Hey everyone! So I'm hearing from different people that the audio was too low, and from others that it was fine. Until I figure out what's going on, I uploaded another version with increased volume. You can find that here - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jIe6Y6Kup9B8a6s And while you're looking at this, which do you find has a better overall level? Trying to get optimal levels across all devices is tricky, so please reply to this comment which you prefer, and what kind of device you're listening with (Laptop speaker, Desktop headphones, desktop speakers, mobile speakers, etc)

Power House thanks for the feedback. Editing audio is by far the worst, as everyone is so subjectively different. It's so hard to come up with a consistent formula to just get it done quick since it seems like every small tweak to fix something for some people, makes it worse for others.

I have an Albion Baron. It's the same weight as the Principe, but with a longer blade and a shorter handle. It's a beast of a cutter, but the blade is very flexible, so it punishes cuts and can be harder to get cutting feedback with.

But since you mentioned that choosing one for aesthetic reasons is valid, ironically enough I actually find that Cold Steel looks a little bit nicer than the Albion swords. I like simple-looking swords but the pommel helps it look just a small bit more pleasing than the Crecy, while I think the Principe is a small bit too fancy-looking for my taste, but I don't know why. That and there's the fecking price of it!

I was just going to say the same thing! Mine arrived paper-cutting sharp out of the box! Great COB, I'm able to heft it one-handed and achieve that sweet wind whistle. My only complaint: the scabbard fit is way too snug. If I put the blade all the way in, it requires a lot of pulling to free it. Other than that, it's the best blade I own for the price! Beats Windlass, CS and DSA.

@@westwass try oiling the sword each time you pull it out for a bit, & it may seep into the scabbard & allow it to slide easier, of course there's the possibility that the scabbard was made in a dryer environment & that it has since absorbed more moisture in your environment causing it to swell & make it tighter fitting, but if its well oiled it should still help to a certain degree.

The principe at 3lb15 oz and an enormously broad blade seems like it's almost singularly optimized for cutting competition, while the cold steel Italian/hand-and-half is a much more generalized design. This just seems like a strange comparison to me: you're emphasizing the difference in budget, when this really looks more an issue of totally different sword designs. Are there really no better budget cutting swords than the cold steel hand-and-half? I can't imagine anyone would buy that sword specifically for cutting competition, while that's probably the target market for the Principe.

I am still a cutting newb, but I can add a bit, having used/owing the Cold Steel Italian Longsword and the Hand-and-a-half Longsword quite a bit. The Italian Longsword has much better handling, and can sometimes feel WAY better than its price point. I agree with the video, the the Hand-and-a-half is great for training, since mistakes and edge alignment are much more apparent with it. I have used the Hand-and-a-half the most for training thus far.

Don't you guys think that custom order will be always superior to line product? I mean I know that Albion is known for its great quality but if someone wants to compete on the highest level and don't want to wait a whole f***ing year for the Pirincipe or Crecy wouldn't it be a good idea to make an custom order for similar sword that would be adjusted to your personal preferences (like the length of the handle). I'm sure that sword ordered from guys like Ensifer, Maciej Kopciuch (Swordmaker), Alan (the Sword's Path) or possible custom order from Albion (although they seem to be insanely expensive) will have if possible even higher quality and it will be better adjusted to you. Sure it can (not necessarily have to) be more expensive but when you want to compete on the highest level you have to be prepared to spend serious money anyway, so custom made sword is probably the way to go. Or maybe I'm absolutely wrong about this... :)

I'm sure a custom sword is better but it's hard to put that in a review don't you think? Individual custom swords will perform differently depending on their individual specifications. You'd have to make sure you know for sure what makes for a good cutting sword or you run the risk of pissing away a load of money on a custom weapon that fails to perform due to your error in the custom specs. I for one, would not trust myself to give the correct custom specs to get an ideal weapon for cutting competitions.

There are very few swordsmiths on the planet who understand medieval swords as much as Peter Johnsson (who does the design work for Albion swords like the Principe and Crecy). The way to think about Albion is generally not "this is a really expensive mass produced sword" but instead "this is a very affordable way to own a sword designed by Peter".

I won't buy another cold steel. Sorry But when the pummel when rolling I just can't bring myself to trust them them especially when the customer support told me that I abused it... I cut water bottles with a man at arms hand and half, yeah it's not their best but I paid $300 for a hunk of metal that fell apart from hitting a water bottle. If they had worked with me a little sure but no they didn't, I looked deeper into the reason the pummel came off it was due the single solo nut used to hold the entire thing together and it's thread's where exceedingly thin and they looked uneven. I told them this in a later call and they said "we have excellent quality control, perhaps it was damaged in shipping.''

comparing apples to pineapples the blade geometry of the swords represented are vastly different. the principe has the best geometry for cutting so price has little to do with it in that aspect.

They literally said they're not comparing the swords directly. They're just comparing the three most common swords in the HEMA community and at cutting tournaments.

Ryan Williamson Yes and No. RJ Mckeehan has made finals with the cold steel several times. Skill will take you much further than a better sword. But it will make a difference between two people of similar skill.

I searched Albion hand and a half sword. And your video didn’t help. You didn’t even have the swords on hand. You didn’t even have the sword to show that you were reviewing… why? How about you have the sword on show the entire time that you’re reviewing?
