Album Art: The Heavy Aesthetic ON THE RECORD | Metal Injection

It's so true, even now album art is very important. Because on youtube or itunes for example, the first thing you notice before the music is the album art or thumbnail on a video.

True, The band that got me into heavy music was GNR and they really attracted me because of the art of their Appetite For Destruction album. The cross with the skulls got my attention immediately.

Mercyful Fate's Don't Break the Oath has the greatest album cover of all of metal. I'm only 18 now but I can imagine myself being a teenager and seeing that album cover in a record store in the mid 80s. I would for sure run to my mum and stay away from that record store for weeks.

Paul Romano's work for Mastodon is some of the best out there, encompasses every feeling you can associate with the music. Even the covers they've used after he left are amazing pieces.

I love that bands like mastodon and tool are leading the charge on beautiful album art. Those albums designed by Paul Romano are just fantastic and legendary now. Tool of course is just as visual as they are sonic with their stuff so it’s kind a no-brainer that they’ll have amazing album art and elaborate packaging.

Dan Seagrave - Morbid Angel Gateways to Annihilation is an amazing cover. The cover isnt even the full portrait. If you google it you'll see the whole image and its fucking amazing. I love album art!

I bought Grimm Reaper rock you to hell because of the album work. Iron Maiden had the best album art ever. My friend had every Maiden poster before he ever heard them. Because he was an artist & loved the artwork. I wanna start getting some classic Metal vinyl. The cd is not the same. Of course Megadeth as well.

It sure can't be said about every artwork at that time, but the reason for some of those from the early days of Photoshop ™ loonking bad nowadays is the fact that it was a new technology, the artists were still figuring it out, there wasn't much of a frame of reference. Considering this, of course some of them come up as silly for us now. It felt a bit unfair to me that the Dave McKean one was juxtaposed with the narration saying the artwork of this period dropped in quality and all XD

+Diogolindir The band's name is rivers of nihil album cover art done by death god Dan Seagrave you have seen a lot of his art trust me. Would not have kept rivers of nihil folder not melodic enough but after seeing the cover art i became a fan.

Biggest first world problem that irks me with music is, I buy a record and when I put in on my computer to put it on my iPod or whatever and they don’t have the album art, and you try to google it to find it to apply it to the files and quite often you can only find a few tiny shit 200x200 pictures, I just wanna see what I’m listening to is that so wrong

It's not just the artwork, it's the 5 to 10 subliminal sexual images that attracts you to the albums. Tiny "p's and v"s" all over the covers. You can find them with inspection. I worked at a record store in the 80's and on any album cover I'd show customers.
