1. Twin Cinema- The New Pornographers (If indie flavored power pop is your thing, you can't go wrong with this high energy record. New Wave fans would probably dig this album too. I always describe their sound as an energetic mix of early new wave and power pop.- Guaranteed to put you in an upbeat mood) ) 2. Come on Feel the Illinoise- Sufjan Stevens (Such an amazing sounding album with great stories!) 3. Chaos and Creation in the Backyard- Paul McCartney ( This is a really unique album for him that I fear has been overlooked by a lot of people. It's really intimate and introspective. Nigel Godrich managed to get Paul to really push himself and deliver something amazing. If you like that kind of mellow, heart on the sleeve songwriting, you need to check this out) 4. Clap Your Hand, Say Yeah!- S/T (Such a remarkable debut, which unfortunately, they have yet to better.) 5. Picaresque- The Decemberists (the album that introduced me to The Decemberists. Some amazing indie pop and folk tunes on this record- The Sporting Life and 16 Military Wives would be top 10 singles in a perfect world. My favorite is still the Mariners Revenge Song though. They were doing epic sea shanties before they were trendy!) Runners up: The Woods- Sleater-Kinney, Alligator- The National, Gimme Fiction- Spoon Yeah. There were a lot of artists and albums I enjoyed from 2005, but the only ones with staying power, that I go back to are listed above.

@@TastesLikeMusic I would rank X&Y as a 3.5 star album; i.e. a very good one. Most albums of that quality aren't likely to get into my listening rotation unless I'm really motivated to give them another shot. That was an album that I listened to a fair amount back in the day, so it's pretty unlikely to get a re-evaluation unless I really catch a Coldplay bug. I agree with Jason's comment above that "things fall off a cliff" after Viva la Vida, but I do really enjoy the song "Paradise" as a rather cheesy but catchy-as-hell and uplifting single.

Heh-heh. I'm on team Joe in the sense that I think there were some good albums this year, but was there anything that stands up to the greatest albums of the '60s and '70s (or even '80s, for that matter)? I'd say no. Joe seems to recognize that. And that's not a knock on the other guys, heck, everybody loves the music they grew up with. I myself am guilty of rating certain albums 5 stars that, in the grand scheme of things, probably didn't deserve to be 5 stars... they're just my pet albums.

A Status Quo album on Listography? One day they will ban me, but if a band entertains rock audiences around the globe for 40 years they may do something right. Like playing those three chords in the right order, for example. Or invest 2:17 to check out Yellow Cotton Dress (or 3:17 for Airborne) to get convinced that the Wussy debut is worth listening to. And crazy - Sleater-Kinney have 4 albums that I give 5 stars, one with 4,5 and three with 4 stars, so they seem to be one of my most favourite bands over all. But not in 2005. I must be a weird person... HM - Jello Biafra & Melvins - Sieg Howdy, Solomon Burke - Make Do With What You Got, Son Volt - Okemah and the Melody of Riot, Linda Gail Lewis - Me and the Boys in the Band, Status Quo - The Party Ain't Over Yet 5. Amy Rigby - Little Fugitive (The singer/songwriter was born in the same year as me. She made her first record at 37 and while her biography is surely quite different from mine her songs cover ground that I can easily relate to. She is a great songwriter and a great singer and her choice of musical style for each song always fits the topic.) 4. Van der Graaf Generator - Present (The most unexpected reunion in a long time. The progressive band had disbanded in 1977 - this line-up even did their last recordings in 76. It is even more impressive that a band with such complex and challenging repertoire record "live in the studio" after a nearly 30 year hiatus. The chemistry between the four is immediately there. To be clear - VDGG were a unique band in their heyday and stood apart from the progressive bands of the 70s the same way King Crimson did. This is a welcome return for all old fans but not a point to start for new listeners. It is not up to their best work but it is unmistakable VDGG. Note: there is a second CD with instrumental improvisations, this is more of a bonus documentation for those interested in how such music is created, I did not consider it here.) 3. Phil Manzanera - 50 Minutes Later (Magnificent melodies and exotic rhythms embellish his journey back into his early years in London - including the legendary UFO club and its psychedelic settings. The choice of collaborators speaks for itself, all his old companions are on board Eno, Robert Wyatt, Paul Thompson, Andy Mackay. Despite the concept and participants the album has no nostalgia to it. Instead there is a bunch of great melodies set in a variety of influences from Latin motifs and psychedelia to progressive rock or mainstream rock, still all parts create a larger whole. Progressive rock is not dead when it actually progresses instead of trying to recreate a 70s sound of old. Strangely enough, those who understand this best are those who created the sound back then.) 2. Grace Potter and the Nocturnals - Nothing But Water (What the world needed in 2005 was a great hammond organ player to fill the void left by Gregg Allman and Steve Winwood. So how about a woman with a voice like Bonnie Raitt or Bonnie Bramlett and magic in her fingers? This is the band's debut although Grace had published a first album under her own name in 2004. There is a bit more of gospel influence than the Allman Brothers Band usually had but otherwise the style is comparable. Important to notice that despite Potter's talent this is a band and a very tight unit.) 1. Wussy - Funeral Dress (Everything in this band seems to contradict itself and on paper none of the elements could ever make a whole. In reality and by some magic it works. Chuck Weaver of the Ass Ponys had vanished from the public almost a decade ago and Lisa Walker came from nowhere. They were a pair and even if she was about half his age at the time of this record she appeared to be more mature while he in his mid-forties still was like the frightened teenager. Their vocal interplay as well as their guitars had me hooked immediately. There are 11 tracks, none above four minutes and each is a story masterfully told. This is one of the rare albums that has not a note too much or a note missing.)

