I don't think they left West behind. You said it yourself "in their haste they dropped a paddle, life jacket, and raft, on the roof". It's wests own fault he gave up so easily and never thought they would leave him the means to escape. They didn't drop that by accident. They left that for West in case he made it. But he never even took a minute to think about it or look.

I don't think it's the greatest escape. The amount of resources given to those inmates is kind of crazy. They made it. The whole thing about them putting their raft in at 11 oclock being "too early" is the biggest load of horse crap. They're saying that 11 : 30 would be fine, but any earlier or later and the tide would have taken them back to the island. Well, they weren't taken back to the island. It says they wouldn't have survived, but what they mean is that they wouldn't have been able to make any forward progress, and would subsequently be pushed back to the island, which we know didn't happen. They likely struggled w/ paddling for a half hour, then started making progress when the tide shifted. It would have been an hour long ordeal anyway. A half hour? They would be in that raft for at least that long either way

Yeah, it's speculated that the escape failed because 30 or 40 years later there was no evidence of the ecapees being alive. You can't just fade into the background with no resources unless you completely change your living style to be primitive. That's why when people escape, robberies are a common go to crime because they need money to get resources to survive. So unless you're telling me all 3 of them went into primitive, wilderness experts, they had to have committed crimes soon after they escaped. Either that or they moved to another country

Yeah, if the Mythbusters - who aren't even crazy fit guys or anything - could make it, then 3 prisoners who were desperate and determined to escape, and were probably flooded with adrenaline given the intense situation, absolutely could as well. The fact that people in the decades since have regularly made this so-called impossible, death-sentence swim is proof enough to me. And that's even assuming they didn't have someone on the outside waiting with a boat! Like, I'm really supposed to believe these men who planned their escape so thoroughly for over a year had NO real plan on how to handle getting to shore? That they were unprepared? Sorry, I just don't. I definitely think they made it and the FBI didn't want to admit it, because it was embarrassing that 3 men could escape from a prison the government spent so much money on and claimed was inescapable. Plus while the prison was still open they probably didn't want anyone else thinking they could raft or swim to shore.

The implication that the guards did not know Morris was an escape risk is absurd! The reason Morris was on Alcatraz was because he was an extreme escape risk. Morris's biggest challenge would be staying out of prison, once he escaped. When you look at the rates of recidivism, it would be difficult for one person not to return to prison, three is practically impossible.Armed robbery and burglary was Morris's profession. The Anglin brothers may have been capable of doing something other than commit armed robberies, but that would have taken time and resources that they did not have access to after they escaped. When those men escaped, they had no money, no transportation and wet clothes, all of those things make it very difficult to get far away from a prison you just escaped from. As time passes, details get forgotten, changed and invented. I look at all of them with a grain of salt. I've heard many different versions concerning "scientific data" and the plausibility concerning that event, and most of it seems intentionally ambiguous depending on which side of the story benefits the person or group presenting the data. As far as the eye witnesses are concerned, I put them into the same category as people that have seen a ghost, or Bigfoot. The biggest aspect of belief in anything, is wanting what you believe to be true.

@@MM-lg4ni Yes, I see your point. I have edited my comment accordingly. I do not know what "stream of consciousness method" I was using, but my point seemed to get lost in the tall weeds. Here I am trying to look smart while talking about IQ, and now I feel foolish. I should have proofread my statement before I commented, thanks for enlightening me. The type of test that is given to prisoners has a low ceiling so it caps out at 130, I don't know where he got the 133 number from. The tests that are given are similar to the ones they give in the military, so they are standardized to the point where taking them multiple times could increase your score to a noticeable (not significant) degree. My roundabout point is that this event (not unlike many) has become more myth than fact. I do not understand why people wish for the outcome of this event to be different than the evidence would suggest.These are not the guys people should be rooting for, they were armed robbers and thieves and there is a reason they were in prison, and on Alcatraz! These three men were also not getting any younger, and if you would have run into them on this night, there is a good chance that they would have done anything they had to do to get away. Another 20 or 30 years added to any one of these men's sentences, would have been devastating. And they all knew that, that's what makes them dangerous! I did not mean to imply that they were not smart or clever, but I think that they are all given much more credit than they deserve. They were all hardened criminals, and people should keep that in perspective. I will take your comment to heart and not delve into areas in which I am neither educated in, or at least have the insight to comment on appropriately! Cheers!

