The timeless bodylines, unique engine design, motorsports heritage and huge aftermarket support are just a few reasons why the RX7 became so popular. Now add to that the fact we wont be seeing a successor any time soon, or maybe even ever thanks to stricter emissions regulations, the value of RX7s are going to remain high and maybe even keep going higher. Thankfully, 1/64 scale models are still affordable 😜

Even without the rotary heart beating under the hood, the FD RX-7 is by far my favourite 90's car design of all time. A lot of 90's cars went so far into the "bubble" or the "soft and straight" design philosophy, but Mazda perfected it and made it into something curvaceous and voluptuous. Nothing will ever top the timeless design of the FD, not even something as prestigious as the Skyline or the Supra. The sequential twin turbo rotary engine just further sets it apart from the rest of the competition. It's no wonder that people absolutely inflate the shit out of this car's value, because it's a match made in heaven. Thanks for the history lesson!

This is a fantastic summary of the Rotary Engine and Rx-7. Thank you for putting it together. Here are some helpful corrections from a fellow enthusiast. 1) The First Generation of Rx-7 was introduced in 1978 using the code SA. It featured the unique afterburner exhaust and ensuring the Rotary met US emissions.. The FB was introduced in 1981, as the improved "Series 2" and used a now-standard Catalytic Converter. 2) The 1984 GSL-SE was the first to use the 13B-RESI, not 13B-RE which was introduced in the 1990 Cosmo.
@gregpieris44783 жыл бұрын
And FB wasn't ever used in Japan and certain other export markets (eg Australia, NZ and South Africa). In these countries, the first generation was always SA22C. The designation was changed in other markets due to mandating of VINs.

This is probably the best video and most comprehensive overview of the RX-7 I can find on KZbin and deserves about 100 times the views it's getting now. One actual note for the video title and thumbnail: The negativity probably isn't helping with the views. I would say just change it to somewhere along the lines of "The reason RX-7 prices is getting out of hand" or "RX-7 prices need to chill out." Or something that's a bit more light-hearted. The title and video doesn't match up as the video doesn't nearly project as much negativity as I thought it would and I was really hesitant about clicking on this series of video even after KZbin recommended this to me like 20 times in the past. I just thought this is a huge missed opportunity in my honest opinion.

After the 24 hrs of Lemans when mazda engineers disassembled the engine it showed minimal wear, so much so that they could assemble it back, put some oil in it and run another 24 hrs(but the chassis wouldn't have survived another 24 hrs but hey it's one of the toughest and most challenging races in the world)... 787b was a one off wonder

In 1973 both the RX-2 and RX-3 got thermal afterburners for completing the combustion of the unburned exhaust gasses. This is how Mazda got that engine to sound so smooth, quiet and pass emissions. Don't forget Racing Beat in California for their early (and later) successes tuning both the rotary engine and various Mazda chassis for Racing. I don't know who started "bridge porting" but it might have been Racing Beat. They did a lot of tuning on the port shapes. They started working on Rotary engines in 1972. The 13B engine started it's production life in the Rotary Pickup truck in 1974, believe it, or not. It had the same end plates as the 12A, but a wider rotor and perimeter plates. One little secret back then with these normally aspirated rotary engines that I learned early on, is that the lowest octane gasoline works best. That is because low octane fuel burns faster than hi-octane gas and engine knock was never an issue. Our 1973 RX-2 engine suffered from a coolant leak into the combustion chamber. Mazda paid for about half the repair costs to rebuild the engine at the time. This was a common failure at the time. I overheated the engine one more time years later while on vacation. I knew what the failure was and drove continuously all the way home because I knew that once I shut down the engine it would not restart. I added water along the way and made it home. These RX-7 were incredibly popular in club racing because of their reliability. Without valves and lots of moving parts in the engine in it's stock form was a reliable reliable engine and allowed an owner to hit all of the club events in a year without worrying about the engine. Oh one more note. Since I had a RX-2 in the late '70 and early '80's it was a great sleeper car. It looked like a Corolla and went like hell once it got wound up enough and the vacuum secondaries opened up. I (and others') shifted well after the redline warning beeper came on. I've heard of some racers keeping the buzzer on the whole race. Mazda changed the ports for better low end when they came out with the RX-7. In addition to owning and researching everything rotary engine at the time, I also worked at a Mazda Tuner for a short time. This was the era of FB's. The big aftermarket performance upgrade was installing turbos. One more note, we sold some rear seats for these FB's. In Japan the RX-7 was a 2+2 and had rear seats. In the US, we got compartments instead of seats. But these were swappable if anybody wanted the tiny rear seats. I believe we got them from Japan. The FD was the best of the RX-7's. Iconic look and the best of everything. Sorry for the long comment. I knew a lot about Mazda's rotary engines and RX-X cars.

Most comments your going to get are other high schoolers who don't have a job and don't understand how finances in the real world work. So just be realistic and don't expect yourself getting this car as your first or daily driver. They are heavily unreliable and cost a fortune to maintain due to the scarcity of parts. For now just aim for something cheap and simple like a civic or a Camry, when you're earning enough money then maybe get an RX7 as a weekend driver.

