As much as I love new gear, I think the two most important things for bass playing are these: Pratice and playing a bass that you feel comfortable playing. This is a fantastic showcase of how different basses all sound great in the hands of a great player playing great bass lines. As always, love your content, AMP!

So glad that you just used the AI to rip the bass from the song instead of “hey computer make McCartney play a Dingwall”. Great playing too! I think I would’ve liked a direct A/B of the original tone too, but this was still great video. Thanks!!

This is an intriguing experiment, but it kinda shows that it's not really the bass but the the player and especially the production. Yes certain basses have a certain timbral quality, but it's all in how you play it and mix it.

Hearing Geddy's part played on a P pickup wasn't too far off from his mid '80s sound with his Wal and Steinbergers.
@alexfairhurst3592 ай бұрын
IIRC on Moving Pictures Geddy was pretty much only using the neck pickup on his Jazz bass, so you accidentally made yourself sound closer to the original there lol. That aside, this is a fantastic idea for a series and I really hope you make more! I for one would love to hear Nirvana's In Bloom played on something like a P bass with flats and finger style

@basstrom882 ай бұрын
To be honest, the "dark sounding bass tone where a bright bass normally would be" examples just sounded as if you were hearing the bass track through a few walls or from outside a car. I think the choice of neutral/treble-cut EQ mixes also made the basses sound less out of place. For example, if you played the Stingray with stereotypical cranked-treble "zing" tone like Flea, then Ain't No Mountain High enough would sound quite a bit different. I think many types of basses can sound similar-ish in a mix if they are EQ'd correctly and played conservatively. It's when they're played at the extremities of their unique configurations that they stand out (mid-cranked bridge pickup on a jazz, treble-cranked MM pickup on a stingray, treble-cut neck pickup on a Rick, etc)
@ampthebassplayer2 ай бұрын
Correct. My whole point in doing this is to show people that acquiring more basses to get the “right” sound isn’t always necessary. What’s more, is I didn’t even do anything with the basses controls for these recordings. Everything was set to full up on the passive basses, and the active basses were neutral. I even used the same amp sim preset. With a bit more consideration for the song being played, you could push any of these basses to sound much better than they did for their given contexts. Basically I’m trying to get people to put their focus back on playing and understanding the gear they have rather than feeling like they need to buy more stuff. Call me a de-influencer.

I honestly would have bought a Thunderbird years ago, when I first started playing, had I known how easy and fun they are to play. No it does not have the "traditional sounds" one associates with Fender, or just Bass in general. But at the same time, the dynamics you can get out of it, can really change the energy of your songs / material performed. It's an incredibly responsive Bass, and the more you attack it, the better it gets. It just produces sounds no other Bass really does (I have an Explorer that comes close, but it's such a monster that most of what comes out of it is bottom.) I found playing Funk on it relatively easy, and it had a decent sound for it. Not as poppy as a Fender or Musicman, but a bit more spanky. Please refer to music slang dictionary for what this all means ;) And a lot easier to play on it than a Rickenbacker. Which to this day was the most major disappointment playing a Bass I've ever experienced. And Chris Squire was The Man. So it was hugely majorly disappointing to finally play one, and not like a single thing about it. I STILL WANT ONE THOUGH!!!

The right bass for the right application (and a player with skills appropriate for the task.) Ain't No Mountain High, the StingRay walked on the vocals. The P-'Stang on Tom Sawyer was lacking the punch dynamics. Can't Stop, we regret it too! Missing the snap and pop it needs. I Saw Her Standing There isn't too bad. It has the low thumpiness, but lacks the woody resonance. (this is also the only one I've even come close to playing decently!🙄) Dean Town, the lack of the Burpiness it looses the fun character of the piece.

My answer to all of this. None of it sounds… not right…. But to the trained ear those subtle differences that are characteristic to each bass I feel really show the brilliance in each players original bass choice. On the other hand this proves and shows that you can potentially play something on any bass and you can try that to open your creative possibilities. Even the thunderbird playing slap has this vintage quality that just makes it feel different but it’s a different sonic scape to mess with bass floating around in

What's funny is that I didn't change my recording settings at all. Everything was the same amp sim that I use for practice, and I didn't really leverage the onboard controls outside of being in active mode for the Beatles song. I feel like the bass makes a bigger difference to the sound, but I'm open to being proven wrong!

Tone isn't a good or bad, right or wrong, just find something or some that work for you fits your expression or tone preferences and edit them just so slightly per son to make them suit the setting, personally i play a jazzbass w flats, foam, flats, scooped tone, favouring the neck p up but only having 50-70% volume and that works amazing with tons of things both things that have a warm tone and ones that have nasally or growly ones BUT i do also experience that it can hold me back so slightly in some contexts so i skip out on the foam or add some bridge pickup, tone or other things in another thing can be changing playing position or such aswell
