Yes, maybe he just didn't think he knew how to help her. How would it have been if there had been 21st C cameras on the bridge? He would have either mustered up some hero in himself or he would have had to face public humiliation.

I wonder if he did it because of the cameras, wouldn't that too be acting out of self-promotion or some such thing? Interesting point!
