Thank you gunny. We have had some fun times making these. Just back from LA. Went for a memorial for a close friend but managed to get in screwing around at LA live steamers. Charley Chaplin’s studio, the toy district, travel town, two world class car collections, met the owner of Carnie’s hot dog stand, now worth 50 million and still cooking hot dogs all day long, and saw a film at Graumans Chinese theater.

Great period in locomotive development. Diesel electric locomotives became the normal but for a time they did not have the power needed to replace steam. But this locomotive proved that multiple unit lashing was workable. And that’s what killed the steam locomotive
@nathancorcoran53475 жыл бұрын
There were four of these kinds steam turbine locomotives from railroads. They had first started in the 1930's. Here they are. There's this one, from the Union Pacific that you are showing. And the three others are, Pennsylvania Railroad S2 # 6200, Chesapeake & Ohio M-1 locomotives, and the Norfolk & Western "John Henry". All of these steam turbine locomotives were scrap. But they are still in the history of railroads that they worked on.
@ToyManTelevision5 жыл бұрын
They must have been something to see. Especially the John Henery. Oh and the m-1. And the S-2. Heck all of em.

I meant to say Jawn Henry. But still a pretty good engine. Just like the rest of the steam turbine locomotives.

Really something to see. I really wonder what it sounds like. Want to put sound in it but who knows. Not like a diesel. Not like a gas turbine. Perhaps a bit but with no combustion in the turbine... and not like a steam locomotive. Sort of an electric sounding with a hint of turbo whine.

One of the neat things about UP is that for a significant portion of it's history they was not afraid to experiment and develop new locomotives and technologies in-house even though a number of those ended up being a bit of a disaster.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
The glory days of UP transition. Besides running some amazing steam locomotives, but in trying to come up with replacements for them they helped EMD and General Electric and Alco research some great new ideas. This “failed” locomotive was one of the first locomotives able to be MUd. (Multi units running from one control). And this was the first locomotive to have dynamic brakes!! So failure? No way. Did it work as planned? Nope. That’s progress.

@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Not sure. All about the same time. But UP built 2 and they were always lashed together. One thing UP was most interested in was running 2 locomotives from one. Today we don’t even think about that. But the idea of a bunch of smaller diesel locomotives replacing one big steam locomotive was attractive if they could be run by one crew.
@amtraklover6 жыл бұрын
You are correct. The C&O N1s came about during the mid 1940s lasting until 1950. The N&W Jawn Henry was around the mid 1950s

Hey, bit of a long shot. I'm a budding 3D model maker don't have much spare cash. I model Locomotives and rolling stock for games and I've set my sights on modelling a Climax class B locomotive the problem I've got is I can't find any frame plans/Blueprints of the locomotive to do my model off. So wondering has anyone got a scanned image of said plans. Mostly model NG 2ft or 3ft gauge. Be willing to show images if people are interested? Regard Matt

There was a series of books on the models of Kosovo Hiraoka. He modeled all of these in about 1/12 scale. Live steam. The books have his complete plans. Just what your looking for if you can find the books online. I have the Hysler book. Amazing detail.

@lescobrandon30476 жыл бұрын
Jason Carpp - It was people who loved steam at UP looking for an alternative to the Diesel-Electrics. Personally, i am not a fan of locomotives that sound and look like buses with that nasty odor.
@jasoncarpp77426 жыл бұрын
I'm not a fan of today's buses. I'm rather old-school when it comes to buses and trains.
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Really a one of a kind. One of the first non electric locomotives to be able to run multiple locomotives from one of the locomotives. Without this feature diesel locomotives would have never worked. You can’t really build a diesel with the power and pulling power of a steam locomotive. It takes a string of diesels to pull a train. Also this was the first locomotive with dynamic brakes. Also needed before diesel locomotives would work. For some time many thought gas turbine would be the only replacement for steam. And it worked great! But when the fuel became expensive that killed that. So mu diesel took over. But this steam locomotive was the test platform for that.
@DarrelCarson6 жыл бұрын
Wow, great model! Looks to me like a locomotive of those proportions would have trouble navigating turns. Does it articulate in any way?
@ToyManTelevision6 жыл бұрын
Sure does! 4 sets of drivers. 20 drivers! All aspects of these 2 locomotives worked great except the steam condensers. And that made it not work. But in every other way a huge success.
