortune to live in this American Garden of Eden." - Albert Bierstadt
The words spoken in this way by German emigrant Albert Bierstadt about his new American home illustrate the overwhelming effect that the pristine expanses of the New World had on him. With his idyllic and idealised landscapes, not always loved by critics, Bierstadt posthumously became one of the pioneers of the conservation movement, showing a broad population the beauty of the still largely undeveloped continent.
