I really loved your review! I was also born in 1990 and as a long time fan of Mariah, even I was very impressed with that album. 28 years in the game and her catalog is still immaculate! There is absolutely no one in this current industry that has her longetivity and her ability to come out with incredible beats, insane vocal acrobatics and impeccable pengame. How does she do it? I don't know. She's just unmatched and in a league of her own.

this was 100% hip hop and r&b, the final track Portrait was included because that's her thing, since the late 90's her albums consist of mostly really good r&b tracks with the last track always being a powerful ballad. If you wanna react to more of her I'd recommend both butterfly and the emancipation of mimi, her 2 best albums IMO.

Mariah Carey is one of the greatest Soul/RnB/Hip-Hop singer/songwitrter of any generation. She did grew up in New York and was raised by an opera singer mother who nurtured her talents both as a vocalist and as a songwriter. She, however, just loves in general and does not limit herself to RnB/Hip-Hop having worked with from Pavarotti and her own mother in opera, Tony Bennet in Jazz/Blues to Bone Thugs in Hip-Hop, to working with rock bands like Journey and Def Leppard. One thing that sets Mariah Carey apart from other singers is how she incorporates the perfectionism of classical music, spirit of soul music and the edginess and angst of Rock and Hip-Hop.

1997s Butterfly was her first truly “urban” R&B album, a lot of critics have credited it for being a pioneering album of crossover R&B/Pop/Hip-Hop. I think you’ll also like 2005s The Emancipation Of Mimi too. I’m sure you’ll recognise the hits It’s Like That and We Belong Together from that one! It’s also one of her most upbeat albums.

You're absolutely right, Mariah LOVES hip-hop and it really shines through in pretty much all of her albums from the daydream album onwards. Heck, we even get a glimpse of it in her debut album when she "rapped" in her song "prisoner". Mariah's cadence is actually very hiphop/rap and it's super prominent in the "butterfly", "rainbow", "charmbracelet", and "the emancipation of mimi" albums.

Mariah Carey is the originator of the pop and hip hop crossover. Before her pop wanted NOTHING to do with hip hop. But when Mariah released the Fantasy remix featuring ODB (old dirty bastard) Mariah Carey actually had to fight her label because they didn't want her to do it because they thought it would hinder her career but she did it and that's why in the hip hop and pop community that moment is so ICONIC. After that Mariah collabed with TONS of hip hop artist to Bone Thugs and Harmony and Jay Z to the Bad Boys to Nicki Minaj to Gucci Mane.

It's always nice to hear a review or opinion from someone who has only casually listened to Mariah growing up. As fans, we are biased and will always tend to love what she gives us. But from someone like you who is a fan of hip-hop but isn't particularly a Mariah fan (aka Lamb), especially for you to say you enjoyed it somehow means much more. Hope you get to review more Mariah albums in the future. She does co-write and co-produce about 95% of her material, so that's something you should know as it does set her apart from Whitney and Celine. And if you were impressed with her singing here, then nothing's gonna prepare you for the slayage that will ensue when you listen to her albums from 1990-2005 when her voice was in better condition. But honestly, the most impressive thing about this album is that it arrived 28 years into her career. She's pushing 50 and is still capable of delivering quality music when most singers of her age would just retire. Legendary indeed.

I just graduated from grad school and got my Masters in Music. As part of my requirements I had to publish a thesis work on a musical work. I chose Mariah’s album Butterfly since it is considered her magnus opus, I compared and contrasted all her previous albums to Butterfly and how they differed and show a less urban side of her. If you liked Caution you will definitely like Butterfly (1997) (including the remixes), The Emancipation Of Mimi(2005) and maybe every Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2010) as they are all very R&B/ hip hop influenced.

This is one of the best R&B albums that has been released in a long time. It has it's own sound and vibe, which makes you want to repeat. BTW, this is classic Mariah. Dropping beats and having amazing collaborations. Her reference in "With You" : "I've been loving you so long, ever since that Bone Thugs song" is related to "Breakdown" off her Butterfly album.