I'd advise not to get a fc or fb as a first car because at the end of the day you are buying a two seat sports car from the 70s/80s with a quirky engine that needs patience/time/money to only just keep it on the road. If you are dead set on a rotary get a compression test done and if possible get it on a lift and have a trust worthy mechanic look over EVERYTHING because while these cars are exciting they are 30 year old cars and you can get shafted.
@JoshRex7ven3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, I'm only 17. I'm in my last year of high school, and I decided to buy an FB last year when I knew I was low on cash. I ended up getting a loan from my dad to help pay for it. (You never want to get into loans in high school), however I did later end up paying it off. Was buying the car at 17 and low on cash a good idea? Absolutely not. But you know what? That car has been the absolute best car I have ever owned, and quite frankly has been more reliable than some of the other modern ish cars I've had. I even used it as my daily for a bit. From one high schooler to another, I'd say, wait until you have a stable income to be able to pay for gas (you'll be there alot), insurance and the other things that come along with owning any car. Also, set aside some extra cash on top of that. Once you achieve that, then you can begin looking for an FC or an FB. They are always around. It's always good to have cash on top, because even though I've been lucky, rotaries can be very expensive when the engines break. In the end, I can't tell you what to do, but that is just my opinion. Good luck in your search 👍

If you ask me dawg, is has to be a scam. Dealers are "fake buying" the auctions to set a precedent. [meaning dealer A puts up an auction and dealer B buys it at a stupid price] Then they turn around and say "well this car sold for 100k at an auction so 60k for this one is not bad" when the market price before the auction happened was 18k. You don't know how many times a sleazy salesman have said that shit to me. It's insulting, really. A few examples I remember: with the M2cs, The ford bronco, the nissan Z (400), the mk5 Supra, the new wrangler rubicon v8.

FD RX-7 rotors in an RX8 isn't a good idea. Or did you mean an RX-7 rew engine in a RX8? Renesis rotors are lighter, have thicker/longer side seals and an extra oil control/comp ring. Because RX8 has exhaust ports on the irons, not housings like RX-7 so rotors need to suit. being lighter also means balance is off unless using E-shaft and counterweights to suit your rotors.

Amazing car, but an absolute nightmare to deal with due to its complexity. Even now, I feel like Skyline owners here have an easier time with parts and reliability thanks to the growing number of grey-market owners. It really makes me think about the RX-8, and what kind of fate it will have 25+ years on.. They’re genuinely good cars, but (at the moment) people will give them away because as far as I know, there still hasn’t been a proper solution to the Apex Seals problem. Which currently sits at $1800 FOR REPLACEMENT.

To be fair, the FD that sold for $125,000 aud was a Spirit R which was basically the swan song of the RX-7. However, their prices have indeed skyrocketed, I had an FD shortly after high school in 2006 and it only cost 7 k full disclosure it was a rebuilt title car. I do remember clean title ones going for between 15 and 25 thousand back then same with the Supra, they were between 20 and 35 thousand again depending on condition. It is great that these cars are getting the value they deserve but I fear they’ll just become show pieces instead of being driven which is a shame given how much fun they are to drive.

the values on RX-7s have been increasing in general, you can't get a Spirit R for $125,000 anymore especially in that condition, they'd probably go for closer to 140k+ aud. Spirit Rs and Rzs regularly sell for around 9 million yen at auctions, and one sold for 23,180,000 yen two days ago, although it had 14,000 kms.

it is a repost, he made one a few months ago but removed it, this one seems more detailed but prices haven't been updated, 125k aud for a spirit R is a good deal now, they go for far more than that. Highest price that I've seen is 23,180,000 yen ~ 200k USD for a grade 5 spirit R with 14,000km which sold 2 days ago at auctions in Japan.

here in colombia i bought the only rx7fd from 1993 that existed for 43,000 american dollars, and that remains to buy interior and exterior things to improve its appearance, not to mention that here there is only one mechanic in the country who knows about rotaries

Low mileage jdm cars sale for a premium, that isn’t always the case for high mileage ones. This is why mileage means nothing to me because I ended up upgrading everything anyway, whether it’s oem parts or high performance aftermarket.

I've owned my FD RX7 since 2006, this is my second one. It's now a 20b, 973hp monster. I had thought about selling it, but I've put so much work into it, I can't.

Were looking at building a 20 for my rx8. My 7 is pretty well stock. Would love your input especially if your building that much power. Thats unheard of.

@@brettfrancis1527 sure where are you located? You can DM me on IG. I've helped alot of people out with tuning, parts sourcing, fitment, and installation. You name it, I've probably done it. I've also got an RB30 Skyline R33 GTR. I've helped people with RB's and Skyline as well.

The car is still affordable where I live thankfully because it's my favourite car ever and I plan to own one within 5-10 years. They are literally cheaper than the average new car price in this country by 7k

Right before the fast and furious came out I was trying to buy one in 2001-2002 , I test drove a few 93s in Alabama and the nice ones were like 15k and a decent one (running ) was 8-12k

Actual topic starts at 21:45! And no, he does not back up the claim made at the start that the german origin of the engine has anything to do with the price increase!

This was my Fav car of all time but after owning an FC and dealing with so many issues, including gas guzzling like a V8, loss of compression, over heating, and having to rebuild it over and over, I said F*it and got an MR2 Spyder. This thing is economic, has an indestructible engine, is super light weight and looks cool. Oh and doesn't cost 100K. Yea not going back and with a turbo kit and a built engine I'm sure I could beat any RX7 at the track anyways.
