You absolutely hit the nail on the head explaining that. I can never fully get anyone to understand why they don't help me. Even my parents have always been a bit unsure but you summed it up.

Hello! Both my children have albinism. Only on was prescribed glasses but my question here is how do you know or can her ophthalmologist tell me if their Retina is underdeveloped or not??
@annetteferguson19815 жыл бұрын
Hi Janell, an ophthalmologist should be able to look into your children's eyes and see that the retina is very pale. Some diagnose albinism by just looking at the retina. If your children have been diagnosed with albinism, their retina will be affected but it's not really possible to measure how much effect the condition has on their retina. You can only measure how much their vision is affected. I'm not a medial practitioner though, best to ask your ophthalmologist.

I'm sorry after watching this video I can not sit back and let this go unsaid while I am not a ophthalmologist I have been seen by those who are at the top of there respective fields in medical research and while i shouldn't have to say it I will each person with Albinism is different and different things work for different people shoe honing a single statement like "Albinism - Why Glasses Don't Help" further leading an entire community of people to believe it to be true is irresponsible. People with albinism need to see what all works for them and build off of that as a person with albinism I for one can tell you that glasses have helped me greatly as I have been told by doctors that have seen thousands of people with Albinism that I have one of the least developed set of eyes they have seen in someone with Albinism. My journey started at birth born completely blind told by doctors all I would ever see is night and day my parents pushed forward looking for doctors that would put me in corrective lens doctors that would preform surgery on a child. Fast forward 26 years I have had four corrective surgeries wear corrective glasses to get the most out of my vision and after receiving my drivers license something I was told that would never happen did and its because of the time and dedication that my parents took to find doctors that would help me progress. There is nothing wrong with a video like this however the title is miss leading and a bit discouraging to those new members of our ever expanding family watching it. I just want to say have Albinism accepting it is different then being limited by it find what works for you and push forward accepting the limitations of other is something that will only hold you back from being all you can be.

Hi Zackery, thank you for your contribution here. Sadly, not all of us have a Mum like yours. I've known your Mum online for around 15 years and I know she has gone to the ends of the Earth to help you see better, she is an exceptional human. I've interacted with a lot of people with albinism, mostly online, over the past two decades and many, many of them do not benefit from corrective lenses. I do, however, take your point about the name of the video, and I can see now that you've pointed it out that it could be misleading. When I came up with the name, I was thinking of all of us who don't benefit from lenses and the frustration we feel when people say 'oh, just get glasses!'. I was fortunate enough to have a consultation with Brian (Crusty) Evans a few years before he passed away and he just shook his head at my visual acuity, he tried everything and none of it helped. Brian Evans was a man with albinism who was more knowledgeable about the albinism vision impairment than most ophthalmologists and he became an ophthalmologist later in his life. Thanks again for your wise words Zachery.