@@MM-lg4ni Absolutely friend! I appreciate intelligent interactions in these forums and look forward to anyone that reminds me that I am not as smart as I think I am! My Dad used to tell me, "The dumbest person in the room, is the one that assumes they are the smartest person in the room." I need to be reminded of that, because frankly, You Tube is not the place to expect intellectually stimulating interactions! Any subject matter that would lean in that direction is a bit to academic for my taste, so I feel it's necessary to step foot in the arena where emotion tends to be the predominate asset over intelligence. I need to have my head handed to me every once in a while to remind me of the bar I am setting in expecting insightful discourse. You're doing me a favor by knocking me down a bit, I'm to self centered to be introspective. And your English is quite good, if it is a second language. Much better than those who employ it's use as their mother tongue! Thank you again for reminding me not to talk it, when I can't walk it!

Grew up fascinated with this topic. We used to go on field trips to Alcatraz in grade school. I don’t know if they made it, but I do know this, it’s not as hard as it’s always been made out to be. I have been swimming, surfing, and playing in the Pacific Ocean of Central and Northern California for over 40 years and I’ve never understood this idea that that swim was some sort of automatic death sentence. It be uncomfortable and it would be dangerous. Hell, I’d admit at the wrong time and tide your odds are in death’s favor, but for someone young enough, in fairly good shape, and determined to succeed the odds are in their favor. People act like it was a done deal and the DoC folks would just assume you believe their prisons are impossible to escape from. Would they go as far as letting a couple get away if the public and prisoners think them dead? That’s hardto believe, but then again, nobody ever talks about the guys who were never seen again after an Alcatraz break in the 30s
@markzepp481
@markzepp481 7 ай бұрын
You’re exactly right as someone who’s been surfing for well over a decade now yes that swim would be difficult but nowhere near impossible and it can be done especially if you’re desperate enough I never understood why they always just labeled it an automatic death sentence people have survived way worse

@@markzepp481 I agree with both of you guys. Determination and desperation usually aren't looked at as factors for some reason. Sometimes the easiest way to get a man to complete a grand and arduous undertaking is to try and convince him that his journey would be impossible.

That wasnt an attempt man, they made it out of the prison. That escape was a success. Whether they made it to the shore is like 95% likely.

Excellent presentation. As for the authorities' dismissal of the inmates being able to make the swim; you do NOT need an "athletic" build to distance swim, just technique. Someone with the brothers' level of experience could expend very little energy in the water. I call it "treading water in a direction" and my out of shape, half century old self regularly crosses the TN river and back with NO floatation during swims that average three hours. They had floatation and acess to wool garments (retain warmth even when soaked), were comparably young, and prison inmates in those days were active and used to a rough life. The brothers were known to swim around ICE in fresh water far less bouyant than the Bay; they could have done it.

I'm a captain and have been to Alcatraz and your video is great. they made it to a shore without of a doubt in my opinion. whether by being picked up or with their own vessel it would not be as challenging as everyone seems to think. That bay can be rough based on weather and current but with any type of floatation device you could make it to a shore. I feel they left the life raft, jacket, and paddle on the roof for west or he made it out with them and he chickened out so they agreed to go in one raft. The actual interesting part to me is that they had enough freedom on The Rock to be able to build dumby heads paddles rafts life jackets which required an estimated 50 rain coats. Also the fact that they where able to dig through the walls it seems to me that the guards did beyond less then the minimum of their duties. Alcatraz was more or less a political stunt to show citizens that they where cracking down on crime in a dramatic and harsh way during a time of intense criminal activity. If you have been there you realize the truth that it is not as grand as its portrayed and the capacity vs the cost must have been laughable.

This is great. Interesting one that I have never yet heard anyone talk about…. I have read as many books as I can get my hands on about Alcatraz, prisoner and guard stories etc. And only once, in Robert shrouds book I think it was, he talks about the escape and the fact they did not use spoons to scratch through the brick work or the cell. He says that at the time work was being done on the cell block roof inside the building. It was very dusty hot and horrible work that some of the prisoners were working on. With sheeting to hold the dust back. They cashed some drills out of fan motors that they used to drill out the brick work from the back of the cells and just scrapped the last small amount with spoons from inside their cells. He goes on to say that it was so dusty and horrible that the guards, unbelievably, didn’t go behind the sheeting very often to check on the prisoners working. Whilst I have only found this one snippet of information, it sounds much more realistic to me. And too embarrassing for the authorities to admit to. And along with the other omissions like the, we never found a raft. I think this has more merit and truth behind it.