@@frangarcia7774To be honest, I find the production on this album horrible. There is an extra layer of clutter and vocals put over each track to make it sound more "modern" that does nothing for the songs. Sometimes you get glimpses of what may have been the original idea but then they bury it. I am not sure what the idea was, maybe trying to sound like Yo La Tengo? Guys - my advice is to ignore the ridiculous nitpicking of some of the comments. For example, I always say, "for me," and I'm an English teacher. It just sounds better. I used to say, "X and I" when referring to what "me" and someone else was doing, but I changed to "X and me" years ago because ... it sounds better. Can't believe I'm talking about grammar, instead of how much I love Joe for referencing Mesmerize by SoaD (a band I truly love - I don't care if people label them nu-metal). See? What's worse? Saying "Joe and me" both like Mesmerize, or the fact that I've said I love SoaD? 😜
@prockrog52193 жыл бұрын
An observation after going through many of the comments/other lists. Things are becoming more fragmented as we now enter into a territory with few if any "classic" albums. So people really just pick their favorites, and many are less influenced by the Gospel of Rock which is a good thing. So many great, but forgotten, albums in the past that has been overshadowed by the classics. Yes, they are classics for a reason, but it's very hard to listen to the music of the past unbiased.
@NaughtyVampireGod3 жыл бұрын
True about more variety in picks; but why do you think people here are (or were) influenced by Gospel of Rock? I know what you mean - but I don't think there's much evidence of that here. I honestly think this audience just goes with their straight-up favorites. But interesting point . . Less universally recognized classic albums after 2000?
@roxannewalsh3 жыл бұрын
This is where Joe was completely wrong in the video. The 70s were just as broad but there are many bands or albums that may have never reached the time when he started listening. I probably could list as many great albums for each year in the 70s or 80s than for the 2000s but chances are thin that many will know them. Much of it has never been released on CD, many albums have appeared as part of "2 LPs on 1 CD" or are collector's items. With the enormous amount of new releases you cannot keep even track of those, so I cannot blame anyone for not being able to catch up with 30 years before. So most of the time, people will only know those "classic" albums that appear in all the lists.

That may be true. There may be tons of 70s and 80s albums that are excellent that no one remembers. I suppose it’s as likely that the availability of modern albums and the proliferation of blogs and journals covering the albums makes it seem like there’s more now. Maybe. - Joe

@@TastesLikeMusic A good explanation. The scene was already diverging in those days, so there are many albums that e.g. Folk-Rock fans may know about, but if that genre is not interesting for you then you may just know a handful of key names. And if we dig as deep as a top 5 or top 10, of course always those names will appear - unlikely that anyone would name such great bands as Fotheringay or Renaissance unless you get to some expert discussions.

@@NaughtyVampireGod I think there are several reasons for albums being less influential in the 2000s - most having to do with The Internet. The decline of print media and the fragmented entertainment market that now consists of an infinite number of sources for video, games, music and opinions of those. 15 minutes of fame has now become 15 seconds of fame. Record labels have less marketing power, and T-shirts are more important than albums. Albums don't bring streaming revenue - mega hit singles does. And the whole concept of rock superstardom has changed. I'm not sure there will be another Bruce Springsteen, Elton John or David Bowie, just as nobody has managed to top the popularity of Elvis in the 50s and The Beatles in the 60s. Evolution and fragmentation leads to niches.

My Top 5 5. Rapture of the Deep - Deep Purple A forgotten album by the band that actually is being remixed just about now. There are interesting songs on it but the current sound/production isn't that exciting at all and by this point you had heard Steve Morses Deep Purple quite a bit. The remix might be something! 4. In Your Honor - Foo Fighters I do like that they tried to go outside their box. Not a perfect result but pretty good. 3. One Way Ticket to Hell ..and Back - The Darkness Probably the album of theirs that have aged the worst talking "sound" but still a fun listen all the way through. 2. Out of Exile - Audioslave A bit odd mix of them trying to be more commerical and less commerical at the same time. I like it quite a bit but I think both casual fans of Soundgarden/RATM and diehard-fans was a bit confused. 1. Lullabies to Paralyze - Queens of the Stone Age Standing in the shadow of "Songs for the Deaf" and it's biggest weakness is that it is all over the place. The hits are there and the the more odd songs are there but not sure about the order of things and it might be too long. Cut out maybe one or two songs and 20 seconds here and there and this would be a really nice record. I would rate all of these between 3 and 3.8 out of 5. The thing for me was that I was starting to explore more old music so the interest for current music at the time wasn't as good as it could have been. Have a nice weekend!
